Vietnam more Capitalist than the US.
Many Vietnamese-Americans are returning to Saigon to visit families and friends. Some of them are buying, building villas, businesses and getting married. This is especially true with the younger generation with no political and emotional "Baggage" of the Vietnam War.
The new generation of Vietnamese have no recollection of the war and are more interested in learning English, Adam Smith, and setting up a business.
As soon as a middle and commerce class emerges, demands for transparency in business laws will lead towards more political reforms and due process.
This happened in equally repressive governments in South Korea, and Taiwan. There is no doubt that Vietnam, and PRC will follow as a means to create international credibility within the WTO.
Besides, the war is over.

You mean, Ho Chi Minh City.
Besides, the war is over.
Truth.
I'll be flying over this time next year to adopt.

Thanks DJ...its going to be an adventure.
As to the topic of this discussion, I am a bit confused about the animosity of NhacPhi. I'll admit I probably do not know much about the guy, but he has received praise from Vietnamese here in the States and the world community for forcing some changes...or at least being the figurehead of those changes since being voted into power (the Prime Minister is the true leader in Vietnam).
Maybe the venom is directed towards his stint as Song Be's deputy chief...or the head party guy in Ho Chi Minh City.
Who knows...

I view Vietnam the same way I view China - i.e. as a tool used by our elite to offload jobs from America to where labor is cheaper. There's nothing quite as useful and convenient as a so called "open" China or Vietnam, where unbridled capitalism runs free with no protections for workers, no environmental regulations, a relentlessly pro-business climate (so long as the right palms are greased) - and the sheer beauty of a one-party system where anybody who complains is carted off. So yay to them, and to us.

So Sheds, what is our approach. Sure the palms are greased but does it differ from Detroit, or another city (country) where the managers are looking for cheap labor.
We are the king's of pork barrel spending. Is it about the war (and those now in power) as the thread initater suggests?
Or just modern economics?
I have to confess not every product in my home says "made in the USA" so I am without guilt?

I would say that yes, it's different. I see a problem with moving US jobs offshore vs US jobs moving to another US town (when both towns are equally subject to US labor/safety/environmental laws).

Same here- although I do make an effort to avoid Chinese made products when I can. Nothing against Chinese workers - but I just see it as doing my part to stem the tide...and of course I've had some bad experiences with Chinese made stuff.

Ironically, its not much different than in our country, we just have so many laws in place that it hides the money better and usually takes a whole lot more money.
