Team flag at half-mast in Persian Gulf

HMCS TORONTO TROOPS MOURN LOSS

By Himani Ediriweera, Toronto Sun

CANADIAN TROOPS on duty in the Persian Gulf area lowered their flag to half-mast yesterday, mourning the sudden death of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs. HMCS Toronto was flying a Maple Leafs flag early yesterday -- there's an eight-hour time difference between the ship and Toronto -- when the team was eliminated. The sailors lowered their flag after watching the game on satellite TV.

The frigate is waiting for a new flag from The Toronto Sun and Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment. It should arrive in the next couple of weeks -- in time for next season.

TERROR CAMPAIGN

"HMCS Toronto half-masted her 'colours' to mourn the 4-2 series loss of the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs," Sub-Lt. Dale St. Croix wrote The Sun. "The captain and a large number of the ship's crew are avid Maple Leafs fans, and the loss was felt dearly."

The ship -- with about 235 sailors on board -- is deployed overseas in the international campaign against terrorism.

It left Halifax Jan. 12 and expects to return in mid-summer.

The captain took the loss in stride and -- following a bet made with newborn Flyers fans whose teams had been eliminated earlier in the post-season -- served dinner to the crew wearing a Flyers jersey.

Lightning will beat the fllyers. Tampa is young and energetic. Philly will waste its time hitting the other players and Tampa will skate circles around them.

The dead things are proof that money cant buy you titles! They have a budget 4 times as much as Calgary. The flames have won all their playoff games based on heart. Thats what the series came down to, pure desire, and Calgary just wants it more than anyone else!
