S.Korea seeking nuke submarines: report
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big News Network.com Monday 26th January, 2004

South Korea is pushing for the development of nuclear submarines to cope with regional security threats, a Seoul newspaper said Monday.

South Korea is considering deploying several 4,000-ton nuclear-powered submarines from 2012 as part of efforts to strengthen its defense against possible security threats from China, Japan and other nations in the region, Chosun Ilbo said, quoting an unnamed government source.

The Defense Ministry and the Navy have been aggressively considering developing nuclear submarines since May last year, the government official was quoted as saying. The Navy formed a task force for the project in June, he said.

South Korea would become the sixth country to own nuclear submarines following the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France and China, the paper said.

The U.S. Forces Korea found out late last year and has been striving to get more details, it said.

Seoul's Defense Ministry denied the report, saying the nuclear submarines would violate Seoul's commitment to a nuclear-free Korean peninsula

Anyone think it's true??

Probably not true. And the given reason is just stupid. To cope with regional security threats there's nothing better than small quiet high tech aip subs. Why should they waste their money on that? I'm quite sure they will design their own conventional submarines. 4000t is rather kilo class design than something nuclear.

Considering South Korea is concerned only about security of home waters I would have thought that a D/E or AIP submarine would have been a better idea, you get more for your money as well.

Dont know why the Japanese figure in their calculations - or the Chinese. A nuke - assuming that its not a ICBM carrier - is going to do nothing but raise the temperature is that part of the world ( and bring about what they want to avoid ) Agree that AIP is much better - low key and effective. Pity the RN dont have their conventional subs anymore.
