First Roman Catholic church built in Minsk (Belarusī) since Bolshevik coup
http://naviny.by/media/2007.07/God_house200.jpgA Roman Catholic church is being built in Minsk, the first such construction project in the Belarusian capital city since the Bolshevik coup in 1917.
The church is being constructed in the Serabranka neighborhood by the John the Baptist community with funds raised from its members and foreign donations.
The city executive committee permitted the community to start the construction this past spring.
The works began on June 15. The initial construction work involving the laying of the foundations and the connection of utility supplies is expected to be completed this year. The walls are to be built next year.
Ihar Lashuk, priest of the Roman Catholic community, told BelaPAN that more than 200 million rubels had been spent on the project estimates and initial construction work.
He said that the community would appeal to authorities to exempt the construction from taxes, noting that this was the only help that they seemed to be able to render.
The church, designed by Minsk-based architect Alyaksey Yaromanka, will have 360 seats. It will be 46 meters tall. The building is being erected nearby a chapel whose construction also was initiated Br. Mr. Lashuk.

Maybe instead of wasting money on churches they should build some positive infrastructures. Maybe something that gives decent paying jobs to people.

Well it was time. As far i know there is already a synagogue and a mosque in Minsk, so now it's completed. Will the next step be a buddhist temple.

Roman Catholic's are the second largest religion in Belarus, I would guess there will be many more.
And rightly so as far as i'm concerned. Although I'd imagine they would be largely confined to the Polish minority in the far West of the country.

Well it's not a government initiative. Private and Foreign donations from what the article says.

Doesn't really matter where the money is from, it's still a waste.

Doesn't really matter where the money is from, it's still a waste.
Why is that? Because some people feel the need to worship their God?
Actually, I'll rephrase that:
Is it a waste because you don't follow the beliefs the building promotes?
For the matter, it's not the job of the Catholic Church to give people jobs, at least the ones you're referring to. They're more interested in spreading their message.

You don't need a church to worship god but you need jobs to eat. The only people this benefits is the Catholic Church not the people living in the area. I would say the same if it was a Mosque or Jewish Temple. There is a ton the people of Belarus need and another church isn't one of them.

Who will build the church?
God?
I think the local construction workers are happy to have a job with this project.

Who says there has to be a church in the first place? You don't need a church to believe in god. Something more permanent then a few months building a church should be in order. If people are already donating money why not use it for something useful and positive that everyone can use.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the church is important in to the Catholics. That's where they have their Mass, Confession, Communion, etc. etc. etc. If I'm not mistaken, you can't do those things in the living room. Those things are important in the Catholic faith, though not as much so in other Christian groups. For example, the average Evangelical group could hold a service in somebody's kitchen.
People feel strongly about building a church there. For one, it's symbolic, being the first church of its kind to have been built there in quite a while. Those that donate probably feel there's a genuine need within the local Catholic population, seeing as they haven't exactly been able to worship freely until recently.
And you're missing the point. The Catholic Church is not interested in giving jobs. The Catholic Church is focused on their God, not the things of this world. That includes jobs. If they begin to see building a Home Depot in every town and city as their responsibility, more power to them, but right now they don't.
Again: why are you so against them building a church? 'The money should be used for another purpose' is not a valid answer, since it's privately funded and not the government's money. Those investors have a right to place their money into whatever they wish. That's what they've done. I take it you also have a problem with those that have donated to help build a local park, since the park provides no jobs whatsoever?
I have a feeling that GromGrad has problem with this church only because it's Roman Catholic.
Let me quote him

So basically he hates any other church than russian orthodox.

AS i said there are 8 catholic churches already but another church of ANY kind Catholic, Russian Orthodox, whatever is a giant waste of money for a people who need a lot more then a useless box with a bunch of idiots who think they know the answers to the world's biggest questions. and not only that but a useless box only a fraction of the population can use. If you have been to Belarus you would know how much they could use that money in other places. You need the church to have Church services, not be a Christian. You believe in jesus, you follow the ten commandments, you avoid the 7 deadly sins and thats all you need. The whole idea that you need to go to a building to be close to god is absurd and basically a giant scam.
A park is a lot more useful on the jobs side alone. You need park rangers you need grounds keepers. Musicians have a place to perform for the crowds, the ice cream man has a place to distribute his wares, etc etc.
On the other hand you got the church which is a international organization which just drains funds from the local population.
It's a no brainer for people with Brains.

Religious worship is a form of community affirmation. Churches are simply a place for a community to join in that affirmation. If a community chooses to build a church, its thier choice.
with a bunch of idiots who think they know the answers to the world's biggest questions

because it's their money and they decided that building a church was a thing that they wanted to help do. if you think other things are needed put your money where your mouth is and do something, other than bitching about it on the internet.

Ihar is Igor in Belorussian, Lasshuik is a Belorussian name. I'm from Minsk originally, next to the Goverment house we have a beautiful old catholic church. There are quite a bit Polish people live in Belarus and it was part of Rechpospolita back in the day. My home room teach was Polish. It's really not a big deal. Western Belarus has bunch of old catholic castels in need of restoration tough.

No, for the matter, you don't need a church to be a Christian (unless you're Catholic).
According to Wikipedia, there were around 1,780,000 people in the city as of 2006. I'm willing to bet that a large percentage of that is Catholic. And you're telling me eight churches, most of whom are probably a good distance away from people (not able to walk to [realistically], anyway), are enough? That's one fun ratio, even if only 10% of the city was Catholic and attended church regularly.
And for the matter, the church doesn't 'drain funds' from the local population. They don't have taxes that they lay on them, they don't go door-to-door forcing people to give money, and I'm pretty sure they're a non-profit organization. People donate to them, but people donate to schools and parks and other public places as well.
Why do you have such a problem with what others do with their money? There are less than 1,000 Muslims in the area where I live, and yet I didn't raise a finger when people donated to build a mosque in the area. I'm sure that was a big mistake, giving them a place to worship, wasn't it?
For the matter, let's just abolish religion. It's the opium of the masses, remember?
