Ozzy Osbourne to help Taiwan in U.N. membership Quest

TAIPEI (*******) - After 14 failed attempts at joining the United Nations using media campaigns and presidential appeals, Taiwan is turning to a local goth-style rock band backed by Ozzy Osbourne in its quest for membership to the world body.

The band, named ChthoniC, will travel to at least 80 cities in four countries by the end of the year, supported in part by the Taiwan government, which is providing pro-U.N. literature and a slogan-painted truck.

The band will visit Canada, Germany, Britain and the United States.

ChthoniC has also recorded a song urging the United Nations to let Taiwan join, even though its bid for membership keeps getting knocked down because of objections from Beijing.

"I'm not for any political party, but I'm for my poor country's joining the United Nations," band lyricist Freddy Lim told reporters on Wednesday at the tour's launch.

Ozzy Osbourne, a satanic-theme rocker known for biting heads off bats on stage, is helping set up 20 of the U.S. gigs, paying some transport costs and letting the Taiwan band promote U.N. membership as it wishes, Lim said. He said the band hooked up with Osbourne through personal connections.

Taiwan's leadership came up with the idea as it prepares to reapply for U.N. membership later this year, the cabinet's news office said on Tuesday.

China blocks self-ruled Taiwan's applications every year because it sees the island as part of its territory and not a separate country. The two sides split after civil war in 1949, and Taiwan left the United Nations in 1971 under Chinese pressure.

I can't really understand why Taiwan would want to join the Useless Nitwits. You have to pay millions (or billions if you the US) in order to be condemned by a bunch of third world dictators. Sounds like joining the UN should be a punishment, not a reward. And, yeah I know the UN does some good. Vaccinations programs and such. But that could be done by other groups. Why pay to join a organization run by corrupt beaucrats which puts nations like Zimbawe, Cuba, and Iran in senior positions on committes, who doesn't even recognizing Taiwan, and condemns only ONE country in the entire world as a violator of human rights. (You know who I mean)
They're sitting on some valuable real estate in NY, I say America should take it back.

Yeah I agree. But Taiwan has been helping out a lot of countries in time of crisis issue's and also get some foregin relations with other countries.

Probably has a lot to do with Taiwan wanting to build an identity apart from China. This will not sit well with the Chinese, and they may well send some ninjas after Ozzy - setting the stage for an epic battle between evil and also evil.

IIRC he also bit a dead bat that somebody threw onto stage, thinking it was fake? Overall, he seems to have bitten the head off of more things than the average person.

Hey if Bono can get involved in global affairs so can Ozzy.

Eventhough it may be a lost cause, I give Ozzy credit for having a cause to fight for.

Rock on!!!!!!

I can't really understand why Taiwan would want to join the Useless Nitwits. .

Its about making Taiwan a separate recognised country and not just a state (or province) of China - not love for the UN per se. Taiwan is doing all this now, because it knows that China cannot do anything to them while the Olympics is coming up in 2008. After 2008 however, China will stomp on Taiwan if it does not rejoin the PRC. So, Taiwan wants to get as much support internationally for its push for independence prior to the aftermath of the 2008 Olympics, when it will be judgment day.

International recognition is one of the key components for a nation state's legitimacy. The Republic of China (ROC) was a charter member of the UN. And a former permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Until the majority of UN Members including the US started to recognize the People's Republic of China (PRC). Due to the PRC One-China policy, it requires nations to give no official recognition to the ROC as a condition of maintaining diplomatic relations.

This has not hurt Taiwan economically, but it is politically isolated in the world stage.

For example, the IMF/World Bank, a UN organization, does not have economic statistics on Taiwan on the premise it belongs to China as a whole.

I have two dreams I want to see happen...

1. Arnold Schwarzenegger becomes President of the United States of America after the 61st Amendment is written, and declares war on another country... any country.

2. Ozzy going to the UN to make a diplomatic speech to the General Assembly.

It was done in front of record company executives once, but became part of the man the myth the legend that is Ozzy.

Ozzy bit the head off a live dove at a meeting with record company execs. At a concert, somebody threw a dead bat on stage, he bit the head off (thought it was fake). I've never heard of him biting the head off anything else. Except Kenny (you bast@rd).

Ozzy was the first concert I ever went to...1981. Saw him again on the Diary of a Madman and Speak of the Devil tours. Yes, I am old bastard. But I support most things Ozzy does because he sends me a disability check every month for my liver.

I've watched the Osbournes from time to time, seen him in interviews, and Ozzy comes across as a really cool genuine humble guy. His problem has been with the drugs and the grog over the years. To his credit he went completely cold turkey (which would not have been easy) and has stayed off the grog and drugs since he assaulted his wife while under the influence. I think he would be great to have involved in any worthwhile cause, even if Taiwan seems a bit left-field.
