Still not sure that the west should have got too involved there - we got into bed with a load of unsavoury characters. Still reckon we'd have done better to have kept out of it. Just goes to show that we do cut off our noses to spite our faces at times.

Two great books on the Afghan war are:
Afghan Guerilla Warfare Jalali/Grau
The Bear Went Over the Mountain Grau
Each book is a breakdown of different actions from each side. Most of the "de-briefs" are one or two pages by the commanders of the forces in the action with commentary from the authors at the end of each incident. Great reads for anyone wanting to read about small unit/guerilla tactics.
And oldsoak, sometimes you have to do something with a bad situation, there are no good solutions in war.

Soldiers who fight them develop extreme hatred for them. Same **** happened in the jungles of Vietnam, 58,000 US dead another 120,000 wounded. Vietnamese dead 900,000 including civilians.

The problem is that war is not about killing people but about achieveing strategic / political goals - Soviet Union didnt achieve its goals in A-stan and USA didnt achieve its goals Vietnam - so they lose the war..sorry.
Thx a lot, Aussie and CAG
