Just want to remind you that 50 years ago the french forces surrounded in their base were sieged by the communists and had to surrender.
Many french soldiers went into captivity , few came back home .

The actions of the Frence Paratroopers was nothing less than heroic. They lost the battle but fought courageously.

11 000 french against about 100 000 viets(100 000 but not at the same time) , 20 000 of them died , 4 000 french soldiers valid at the end of the 55 days battle.
I don't think you would stand just one hour, asshole.

Against overwhelming odds, the BEP fought till it was a lost cause.
It was The Legion's definative battle apart from Camerone IIRC.
DPGLAW your comments were un called for,and I doubt you're fit to lace many of the Legionnaires Boots from that day.

There were regular French units there as well as other French Union forces - Moroccans, Algerians, Vietnamese, etc. Many of whom fought to their last breath.

Argyll.....my comment was meant as a joke, well sort of. I am sure you are 100% correct in your statement abotu Legionairres...I know absolutely nothing about them so I will not even make a statement. My statement was directed at issues with the french in the present day. However, since it so obviously offens people and it is not taken as funny, I will delete my message as to not insite further arguments and to prevent myself from being kicked off for making commetns that start arguments.

Spreading stereotypes seems to be a common thing.
Jay Leno only had it (surrenduring frence-men) on 2 times this week...
Must be fun to pick at others...how about some _funny_ jokes ('remarks') insteads?

In all honestly, I think the stereotype is that all Texans are gun-crazy, and that all hoodlings drive around to do some driveby-shooting with tech-nines and killing innocent civilians.
If anyone knows better, the feel free to correct me with how your countries view of the above lines are.
Added: O-yeah...and that all lonely men living deep in the forrests of Montana are conspiracy-nuts and aspiring Una Bomber's...

 Boring, boring, boring. Such a subject have been discussed here hundreds of times. Nothing new. Do some researches on this Forum ;)
At least, the Dien Bien Phu experience saved many American lives 14 years later during the Khe Sanh siege :|
By studying the many mistakes done by the French it led to better close air support and the collapse of the NVA offensive...

During the battle, the units were a mix from marocans riflemen, a little armor unit, the foreign legion 13DBLE, vietnameses troops and 4500 paras who jumped during the battle under fire! Notice that 650 guys jumped for the first time, and that most of the paras were volunteers even if it was too late and they knew that they go in front of the death!
Whithout enormous air support (B52), it was quite evident that Khe San 's Marines will had the same situation!

Some paratroppers of the 2/1 RCP jump two days before the collapse. Everybody knew that Dien Bien Phu would fall.
Sacrifice and Courage. That was the message of the French soldiers at Dien Bien Phu.
14000 soldiers have been capture by the Vietminh on the 7th of may.
In july only 3000 have been release by the vietmin. The rest died of starvation.
Here is a link of pics who shows how the prisonners have been released by the vietmin (grafic).

The majority of the French troops engaged at Dien Bien Phu came from their Colonial Army. Units and individuals involved were regulars from France, Legionnaires from just about everywhere, Moroccans, Algerians, Senegalese, Thai’s, Laotians, and Vietnamese. As noted few were left to surrender, and of those even fewer survived their captivity at the hands of the Viet Minh.
Also noted was the fact many chose to jump into the perimeter after it was obvious battle was a lost cause, including many who had never jumped before. They knew their chances of getting out were slim to none, but they still went in. That takes balls.
It’s true that the French political leaders, like many of their ilk form other countries, have demonstrated time and time again that they have nothing dangling between their legs. The same however can not be said for the grunts in the mud.
Because the “comedian” here has publicly apologised for his cracks, and does show something, I’ll refrain from bashing him.
The battle is worth studying, both by professional soldiers and those interested in military history. It shows both the sheer incompetence possible by our political masters and high ranking General staff officers and the courage, tenacity and honour displayed by those actually in the trenches.
I’d suggest Bernard Fall’s “Hell In A Very Small Place” as a good place to start.
