Valery Pavlovich Chkalov (Russian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_language): Вале́рий Па́влович Чка́лов) (February 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/February_2), 1904 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1904) – December 15 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_15), 1938 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1938)) was a Soviet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union) aircraft test pilot and a Hero of the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hero_of_the_Soviet_Union) (1938).
He developed several new figures of aerobatics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerobatics). In 1936 and 1937, he participated in several ultralong flights, including a 63-hour flight from Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow), Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union) to Vancouver, Washington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver%2C_Washington), United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) via the North Pole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Pole) on an Tupolev ANT-25 (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tupolev_ANT-25&action=edit) plane (June 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_18)–20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_20), 1937 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1937)), a non-stop distance of 8,811 kilometers (5,475 mi).
He was killed in a Polikarpov I-180 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polikarpov_I-180) plane crash during a test flight, due to engine fault (the authorities insisted that the plane fly before it was finished).
The village of Vasilyovo where Chkalov was born is now the city of Chkalovsk (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chkalovsk%2C_Russia&action=edit) (Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nizhny_Novgorod_Oblast)). The city of Orenburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orenburg) bore the name Chkalov from 1938 to 1957. There is a Chkalov Street in Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow), Nizhny Novgorod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nizhny_Novgorod), and several other Russian cities; a street in Vancouver, Washington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vancouver%2C_Washington) has borne the name Chkalov Drive since the 1970s (Google map (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=45.620178,-122.551103&spn=0.026747,0.055610&hl=en)). The subway systems of Moscow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moscow_Metro), Saint Petersburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Petersburg_Metro) and Nizhny Novgorod (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nizhny_Novgorod_Metro) each have a Chkalovskaya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chkalovskaya_metro_station) station.
