assuming troops ever go up against another forcve that uses night vision/or is similarly technical, how would a rifle like hk416 show up at night w/ all that gas that's expelled?
any ideas?

I think the heat&noise from tanks, humvees and choppers will make that a non factor. Plus the bang from the gun. But I am still curious to your question though..

Uh, why the HK416 in particular? Is there something special about the rifle that I've missed in the million posts made about it on here?

As opposed to all of the rifles that don't expell hot gas from their muzzles? A very poor design feature indeed!

There isn't a firearm on earth that wouldn't show up on NV/Thermal like a New Years Eve fireworks display. Even a cigarette shows up like one.

Yep muzzle flash looks like a roman candle through goggles, I guess its all the little bits of burning/unburnt propellant etc

With a suppressor added to any rifle, you can use a IR laser with NVG to do some damage in the night. so the HK 416 initially has a slight gas leakage from the regulator that when used with a suppressor, you can barely see a small gas exposion from the front of the block. this was filmed during one of the HK 416 shoot with a undisclosed suppressor manufacuture. after this, a redesigned 416 surfaced and it is what you see today. the 416 today does not expose any flash signature from the gas while using a suppressor.
