Just watched 'Land of the Dead' recently and taking some inspiration from the 'what would you go to war with?' thread; for a bit of fun I propose a question, what is your preferred weapon for a war against zombies?

To kill a zombie (as much as I can gather from movies) you'd need headshots. Any head-trauma seems to be okay, you could use a nail gun or base ball bat if you want.

You can't just blow it up as chances are you'll blow it's legs or torso off but it'll be 'alive'. Burning them seems okay but they won't 'die' immediately.

Sometimes they'll be lots of them at close range, so you'll need some stopping power so as to halt or slow their advance while you try to get away.

There needs to be some serious thinking as you'll need a weapon with little recoil for an easy headshot whilst at the same time some stopping power.

My choice is a Benelli M4 semi-auto shotgun with some buckshots (you really can't miss with a shotgun) or a UMP 45.

I agree, the Saiga has it hands down. But you will need A LOT of magazines. I still say one needs head to toe chainmail. All they have to do is close in and bite you. If they can't bite, then you have a chance. I would want a short .223 as a back-up. All it takes is a shot to the head. caliber doesn't matter.

If they are Movie Zombies, i´d pick an APC. Amphibious and with NBC Protection.
Zombies cannot swim, are slow and dumb. They cannot cross rivers to follow me, they cannot keep pace on the road, they cannot get inside the vehicle.
For Individual Arms
They are superior in close Combat. A Machete or a better, a Sword are only of little help against a limited amount of them.
Because of this, a scoped rifle and maybe a shotgun are my best bet to keep me alive during short intervals of time.

I would drive to rural areas to pick up supplies, where I would have to face 10-12 of them at best.

An admantium samurai sword with full body armor that is at least half an inch thick all over with a USAS-12 auto shotgun with 300 rounds and thats just my last resort. Id have a small platoon with me riding in all of these vehicles:

Id have a humvee with a minigun and an automatic grenade launcher on top with 1 inch thick armor plating all over it and run flat tires. Id have 3 of these as support fire.

Then Id be in an Abrams battle tank backed up 3 Le Clerc French autoloading battle main battle tanks with Spectre gunship support up above as well as 2 Cobras circling above and a Kiowa to be safe for scouting.

And for medical/food support Id have my small fleet of fuel ammo and resupply convoy behind or encircled by my main force in the pargraph above.


All of these vehicles would run on a fuel cell that gives then a MPG rating of 200 miles to the gallon and each cell is equivalent to 10 gallons.

Top that!! Its no way in hell ANY of us should even get blood on our clothes!

First rule of survival is ammo availability - so I'll go with anything that's chambered in 9x19, .223 and 12.ga. If I'm raiding some local "Tackle & Lure" mom and pop shop - I want the best chance that they stocked some in the back room. It's true for zombie or SHTF urban survival scenario.
What kind of Zombies are these? There are so many diffirent kinds now - they kind that walk and growl in thousands, the kind that run, the kind that you must destroy the head, than the head or spine and finally the ones that "twitch" if you miss the head...
I'd pick my Mini-14 and CZ-75B in 9mm for "getting the feck out of dodge"... My Mossberg 590A1 is nice, but I know what 300 shotgun rounds wiegh like.

As for Land of the Dead - it was ammuzing how they would go full-auto on imobilized zombie from 50 yards and hit everything but the head with the entire mag from M16A1... Zombies are not really taking cover or shooting back - I see nothing better than carefully aimed head shots.

Since it doesn't take much damage to the head to kill them, I'd go with my AR or my 10/22. Both have large mag capacities, high rates of fire, are fairly small for CQB type engagements, but have the range to take out targets at a distance. Also, ammo is relatively plentiful. I'd also want a pistol on me though. Probably something in 9mm for ammo capacity. I'm thinking about buying a Glock 17, so I guess I'd chose that.

I went rather mad with "Survival Horror" genre ever since the Original Resident Evil/Biohazard game - played through each single one multiple times since :)

What I've learned from that is

a) Never be the one with the best weapon when the infestation starts - you will die and just be the cameo, from whom the main character picks up the fancy weapon from... Funny, but the first firearm I purchased was a 9mm full frame CZ-75B... Second was a 12ga pump action shotgun - who says that media does not influence us?

b) Become a Master of Unlocking... If you can't master unlocking, then be an eX-Airborne and eX-SEAL, currently serving with the elite paramilitary police tactical response unit at 24 years of age - that should certainly improve your likelihood of survival.

But seriously, if a real zombie infestation began - it would have gotten mopped up within days even in the cities like LA, hours with our neighbors to the East :D The history has long proven that one man with a gun can control hundreds of unarmed men. Bastions of Liberalism like Berkley and Santa Monica would probably go instinct, since their means of survival depends solely on petitioning and protesting... In the world of Living Dead - they'd probably protest that killing a re-animated corpse is still murder and that they still feel...

My reply is strictly to my locale :) Thanks to me living next door to one of the soon to be extinct Bastions of Liberalism - my ammo would have to come from the back of BIG 5 and the like it seems.

Since zombies don't really take cover and most of the engagement is going to take place from the short range - I guess you really want something with maximum wound channel and maximum energy dump. If what I heard is true and the impact of a .223 round would sever the spine with a hit 2" within either side of it - a certain plus.

Also, if these are partially decomposed zombies - 7.62x39 would make nice clean holes... I really want something that would blow chunks out :) 7.62x39 JHP or soft tip perhaps? :)

Agreed, carrying 5.56 would be easier and you can get more. But You dont have to be highly mobile and fast. Since they dont take cover, and usually are slower than living, I can place steady shots into their heads. And the cool part is if there is a crowd of them, I have a good chance that one of the rounds might hit 2 zombies. I wish AK-74 ammo was popular in US. I wouldn’t mind a nice AK-74M with a red dot and a 60 round mag.
But at the end it all comes down to a gun that goes BANG. AND I TRUST THE AK WITH MY LIFE.

As for blunt weapons - like smashing zombies in the head... Unless you take some kind of weapon related martial art or play baseball/cricket - there is only so many swings you can make before you tire yourself out... Even then - few hundred swings and you are zombie food
