Many workers had extensive burns from the hot bricks

Thirty-one dirty and disorientated workers have been rescued from a brickwork factory in China, where they were being held as virtual slaves.

Eight workers were so traumatised by their experiences that they were only able to remember their names.

The labourers had to work unpaid for 20 hours at a time, and were only given bread and water in return.

The brickworks, in the poor inland province of Shanxi, is owned by the son of the local Communist Party secretary.

Local police told the BBC that the owner, Wang Binbin, had been arrested, and that his father, Wang Dongji, was under investigation.

Several other people have also been arrested, although the foreman is still on the run.

Harsh regime

According to a report in the Beijing News, citing the Shanxi Evening News, the rescued workers had been duped into working at the factory.

Once there, they faced a harsh regime. One man was even reported to have been beaten to death with a hammer, because he did not work fast enough.

When police raided the brickworks they discovered foul-smelling workers who had been wearing the same clothes for a year.

They had no facilities to wash, and they had not had their hair cut or brushed their teeth.

"The grime on their bodies was so thick it could be scraped off with a knife," the Beijing News said.

They had burns over their bodies after being made to carry bricks that had not cooled down properly.

Police are now arranging for the workers to get the wages they should have been paid, and then they will send them home, although the eight disorientated workers cannot remember where that is.

Local people said the brickworks, near Linfen, would have been closed down a long time ago had it not been for the protection of the party secretary.

China has tens of millions of migrant workers.

They leave their rural homes in search of work, but often have to endure harsh conditions, bad treatment and low pay.

There is little they can do about their lot, particularly when, as in this case, factory owners are protected by powerful local officials.

Those "corrupt" government officials are scumbags, remember those workers are rescued by the police whom are also public servants.

More than likely both the father and son will get the bullet, if reports about worker beaten to death is true.

And the foreman when they catch him.

Probably because last month's red envelope was a bit lighter than it should have been.

I dont know too much about China's internal workings, but you would have thought with the death penalty applying to corruption in the government that this would curtail it? Obviously the benefits outweigh the risks??

Chinese mentality is the obsession with wealth, bringing honor to the family name. Each chinese new year, we wish each other well, and hope that year will bring prosperity etc. It's pretty sick how they go about it. People from hong kong try to dissociate themselves from the mainland because they give a bad reputation.

The issue is enforcement.

The chances of being caught is not very high, and keep in mind how truly large China is as well as how widescale the corruption is.

If the chances of being caught was to dramatically increase, corruption would decrease, but as is, the system is not strong enough to stamp out vermin like those mentioned in the article.

Chances are however, the ones who were caught in the article, will be shot. Trials are short, and sentences are carried out quickly, hopefully there will be a follow up article in a few weeks about the deaths of the scum involved act which made me tear just reading it, the pictures are unbearable.

cost+transportation+customs+whole sale profit+retail sale profit=1$

l think slave labourers should be much more common than we guessed in china.

Yup, and in other parts of the world, didn't they find a similar situation to this a few years ago on one of the American Territorial Islands?

Sucks, money being the root of all evil and all that...

Yes. Given that autotheft can lead to a bullet to the back of the head, I think that slavery is likely to be higher up on the list of crimes that lead to the death penalty. The Central Govt will be very angry with the people who did this - it has brought great shame on China. So, they are going to get shot for sure.

So all chinese government official and public servants are corrupt and can be bought? How about take the story as it is and acknowledge that the Chinese police has done a decent job bringing the scumbags in this case to justice even though they pretty much has one of their hands tied when dealing with corruption crimes involving party members or their relatives.

There is a lot of good people working for the government and probably there is also a lot of bad ones, and the majority are somewhere in between ie. generally decent people doing their job and making a living but probably were never put on the spot by an opportunity, who are we to judge or know how they would react?

Sorry mate if that is the scope of what you think chinese mentality is then you have been living in a cave. Try to find out about Lao Zhi (Dao), Kong Zhi (Yu) and Shun Zhi (Fa).

Your comment about Hong Kong and mainland people tells a lot more about "your" mentality than chinese mentality, which you know squat.

human life are less than worthless in chicoms PRC. these chicoms government officials were busted is because they were on the wrong side of power struggle currently going on within the chicoms CCP government.

typically, the chicoms would try to cover everything up and jailed anybody that knows anything including reporters and then go on pretends that chicoms PRC is heaven on earth, the most advance nation in the world.

but this time because the involvement of foreign media and reporters, and also because of the 2008 chicoms Olympics. therefore the chicoms were pressured and forced to react, but there are still billion poor chinese going through similiar or worse plight.

people should thank their god and lucky star that they were not borned or forced to lived in that heaven on earth, the most advance nation in the world, the most powerful super power known as the chicoms PRC!
