Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski has sacked his deputy, raising the prospect of an early general election.
Mr Kaczynski sacked Andrzej Lepper, who leads a junior coalition party, after his name was linked to a major corruption case involving bribes.
Hours later, Mr Lepper withdrew his Self Defence party from government.
Mr Kaczynski told a news conference that an early election might be the only solution to the political crisis.
"The aggression of the opposition makes it impossible to have a minority government", Mr Kaczynski said.
An election could be held in the autumn, two years ahead of schedule.
Self Defence has 46 deputies in the 460-seat Sejm, the lower house of the parliament. Without them, the government can count on the support of only 203 deputies - far short of the 231 needed for a majority.
Soon after the prime minister spoke, the second biggest opposition party, the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), said it would seek a vote of no confidence in the government to force a snap election.
Wojciech Olejniczak, the leader of the SLD, said it would submit the motion to parliament on Tuesday.
Mr Kaczynski sacked Mr Lepper over a major corruption inquiry.
"The decision is based on facts revealed by the Central Anti-Corruption Office regarding large-scale corruption," the prime minister's spokesman said.
Mr Lepper has insisted he is innocent.
Mr Lepper was also sacked from the government last year in a dispute over the budget - but his party was welcomed back later to shore up the coalition.
Everyone pray this happens ASAP!!!

Whatever means what? PiS, LPR and maybe Martians? Or maybe PiS with Rydzyk and his henchmen?
There's no real alternative today. I wish they all could be in power a little bit longer so they could show how incompetent they really are. In the end none of the coalition parties would get enogh support to win parliament seats.
That's what typical foreigner thinks :)

Do we really need to discuss this on this forum, where the whole world read this? For example only Poles know "inside" political situation and Lepper...
I am happy that this peasant has gone, but I wish(and I will vote) to see PiS in power :)
Cholera człowiek chce odpocząć na forum, ale nawet tutaj widze że będzie kłótnia PiS vs. X partia...

As long as it's going on in English there's nothing wrong I think. There were several different discussions about some countries internal politics on mp.net and noone complained.

Mr Kaczynski sacked Andrzej Lepper
I am glad that clown Lepper got kicked out, that guy is a complete idiot. BTW in my opinion if new elections are held I believe the Twins will retain power, although the both of them are wacky I still rather have them then the ex communists.

PM sacks Andrzej Lepper, early elections on tap
Warsaw, Poland July 10, 2007
Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski (PiS) sacked Agriculture Minister and leader of junior coalition partner Samoobrona, Andrzej Lepper, late Monday amid a corruption investigation.
The move is highly likely to lead to Parliamentary elections.
The governing coalition has 233 seats in the 460-member lower house of Parliament, the Sejm. The ruling Law & Justice (PiS) governs with the help of 55 Samoobrona MPs.
"This case centers on a big bribe," PM Kaczynski told a news conference after a crisis meeting of his party. "Mr. Lepper is in the circle of suspicion."
Lepper denied any connection to the investigation of bribery in exchange for the reclassification of agricultural lands to prepare them for development, a function for the which the Agriculture Ministry is responsible.
The Prime Minister, however, appeared on TV and announced that Lepper could be considered a suspect in the investigation. The investigation by the Central Anti-corruption Bureau (CBA) centers around a bribe rumored to be around PLN 3 mln for reclassifying 35 hectares of land in Mragowo (in Poland's lake district) as property for development. Two people tied to Samoobrona have already been arrested.
Samoobrona party members rallied behind their leader and announced that the party is leaving the coalition. An evening meeting of party leadership elected to leave the coalition. "We are not going to participate in such a Government," Lepper said. "I will not return to this Government."
The Prime Minister has apparently concluded that this would be a good time for elections. His party maintains a strong position in the polls, he was recently criticized by controversial priest Father Tadeusz Rydzyk (see related story) who greatly influences a large portion of PiS' electorate and the Government is facing increasing protests over wages from doctors, nurses, coal miners and railway workers.
"A minority government would be completely ineffective," Kaczynski said. "I am not afraid of elections."
In the campaign, PiS is likely to continue its focus on the pledge to root out corruption in Poland.
SLD to submit motion to dissolve Parliament
Warsaw, Poland July 10, 2007
Left-wing opposition party SLD will submit a motion for dissolution of Parliament and a move to early elections, the leader of the SLD told a news briefing late Monday.
The announcement follows the late Monday dismissal of deputy PM and Agriculture Minister Andrzej Lepper, who leads junior coalition party Samoobrona. The dismissal has been justified with reference to an ongoing bribery investigation.
The departure of Samoobrona from the coalition will deprive the Government of its majority in the lower house, the Sejm.
And the most interesting part of current events in Poland:
Fr. Rydzyk calls President a "fraudster" and first lady a "witch"
Warsaw, Poland July 10, 2007
Influential and controversial priest Fr. Tadeusz Rydzyk, who runs the Radio Maryja radio network, branded President Lech Kaczynski a "fraudster" who is in the pocket of the "Jewish lobby" and described Poland's first lady as a "witch" according to the respected newsweekly Wprost.
The magazine claims it has a recording of Fr. Rydzyk at a closed door conference in the city of Torun. In it, Rydzyk rails against the President for caving to pressure from Jewish groups seeking compensation for property seized by the former communist regime. He also calls the President's wife, Maria Kaczynska, a "witch" for her stance not to support a constitutional amendment further restricting abortion in Poland. [Poland already has some of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe - ed.].
Rydzyk accuses Wprost of misquoting him and taking his words out of context and called the article a "provocation."
President Kaczynski did not comment, but a spokesman said, "If this recording is genuine, it's absolutely scandalous."
Radio Marya claims it has more than 2 million regular listeners, who are staunchly catholic and generally conservative. The ruling Law & Justice (PiS) of which Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his twin brother, the President, have long courted the station's listeners even while distancing themselves from Rydzyk's rhetoric. Rydzyk has been accused of xenophobia and anti-semitism in the past.
The national Prosecutor has announced that the tape will be reviewed for authenticity and Rydzyk could be charges as, under Polish law, offending the president is a crime.

Kaczynski brothers are not very gracefull but very effective politicians and that infuriates the opposition.

The twins love to clown around from time to time, other then that they're pretty effective politicians. The party that they lead is the most popular and has been for some time, I don't agree with their use of tactics but they do get the job done.

true, more than often
other then that they're pretty effective politicians.
Will you share with us the areas in which they are effective? I see none. .
The party that they lead is the most popular
not true, all polls in about a year show PO party higher ranked
and has been for some time, I don't agree with their use of tactics but they do get the job done.
Again, what job? They had accomplished NOTHING they were talking about in the election campaign.

I disagree most of the polls I have seen gives PIS largest share of approval.
Again, what job? They had accomplished NOTHING they were talking about in the election campaign.
Again I disagree, slow start but overall so far they have done more for Poland then the post communists have done. We are much better off in terms of economics and for the first time we now have the lowest unemployment rate that we have had for a long time 12.4%, EU measures it at 10.2% it will be below signle digits. Our GDP growth rate topped 7% first quarter of 2007, we have low inflation and a strong internal consumption as well as exports that will continue to drive this economy.
The Twins are looking out for our interest within the EU, they managed to push back the voting system to 2017 and won an inclusion of mechanizm within the treaty similar to Ionian compromise. So I am actually glad that now we finally have politician that will fight for our rights within the EU, i am sick of having our politicians selling us out and letting countries from abroad do whatever they want. They're not letting US trump all over us either, our tropps in Iraq and Afghanistan are conditional on how much aid we receive from US were not there for free it's a beneficial arrangement. The anti missle system that were negotiating with US that will be placed on our soil has to be beneficial to us as well.
My overall impression of the Twins so far is good, I don't care that they act agressive in fact I like their agressive tactics because they're working.
They have done more in 1 year then the post communists have done for us in a decade.

We've got one of the highest VAT in EU. We should lower PIT to some flat level or lower the brackets. They didn't even touch the KRUS system.
