She is a Gunner!

Heres the stuff I got sent from an ex-603 (RAF aux Regiment) friend of mine.

Applicants should be UK citizens, male or female between the ages of 17 and 6 months and 50. No previous experience is necessary as full training will be given. Ex-servicemen and women can also apply.

So there we have it. Females are banned from main line full time regiment but can join an auxillary unit. The mind boggles.
(Women are not allowed in roles that 'close in and kill the enemy', unless its week ends or one night a week ?!?)

Sorry forgot the link.

"Women are not allowed in roles that 'close in and kill the enemy', unless its week ends or one night a week ?!?"

they'll be in suppport roles, such as medics, cooks, clerks etc etc

not as front line "gunners" (well as front line as the short range desert group gets)

Are RAF Regiment units considered "close in and kill" type units? Seems to be they're more like the USAF SP's - REMFs with guns.

I'd think the RMPs would be more of a dangerous job in wartime than the RAF Regiment, and women are allowed to be RMPs, right?

Fair enough then, all walt hunting regalia hidden back in the closet. Thinking about it Hellfish is right, they have primarily a defensive role (despite what they may say...) away from the front lines so why not allow women to join.

The girls in The Royal Auxillary Air Force Regiment under go exactly the same training as their male counter parts- I must admit they are as much as good and bad as the guys.
They tend to carry out Sqn HQ duties mainly signallers but as a rule not mixing it with the enemy.
The Regiment as awhole might not be considered a front line unit but where on the war on terror is the front line.
During GW1 (Op Granby) Regiment units were the amongst the first troops across the line doing NBC Recce and Support Helicopter work etc etc

TSW (tactical supply wing) (RAF) in Granby were out there resupplying the unimogs for the SAS 4 weeks before combat operations commenced off the back off their 4 tonners and also setting up forward refueling stations (soft bladders of fuel that were then covered with hessian and some sand, to be used as and when needed by helicopters supporting SF units)

I know this because there is a copper with TVP who wears a couple of military medals on his police dress uniform, and he earnt them the hard way in GW 1 doing some really hairy stuff. (great bloke, am still trying to scab some of his piccies off him to post!)

No.

The RAF Regiment are trained as infantry.

They have both offensive (airfield siezure) and defensive (airfield protection) roles. For example, in Basrah their AOR is the desert round the airport - into the suburbs or Basrah itself.

I have seen female RAF personnel from our local airbase wearing RAF Regt. mudguards on DPMs, I suspect they are members of the RAuxAF, but am not 100% sure. Perhaps our resident Rockape can confirm one way or t'other.

Yes, women are allowed to join the RAuxAF Regiment. Confined to roles such as drivers, stores, sigs etc. In my experience they put in 100% (probably to prove themselves in a male dominated environment) and are good at what they do.
DW58 no doubt the ones you have seen are from 2622 sqn, and by the way...they have some cuties there!!!! (or at least they did!!p-))

The Aux. No1 uniform is identifiable with a letter A on the sleeve, upper arm.
it used to be easier to i.d. "auggies" with the old slides which also had an A (or even LAC,SAC propellers) to show their status, but now with the mudguards, there is no way to distinguish from regulars (unless female, of course)
These auggies arn't as bad as you would expect, some of them have completed several tours of the latest hotspots attached to their local regular field squadrons.

RAFREGT - that was quick, thanks for your input.

Actually you are spot on, I saw a decidely bonksome young wench in CS95 the other day, certainly brightened up my trip around Tescos. She was sporting The Burghead Bull TRF.

I can't argue with that good bunch of lads, worked with them on several occasions. Would love to see some pics. If I'm not mistaken in the book Bravo Two Zero you can see some of those guys from TSW refuelling a Chinny
