View Full Version : What wrist-watch do you wear?

This one is mine:

http://www.onpoi.net/ah/pics/users/438_1083783503_dsc00303.jpg

It is the Suunto Vector, equiped with an alti-meter, barometer, a compass and of course some time functions...
I have it now for 2 years+ and it is an outstanding watch. The illiminous back-light is not as bright as the one of my Casio G-shock (a model out of '95), and all functions are quite simple to use. Batteries can be replaced by yourself and not some expensive jeweller (which is pretty hard to find in the most critical parts of this world).

What type of wrist-watch is used by you?

I've been thinking about getting a g-shock, but I've never liked the fully digital versions since they don't seem to hold time very well, atleast my other casios hasn't.

So a few questions if you will. Does it hold time well, i.e. do you have to adjust it all the time? Size, is it thick, does it get stuck on clothing and stuff? How does it work at night, can you see the dials in complete darkness or is it backlit? Is it easy to handle, stopwatch and such things, even with gloves on? How scratch-resistant is it?

Oh and I have a citizen something basic, it doesn't work at night and it's starting to fall apart. So if I know I'll need to see the time in complete darkness I'll use my casio illuminator, it's so basic it doesn't even have a model name.

I've flooded and/or broken a Tag Hauer, a Traser and several G Shocks (and they all gained or lost about 15 seconds a month). Never had a problem with my Seamaster (and it keeps perfect time)...

Suunto Vector, when I was lookin into it I was telling one of the guys I work with all of it's features. When I was done he asked me one question:
So does it tell the time? Damn good question!
Haven't had a problem with it yet.

Solar powered Pathfinder with compass and goodies:

Suunto Advizor, as seen in first post (works well):

Suunto M9 compass (counts as a wrist-implement!) ;)

Boring Timex USGI kinda watch:
http://images.orgill.com/200x200/6834071.jpg

I collect watches. I sepnt far too much on them all. Spent like $420 on that Suunto Advizor at a PX. $150 for the Pathfinder, $30 for the Twincept at the PX on Kelley Hill (3rd Brig., 3rd ID land), and the rest, who knows.

Here's my only tip: Learn to wear the watch backwards if you're in the military and are probably going to end up in combat. This allows you to see it when you're holding your weapon at the ready, allows you to see it with less arm movement (your inside wrist faces you more than your outside) and it also keeps the moon and other things from reflecting off of the face at night. If the backlight was inadvertantly triggered others would be less likely to see the light, especially in a blinding NVG environment!

My two cents!

Some really nice watches I see out here. I even went searching for my old G-shock, and look what I've found:

http://www.onpoi.net/ah/pics/users/438_1083861936_dsc00313.jpg

http://www.onpoi.net/ah/pics/users/438_1083861898_dsc00312.jpg

When you look close you can see that it survived some 7 years of service, a few scratches here and there, and the covering of some of the buttons are torn.
But I pulled it out of the closet after 2 years of not using it and it still worked, only 10 minutes behind the actual time. I think it also is a great watch for military use. The only real disadvantage compared to my Suunto is that it doesn't come with an alti-meter. The alti-meter of the Suunto helps me a lot when I'm between an airplane and mother earth...

@ MrSkorotsnoy: I do like your Suunto Advizor!

@ shrek : Nice tips about the backward-wearing, when I am out there in the field I do wear my wrist watch this way.

I don't like cold weather either, so I guess me and my watch are quite compatible.... ;)

Seriously, my Suunto does work good enough on temp till 15 degrees C below zero. Haven't got the chance to test it on some lower temps. Anyone here has some experience with Suunto's in extreme cold weather?

I'm supirsed none of you have those Israeli titanium dive watches that were being sold a few years ago. They have the tritium fillament, so it always glows, has a titanuim shock proof face casing and titanium band. However, you can't buy them anymore, and no more are being made, so I might stop wearing mine and get a G-Shock to tough it out with, will my ADI stays in the collectors case.

I have used the same G-SHOCK for 7 years now and it´s great. G-SHOCK works endlessly and it´s very RUGGED. My G-SHOCK is just a plane, raw watch. But i´m going to buy a new watch soon. I´ve been looking for a rugged reliable wrist watch that I can dive with. I´m searching for a watch that has a compass built in and a good backlight. G-SHOCK or SUUNTO is the watches that i´m thinking of buying.

I have an old Casio laying around somewhere that has been with me since the late '80s (they stopped making it a LOOOONG time ago). The original rubber strap is long gone and has been replaced by numerous others. Right now it's wearing it's second GUL strap.

Right now I'm wearing an older model Victorinox Base Camp with a separate compass (sorry about the size):

Here in the Netherlands, diving watches are also popular, Dutch marines wear them often. Also these watches have the tritium fillament. But I don't want a watch that glows instantly, could be glowing at the wrong time! So I prefer illiminous backlights.

Ok, the info I've found regarding the Garmin Foretrex 201 is that it runs on a lithiun battery for 15 hours straight. There is also a similar type that runs on 2x AAA batteries (the Foretrex 101). I see that you have the 201, is this truely capable to operate for 15 hours, even in cold weather conditions?

Nice watches guys, Im looking to get a new watch for myself. I currently use a Timex Reefgear dig watch and I was think of a Casio G-shock one. I would use it from everyday use to camping to hiking to water work. I looked at the Casio Tough Solar series and the no batteries needed sounded cool. Do those watches work good, and does the solar powered ones work as good as the ones with batteries? I want something close to all black color on the watch. My wrist isn't too big so nothing too big. Casio makes watches that keep time by updating using the atomic clock via sattelite link.

Might look into getting one.
They also light up when you tilt your hand to look at it.

I like watches with big faces, prefferably an LCD.

Going to buy a nice new G-shock soon.

What ones are those in the pictures that look like they're OD?

What does "Water resistant" mean? I can never understand that, does it mean i can fully submerge the watch in water? Or is it only rain proof.

I wear an "Alta Linea" watch for everything, very plain analog. And a fancy JAG watch for well, fancy occasions.

I have a gucci G-Shock watch lying around, but the battery died and i never got off my arse to get a new one put in. Will do when i go to basic training though.

I'm looking for a secondary watch...the G-Shock is beginning to get a little uncomfortable in rainy/sweaty conditions, not to mention a gigantic tan line rofl ...............

Get a nice analog watch and just wear the G-shock when your training or working out.

How about an all-weather clip-on? Why must a watch be worn? On the street I carry a pocket watch. I can't stand to wear a wristwatch. If I had to go out in the field, I would hook my timepiece onto a belt loop or eqpt...

I have had this one since 1989. It has made HALO jumps from 24,000', been to multiple combat zones, and it's good for formal events as well. It's the only watch I own. I paid $1500 for it back then. Best thing I ever bought.

I've got a big G Shock, but I'm massive so it looks like a normal sized watch on me :P . I'm on my third band, second rubber casing and third battery.

I've got the Luminox "Navy Seals" watch with the blue face. I've worn it a lot and it's been good. I've had good luck with Casios too.
