Ever get disorinentated while firing your weapon at night!! If you don't you are lying! Just wondering is it the noise or the flash which messes with natural night vision. If your in combat you will fire at anything that moves which does not respond to identify. While on steep hill, silhoette of you moving can happen. I was told never to flash light at night unless at base or dimmed(red). Do you ever fire you weapon on avto or semi at night? So distracting especially when squad is covering or suppressing. What experiences have you had during a night as sentry with your friend??

In which way do you get disorientated?
Do you not mark your arcs with reflector tape ? Do you wear NVG,what kind of weapon are we talking about here......proffesionals should always know which way their weapons are pointed :cantbeli:!especially in a section/Platoon/Company position!

Well I only hunt at night (wild boars). But it seems that it is flash that disorient you or rather disables your ability to recognize anything for few seconds...
I am rather night person so I feel comfortable at night even alone in the forest... Actually I feel more comfortable at night than during the day...

I often get so discombobulated in the night I tend to just spin in a 360 spraying magazine worth after mag worth of ammo. That night; it can be a real kicker , no wait thats homemade plum brandy that makes me do that. Sorry!

Is this not what happens when you mix your drinks with Chem light liquid?

it wouldn't matter to me as long as he is in another squad on the other side of a large hill!

My first time to fire at night my comrade had taken my BFA off the end of my rilfe. I was so blind by the flash I couldn't do anything for a few minutes.
I urinated in his canteen later on that night. Revenge is sometimes fun. :bash:

When i was in the NAM i would throw a flash grenade while i had night vision on . This would give me a milisecond of super brightness exposing all of the enemy positions at once . Then , blind , i would use the force to head shot every enemy soldier with in minute or two . I got a silver star for this :D

It takes 8-10 seconds for your eyes to re-adjust to the darkness after a "flash of light" or a muzzle flash. To help I usually keep one eye closed when using a light because your able to get your vision back in the dark faster, I'm not sure I'd use that tactic with a rifle though ;)

Id imagine this is less of an issue if your wearing NVG's...
Id also imagine is similar to "vertigo"- a condition that affects pilots flying at night. Basically when they are turning and twisted they get disoriented because at night the black sky looks no different than the black sea, so they dont know if they are going up or going down. Thankfully with NAVFLIR, Huds and TFR its less of an issue now.

Think of landing on a carrier under combat conditions (no lights) on an overcast night with no moon.

hm.. really smart, keep one eye closed, never thought of that, i must be a moron
nvg
never had, in my new group im not a squad leader, and its only the squad leader who has nvg,
in sweden nvg availibility is very poor.
--------------
I get confused during night, and when the squadleader tells me its okay to fire btw different "borders" I fire against anything suspected.
But I guess during the confusion of battle the system with "shooting borders" dont work perfectly...
but honestly i dont know what to think
----------------
anyway I like night more, I dont know why but It feels safer, maybe a false sence.

^ I've heard that story for real!
Blinding Lightning while wearing NVGs in tight formation, later approaching for a night landing on the Nimitz in crosswinds, rolling/pitching deck, all after a 12 Hr. combat mission over Afghanistan last May ....

One of the Lieutenants that used to be with my brother's ROTC unit was an F-14 RIO, and on one night just like I described they were coming in for a landing when one of their engines went out. They got waved off, and as they were coming back around, their second engine went out. So basically, they had to punch out. His lines got tangled during deployment, which basically meant that with absolutely no light he had to pull his lines apart and try to see when to flare (is that what it's called?) before landing in the water.
I had an instructor once give me a brief "lesson" on this "vertigo" effect. He had me close my eyes, and tilt my ear into my shoulder, and tell him the maneuvers I felt the plane was performing. After a minute or two with my eyes closed and my ear digging into my shoulder, I felt like we were doing barrel rolls. When I opened my eyes, we were on the same course we had been on, same altitude, same speed. He hadn't moved the plane a degree.
Basically, the way he explained it, the little hairs and fluids in our inner ears that tell us which way our bodies are oriented, can get confused very, very easily, without proper visual reference. Not only does this effect a pilot at night, but in IFR weather conditions also. Some believe this may have been a factor in the crash that killed JFK, Jr.

Actually I have a light case of vertigo simply because for years I ahve tensed my shoulders up . The receptors in your neck get buggered up and you get dizzy. I figure the whole disorientation is because your eyes take a certin time to accustome to the light situation around you in the dark. Like when you stand in a room and then turn off the light.Pupils widen and take in more light. When you have muzzle flash shoot up infront of you your pupils quicky contract to regulate the amount of light taken in. I guess the contracting goes quicker than the opening. Leaving you temporarily blind and therfor 1 sense down when it comes to navigation.

As has been mentioned we always trained to close the non-firing eye when firing at night, that way you can still see with one eye although my blinded eye still makes my good eye see funky. Luckily the newest generation NVG's go blank on a blinding light so you can fire with your lazer on at night and never get blind.
Or, like some of the guys I served with who had nothing but night jumps their whole career (Airborne people know what this means) you can just close your eyes, point towards enemy, and spray and pray baby!!

I just close my eyes and pull the trigger, then see who's still standing at the end of it.

Room clearing require you to fire with 1 eye half closed. When my squad was inserting into a village at night, which we had intellgence that rebels were resting there and praying. After short brifing we moved in. While 3 men had SVDs and were making a position on all entrances/exit of the village, approximatly 3. We stayed in contact using head set with chest intercom. We would wait until snipers were about 300 meter in forest away from village to take down any target coming out. I would never take part in stormin except guarding exit which team comes back through. Sometimes if there was time other guys form my squad would **** in the Mosques, mostly the sergeants. rofl
never had NVG's,you just got used to firing at night.
