Mohammed (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=mohammed&sid=breitbart.com) will likely become the most popular name for baby boys in Britain by the end of the year, The Times reported on Wednesday, citing government data (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=%22government+data%22&sid=breitbart.com).

Though official records (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=%22official+records%22&sid=breitbart.com) from the Office for National Statistics (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=%22Office+for+National+Statistics%22&sid=breitbart.com) list the spelling Mohammed 23rd in its yearly analysis of the top 3,000 names given to children, when all the different spellings of the name are taken into account, it ranks second, only behind Jack, according to The Times.
There are various different spellings of the name because when it is transliterated into English from Arabic (http://search.breitbart.com/q?s=arabic&sid=breitbart.com), families spell it as closely to their own ****unciations as possible.
In total, 5,991 baby boys were given some version of the name Mohammed, with 6,928 baby boys named Jack.
Thomas was third with 5,921 names, with Joshua and Oliver rounding out the top five.
According to The Times, if the growth of the name Mohammed continues -- it rose by 12 percent last year -- the name will take the top spot by the end of this year.

Will this name top the list because of high birthrates in Muslim populations or because foreign names are becoming popular in British culture?

The reason its high up is because a high percentage of muslims use it as a first name. Its not really shocking that its up there.

Unless Jack Oliver () Christian/Agnostic/Atheist comes home from school with the name Muhammad Ali X, I don't see what everybody is freaking out about.
It is plainly limited to the Muslim population. And personally, I don't see how names will be a stumbling block in integration.

I live and go to college in a very diverse part of England, i can tell you first hand that ethnic tension is very high. im not just talking about whites vs everyone, somalies hate asians, indians hate pakistanies etc etc. in my opinion public tension is inevitable with all the different communities keeping to themselves. i am in no way racist but i fail to see how people coming to his country to live of the Government will lead to a brght multi ethnic future. im not sayiny all immigrants are like that but the majority of the ones i know are. i apologies if ive offended everyone, its not my aim just my firss hand veiws.

Im sure your views would be vastly diifferent if there where no jobs in your area because an immigrant will do the same work for half the money. doesnt affect me personally but it does people i know. im no racist but not all immigration is good. the town i live in probly has a popilation of 122,000, with 500 eastern europeans turning up by the bus load every week. i have no problem with people who actively contribute to this country but people seeing Britain as a place to come because of 'Good Benefits' piss me off. im sure they would feel the same if hundreds of thousands of Brits turned up on their doorstep asking for money.

I can remember when people in Britain used to say the same thing about the Irish. Bigots and racists (of which you claim you are not one) used to try and garner hysteria that Paddy would be the top name if the immigrant Irish who were doing the 'same work for half the money' kept breeding.

I just about remember the signs in the windows of businesses in Britain, "No Dogs. No Irish". Perhaps you may have some relatives who remember those sings too Mr Duffy?

Absolutely spot on.
Good post.
A little bit of historical perspective is needed when dealing with all these hysterical right wingers hyping it up about how Britain is being taken over by muslim fanatics.
Catholics were being demonized in Britain in the same way that muslims are now and the massive Irish Catholic influx into Great Britain that started 150 years ago makes present day muslim immigration look like kids stuff.

Guess what present day Britain is not a Catholic ruled colony of the Irish Republic or the Vatican

Let's break it down for the seriously mentally retarded:

There are 50 males. 45 of them are non-Muslim. 5 are Muslim. 4 out of those 5 Muslims are called Mohammed - it's very common, due to religious reasons and all that jazz.

The 45 non-Muslims are broken down thus:

3 are called Thomas.
2 are called Daniel.
5 are called David.
2 are called Robert.
1 is called Kieran.
3 are called Kyle.
2 are called Brian.
3 are called Michael.
1 is called Tarquin (oh dear).
2 are called Quentin.
3 are called Julian.
2 are called James.
1 is called Craig.
2 are called Ashley.
1 is called Peter.
1 is called Philip (he prefers Phil).
2 are called Martin
3 are called Lee.
4 are called Mark.
1 is called Christopher.
And finally we have William.

Now, we can see that Mohammed is rivalling both Mark and Dave for the top spot for most common male names, despite the fact that there are only 4 Muslims named Mohammed in a crowd of 46 others that AREN'T called Mohammed.

I am not a bigot nor racist as the point of my post was not to highlight colour or ethnicity more that people are coming to this country on mass to sponge of the system. my family moved here and worked hard thus contributing to Britain. i have absaloutely no problem what so ever with migrants wishing to do the same regardless of their colour or religion, i just dislike the fact that thousands of people come here to live off the government, if you can argue that this is not the case i suggest you get out more and have a look around. take it as you will i know im not a racist, i just care about the future of this country. anyway rant over.

Can you show some figures about how many immigrants come to "sponge off the government?" You state that "thousands" do, yet I have yet to see any supporting info. Walking down the street how can you tell whether someone who is an immigrant is "sponging off the government" or if they are working hard?

LOl i have no facts or figure to back up my wild claims, all i can say is spend a month in town down south of England and see for yourself. i dont consider gangs of young males starting fights betweem different ethnic groups particularly valueble to this society. as for my family i can say every member of my family has always worked hard. my opinions may be seen as racist of bogoted, hypocrytical even whatever. all i can see is my family came here and in my opinion earnt the right to live here. All i can say is your views would be vastly different if you lived where i do. i have no more to say on the matter as i have no physical proof of what im saying just what i have seen. if not already this thread will easily turn into a slogging match and if im honest i cant be arsed! :)
