I don't know much about Mausers but AIM has them for a good price ( I think)

Your best bet is to get one of the recently returned Russian capture K98ks. They will run you about $180-300. A miss-matched non-import marked one will now run 400-600 or so. A matching, vet bringback will go $700-2,000. The Russian captures are available from early production years(the 1930s). You can contact an importer(Interordnance), a big distributor(Lew Horton, AIM, Southern Ohio Gun etc) or a boutique dealer who handpicks the rifle such as Allan Schisel(sp?) or Empire Arms. The number one factor, in my opinion, is the condition of the bore.
If you don't want to piss around, than contact Empire Arms or Allan Schisel and have them hand select one for you.
Good luck from an Iowa neighbor!

Check the Empire Arms Website. They often have WWII Mauser 98K's. My brother got a Russian Captured 98K a couple years ago from that site.

Other than that...GUNBROKER.

X2 what Jeffe and Gene wrote. Hollis has one of those Russian capture K.98s, and it is nice.
Also, the Czech Mausers good, if you happen to see one for sale.

If you can't find a mauser in it's original condition, a russian capture is the best option. They have a little russian stamp on them, but otherwise they're 100% original, some with very early production dates.

Price range from 300 to 700$...they seem to be in very good shape.
They also offer the Yugoslavian M48 version.

Yugo M48 is very solid, well built but is not exactly the same with the original German Mauser K98, has several very small differencies.

If you are just looking for a shooter, just buy a Mitchels Mauser. I bought one last year, and they are fantastic. Its a brand new rifle, all new manufgr.

Since you mentioned Mitchel Co. , in Macedonia in the last months there is an affair in the MoD where someone sold wast amount of surplus Macedonian Army M48s for 25$ a piece to exactly this US firm. If available, details to follow soon.

Get a nice code S/42 if you can afford it.
It's not so bad when the numbers aren't matching 100% as many soldiers kept the bolt in their breadbag when surrendering the rifle at the end of WWII. If the rest matches and is in good condition with a clean bore and sharp grooves, you have a rifle that will probably outlast you.

Mitchell's Mausers are a waste of money. They are not German K98s. They aren't even wartime rifles. If you just want a WW2-era "mauser," then there are many, many other options for much less than MM and with more history, or you can get a m24/47 for about $90.

As has already been noted, Russian-capture K98s are the way to go if you want a German wartime model. Some are all matching and in great condition. They often clean-up very well. They seldom have cleaning rods, but original or repros are easy to come by, as are slings, accessories, etc.

Classic Arms, Inc. has some nice hand-selected RCs, including matching S/42 codes for $350, but the already mentioned Empire Arms is your best bet to get exactly what is advertised, although they are lacking in more basic K98s right now.

I already have a M48A. I have been told that Mitchell Mausers makes their own proof marks, is this ture? I look at AIMS and go from their.

Or you could buy the same rifle they sell for a 1/3 to 1/4 price everywhere else. Mitchells Mausers are the most overpriced gits the Mauser market.

15k? that's insane.
If the scope isn't scratched up or foggy they go for ~4k here

There's always the Turkish Mauser(8mm). I like mine. They go for $80-$150. *ducks head to avoid flaming*

I got a Mitchell Mauser Yugo M48 A about four years ago? Then is was a good deal it cost about $247 with shipping, but it came with the clean rod and site hood. I spent about I think about $20 more then picking one up from a store. But now they cost way to much. I think I'll hit up the local stores and see what they have in stock and then go from there.

Make sure the numbers match for a good one because the Russians messed most of them up. They should go for about $300-600 unmatched and maybe close to a thousand or up for matching. Hope it helps.

I was at one store and they had them for under $300, like $220-250 range. some had matching numbers some did not. They looked ok, they needed a good cleaning though. :)

Be careful because if they're matching at that price they either 1) Don't know what they're doing or 2) Are trying to get you...

Did the USSR put their own numbers on them? I think the most I have seen is matching bolt, receiver and floor plate. Is it then better to buy from AIM?

You mean every single small part matching?
