This is an attempt to talk about something other than fighting, how gay people are, or defecating in one's pants. What is the last book you read for pleasure?
I recently finished a book called The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It was pretty good. A little strange, but well written and thought provoking. It is one that I wouldn't mind using in a high school class. I think it would prompt interesting discussions among teenagers.
I'm nearly finished with a book called The Zero Game by Brad Meltzer. He writes pretty good political mysteries... for lack of a better descriptor.
So what are you reading????
I am looking forward to reading a book titled Going West written by a friend of mine. However, he hasn't given it to me yet.... it will be interesting to read a work of historical fiction written by someone that I know. :D

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson
"Jennifer Government" by Max Barry (For the second time). It's a very dark comedy and satire on the world of corporations and contracts. Parts of it had me in hysterics.
I'm currently reading "The March up" by Ray L. Smith and Bing West which is about the First Marine Division in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
When I've finished that I'll be starting "Great Expectations" by Charles ****ens. It's one of those books I've always intended to read but never actually gotten around to.

I just finished "the noonday demon" by Andrew Solomon. It's a book about depression. It was good, for the most parts. I also just finished Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. Not really my style but I couldn't find anything else I would like to read. Right now I'm reading a swedish book about rhetoric, which is very interesting.

Just read "Three Comrades" by Eric Maria Remarque. It is a novel about a man, his friends and his one true love.
It is a very good novel, even though you can see the tragic ending already on page 15. Not that I dislike that, but you see that he's life improves little by little in the German post World War I-period. But you just sence chatastrophy in the making.
As I write this, I am about to open the book called "Pan", a Norwegian classic by Knut Hamsun. An author that Norwgians has a love/hate-relationship towards.

Just finished re-reading Touching the Void by Joe Simpson. I read it when it first came out, but wanted to re-read it before I get the DVD (missed it at the cinema).
Before that it was Smrt i Dervis (Death and the Dervish) by Ivo Andric which I picked up in Pristina last month. Not really for pleasure but Most na Drini (Bridge on the Drina) really improved my Serbian and I'm getting really rusty, especially now I'm trying to pick up more Arabic (not up to reading anything yet - maybe one day the Qu'ran...

Just finished reading the "Otherland" series by Tad Williams. Fascinating, mind blowing Scifi.
Before that I read "American Gods" Neal Gaiman, awesome crossover between mythology and contemporary society. Had me laughing mindlessly at times.
For sci-fi fans I can recommend "Vurt" by Jeff Noon, the most awesome love story I ever read. Too harsh for hippies. Too beautiful for Bikers.

"War And Strategy" By retired General J.H. , and "Millitary guide" .

Too much military for you , ha ?
Just finished re-reading Touching the Void by Joe Simpson. I read it when it first came out, but wanted to re-read it before I get the DVD (missed it at the cinema).
That's one I'm going to have to find a copy of. I've seen the movie on DVD and in equal parts it was one of the most gut wrenching and inspiring things I've ever seen.
Gaz... I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read Great Expectations. I will read it when I finish the book I am reading. Perhaps we can "discuss" it at some point. :D
I look forward to it. I've seen two movie versions of it, the latest which had Ethan Hawke and Robert De Niro in it was rubbish - they actually renamed characters in it!!! The other version is the David Lean one from the late forties which was fantastic.
Anyway, I'm hopefully going on a classics kick, after that I'll get through all the ****ens, Wilde and Joyce I meant to read but never did. :D

Farmgirl, underlining in MLA is a strict no-no, in both the bibliographical listing and in-paper citations. I know that this is from the last MLA revision. I also know that underlining was preferred under the previous MLA revision.
...Farmgirl, have you ever read The Big Sleep, Beloved, City of Glass, Dracula, Kindred, Pride and Prejudice, or Sherlock Holmes?

Just finished "Imediate Action".
On the last chapter of a book about No. 4 Commando written by one of it's troop officers during WW2. It was written in the 50's and gives a good account of what it was like to live/fight with the commando units, rather than the impression gained from watching 'The Longest Day'!
About a third of the way through 'War and Peace' and have been for some time! I recomend it though, it's a very engaging read.
Just bought 'Tornado Down', by and about Flt. Lt.'s John Peters and John Nichol who were shot down in the Gulf War. Also bought 'Waterloo, A Near Run Thing', by David Howarth. looking forward to reading both.

I don't care much for Morrison's style. I won't read another book of hers by choice. In general, books that have been Oprah's choices for her book club... are not for me. It seems that O and I don't have the same taste in literature. Of course... I don't care much for O in general, so that might have something to do with it! :D

BTW, was it Poe that wrote the story about a king or a prince having a ball and I think the devil showed up and started killing everyone in a wierd way? I think it takes place during the Spanish Inquisition or so. Anyhoo that was ok.

Nope that was my first DeMille book, plan on reading more eventually though. Next time I go to my library's book sale I'll pick some more of his, they always have plenty for only 50 cents. I probably already have enough books from the library I've acquired over the years to last a lifetime though, when they're so cheap I can't help it.

Have you read other books by DeMille? The Charm School is one of my all time favorite books. It's been around for awhile, but I loved it when I read it. I should read it again sometime. I'm pretty sure I've read everything that he has written.
Read The Charm School and let me know what you think. I need to read it again. I know I really liked it at the time. I'm not sure now if it was that good, or if it was just the time I was reading it.
I'm a sucker for books too... I've got a ton laying around that I haven't read yet, but it doesn't keep me from buying more!
Sure thing ma'am. Don't expect any reivews from me soon though, I'm already knee deep in books I need to read for my edumucation. Last thing I need is a great book to lure me away from those dry political science textbooks p-) . But this summer I'll check it out.

Hey Nawlins and Tane Angle,
Didja know they made an arthouse movie about that book, starring Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs) and Gary Oldman(Bram Stokers:Dracula)? It's very cool, one of my favorites, actually. FWIW, It's got Richard Dreyfuss in it too.
It's a cheap DVD now, $19.99 in a clearance bin last Christmas.
Amazon might have some as well.
I just finished reading Dark Winter by Andy McNab. The bad guys are Jemah Islamiyah extremists working outta Penang! Gotta love that! woot (It's an ANZAC thing, you wouldn't understand... p-) )

The last book I read completely was Badge of Glory by Douglas Reeman. I'm in the middle of Pride and Prejudice at the moment. I'm looking to get Jane Eyre at some point in the near future.
I enjoy reading ****inson and Poe, too. Tell-tale Heart was a great story.
Poe is quite the case... he was a strange one! I like "The Masque of the Red Death."
That is probably my favorite Poe book. Of course I dont read Poe unless I have too and even then I wont read most of them. But I guess it was the fact that this book had a really creepy and vengeful plot to it. Plus its not confusing like most of Poe's stuff.
BTW, was it Poe that wrote the story about a king or a prince having a ball and I think the devil showed up and started killing everyone in a wierd way? I think it takes place during the Spanish Inquisition or so. Anyhoo that was ok.
It sounds like you might be thinking of "The Masque of the Red Death." That's not exactly it, but you're in the ballpark... I like that one. It's filled with symbolism. Give it a read, and let me know what you think.

Finished two books actually...
The "just for fun" one was "Big Fish" by Daniel Wallace.
The other was "The Ultimate SNiper" by Maj. John L. PLaster, USAR (Ret.)
Both are EXCELLENT reads.
Been reading a lot lately, since my throat is still a bit scratchy still. I think I have read about 6000 pages over the last four weeks. Weather has been nice lately so rather than do the internet surf thing I am hanging out catching some rays and....reading.
Of course, I have a wireless network and my roommate surfs siting outside inthe backyard. I need a laptop. :)

My last book was "The COnfusion" by Neal Stephenson. It is the sequel to "Quicksilver", and part two of a trilogy called the Baroque Cycle.
They were OUTSTANDING, if you have any interest in 17th century British and/or French politics, pirates, exploration, science, exploration, etc.
Another excellent book by the same author is titled "Cryptonomicon".
Read them. Do it.

Don't know about Afghanistan, but The March Up was written by two former Marines who tagged along with the 1st Marine Division on their way up to Baghdad.

I'm reading Alastair MacLean's "HMS ULYSSES" for God knows what time, it's a great book.
I also just read Le Fanu's "CARMILLA", wasen't the worst book I've read.
I read alot and when I got the 5th Harry Potter book I read it all straight in 18 hours.
And the first time i read Lord of The Rings I read it in 5 or 6 days, but that was during one school week.
I've also read All of Desmond Bagley's books, anyone else here read anything by him?
And I'm reading Winston Churchill's autobiography about his young years.

I think you'll be better of by reading AARs and such than books. At least for couple of years or so.

Farmgirl, you're an english teacher but you don't know that you are supposed to italicize book titles? :|
(not meant to be offensive at all...)
Actually, the proper form for books is to underline. It is also acceptable to italicize. Thanks for trying to help.... ;)
How I do it, and no one has complained yet. I don´t think there is only one way
to do it. The only important thing is to be consistent and clear to the reader, so that
he or she can find the book easily.

This is an old pic, I'm currently re-reading "Vietnam the helicopter war" by Philip D. Chinnery, very good book, I own 1 Tom Clancy book, the one where they start up "Rainbow 6", a friend of mine has them all, so I loan most of them :D The book "Special Operations" from Tom Clancy is very good too. Also a first print of "Im Westen nichts Neues", and a Dutch translation, but those are not here. Nor is a great book on dday, with a foldout of all the beaches with very detailed info on it, loaned it then I think. Also in the pic, at the very bottom row, the grey-brown book is a first edition of "Guns of Navarone"
