Was the South African Mamba pistol ever produced in larger numbers? I read that 80 or so were imported to the US, did it run higher numbers on the home market or elsewhere? Many thanks!

Cheers

I doubt it. I've never seen one for sale in South Africa. They probably never got off the ground with the project.

There was also the Varan PMX-80 back in the 80's that was advertised in our local firearms magazine, but it never really made it either.

The Vektor CP1 was a bit of a failure if I recall too.... could fire if dropped.

Let's rephrase that. Vektor was a failure.

Yes, the CP1's had issues, and I believe they were going to be sued in a class action suite in the US.

Vektor also apparently had an under-the-table agreement with Beretta allowing them to produce the Z-88 for local use only during the apartheid years. When they started marketing it internationally I believe Beretta also threatened a law suite.

They decided it was easier (cheaper?) to close the company down.

If my memory serves me right, they were recalled soon after production started. Some were sold on the open market before the recall. I remember having a few shots with one at a competition in the early 80's. I think it was the 1st local prodeced handgun.

Wasn't vektor going to call them the SP1 and SP2? Or is that something else?

No, that was probably the Varan PMX-80. It was advertised in Man Magnum back in 1981 or so.

SP1 and SP2 were closed slide versions. The grip was more contoured, but the basic mechanism was identical.

An improved Z-88 I guess ;)

I just checked on WorldGuns...it seems those (SP1 and 2) are still being sold for export? Or is that guys info old?

AFAIK Vektor no longer operates. I had to order my LM5 and add my name to a waiting list. They ran a small batch for the police, and added our order to this production run.

RAP-401 looks sorta like a sig 220

It's ultimate success was in being used by the woman dressed up in the long socks, high heels and mini skirt in the opening sequence in the parking garage in the movie Transporter 2. :)

Girls and guns FTW!!

It's actually a nice little pistol, and it sits well in your hand. I was considering buying one as a backup before they disappeared off the market.

Man, I almost forgot about this little gem.

It was initially produced locally here in Pinetown by the now defunct Aserma as the Aserma ADP (which stood for Alex Du Plessis - the name of the designer).

I thought this thing had died a well deserved death until I saw it resurface in the US, having now been reborn as the Advanced Defensive Pistol.

Is that meant to be dubbing or someone severely extracting the urine... Sounds like someone has sat in a broom closet with the microphone off a child's toy.
