Israel Strikes Black Gold

Israel may have struck gold – black gold, that is. A deposit containing around 980 million barrels of oil was discovered today (Tuesday) at a drill-site east of Kfar Saba. The exploration company Givot Olam said that the Meged-4 oil well has exceeded original predictions and contains an extremely valuable deposit of oil.

The company announced last September that it had found signs of oil at the site, but underestimated the amount, predicting it contained only 100 million barrels of oil.

Of the 980 million barrel reserve, only 20% is extractable from its location 4,800 meters below ground. The value of the oil at today's prices is about $46 billion.

Three years ago Givot Olam announced they would be drilling in the Meged-2 well to a depth of 5,200 meters in the Rosh Ha'ayin region near Tel Aviv. Though there were indications of both gas and oil accumulation, the formation of rock at the site precluded oil production.

Before Israel’s withdrawal from the Sinai, geological surveys showed that had Israel pumped the Sinai’s oil it would have rendered Israel fully independent from foreign oil.
