My grandpa get choked up over Beer Barrel Polka. Brings him back to prewar Germany. My uncle does the same over Stars and Stripes Forever, Marine Hymn, and a handful of vietnam era oldies.

My grandpa used to get all choked up whenever the Norwegian national anthem was played. Memories from the resistance.

A paitent of mine cried every time I turned on the oxygen for him, he was waiting in line for the gas chamber when he at the last moment was called away to pick up the crap after some officers dog. Outside, he saw the soldiers open the can of Zyklon and drop it into the chamber. Any "hissing" sound ticked him off.

SSgt. Barry Sadler's Ballad, John Anderson's Seminole Wind, and Alan Jackson's Remember When are special to my father.

AJ is a tear jerker with Remember When.

Sometimes "American Pie" gets to me. When it does I like to brew a pot of tea, read an Oprah book club book, and snuggle my cat all the while experienceing aromatherapy.

Thats terrible.
The man had to live his life with that fear. Even in the most comfortable of situations he must never have felt safe.

You wouldnt believe what a hard time that guy had.

On a more interesting note, I once had 2 patients that served on different sides in the war. One polish soldier and one romanian forced into german service.
Not thinking of their background I put them in the same room, and they soon came to discuss WW2. It turned out that they had most likely fought each other, some gridlock battle in Poland. They discussed landmarks and so forth and in the end they came to the conclusion that the pole had taken part in a prisoner snatch that nicked the romanians best mate.

They became best of friends during their stay at the hospital. talk about a small world.
