From Yediot Aharonot newspaper:

Shayetet 13 "drowned" Sayeret Matkal
By Yossi Yehoshua

After five years of absence, Sayeret Matkal returned yesterday to the IDF championship of combat fitness for the chief of general staff's cup- with a firm intent to take the cup from her eternal rival- Shayetet 13.
However this year for the fourth time in a row, S'13 took the championship- while leaving Sayeret Matkal at second place.
Shaldag was at third place in the SF league of the championship, which is also known in the IDF as the "death league", and YAMAM- in fourth place.
This year the competition, which continued all week, saw strong confrontations between the units. Strong allegations were made by the rivals over the preparations made by S'13 fighters for a long period leading up to the competition, despite restriction orderd by the headquarters of the land forces branch.
"the event deviated from been a sportsman-like event a long time ago" said officers in elite units. "The commanders had lost all proportions, and instead of going on another mission, they rather have the unit use the time to traine for the competition."
In the elite units it was also claimed that S'13 men had patroled the navigation forest and studied it before the competition.
S'13 firmly rejected the claimes. "Even to lose must be done respectfully". We even beat Sayeret Matkal in navigation- and that's like them beating us in diving" said yesterday a senior officer in S'13.
This year, for the first time, fighting women took part, and performed the same tasks as the men only with some special dispensations.
First place took women fighters from MAGAV, in second place were women fighters from the Caracal regiment, at third place- NBC women fighters, at fourth place- AA women fighters.
In another interesting league, infantry corps brigades, Golani brigade won, second year in a row, over the Paratroopers, Givati and Nahal brigades.
The commander of the Golani brigade, Colonel Erez Zukerman, also brought much honor to the brigade when he won over his fellow regimental commanders in the commanders running contest.
A great accomplishment was made by the navy, which for a second time in a row three of its units have came to take first place in the leagues of the competition: S'13 (SF units), flotilla 3 (motorized array) and the apprentices of the naval officers course (training camps).
"The IDF has been painted white for a second time", that's how the commander of the school for combat fitness at the Wingate Institute, lieutenant colonel Ashi Almog defined the achievements of the navy.

Good luck!

This is the easy part - then you have a psychologist, some tests...and in case you pass all that, then you are really "screwed" - you have a looooooooooong way ahead of you.

Ever ran from Atlit to Haifa bay as a short morning warm up? ;)

Hehehe yeah i heard the stories.. i understand i will have a march from atlit to haifa with 10kilos on my back.. weeeeee how fun  (16km? and we have 8kms too)

lucky i live in haifa so i run in the same beach they run... so i know the feeling (and i hate to run on that sand hehe)

but hey im going to the gadna(already did the tests) so it means i will also dive and get 2 stars and it costs only 400nins and not 2000nins... so its worth it...

and if i wont pass it i will still have yom sayarot and alot more time to get into fitness

i just want to finish the gibush really

10kilos? rofl rofl rofl rofl

40 makes more sence...

"Run Forrest, run!"

You know, it's not just the running part...its the "lets go swimming" at 03:00 when its winter time...hehe...

No doubt its a one time experience - make sure you enjoy every minute of it, cause you might do things you will never have a chance to do else where. (such as paying a visit to one's family ;) )

Mate, getting used to some "permanent" extra weight on your back isn't all that bad. Been humping around with a permanent backpack @ 20k's for two months now in preperation for something here at home, and only took a week or so before my legs and back didn't mind it any more...
Do it gradually and you'll be humping 40k+ packs around before you know it! ;)

Well, even if he will have good news, he certainly will not come here with them. S'13 is a secret unit.

Met a guy who had been in S13 and he told me that the training so difficult some recruits went a little "mad".

One particular exercise apparantly involved swimming/diving in a tank blindfolded full of crabs to see how long you cold stay in there

All i can say is enjoy....

How long is the overall training of S'13, I think just BUD/s is like 26 weeks long and then they have more traning after that.

During the race. On the left with the gray t-shirts is an entire team from S'13, who eventually finished the race first.

Training: 20 months of basically everything from novice open field infantry combat to advanced sea-to-land incursions.

Training

S'13 training course lasts one year and eight months (like in most other IDF SF units) and is considered to be the hardest one in Israel (both comparing to the IDF SF units and to the Israeli civilian special units). this extreme training regime is the main reason for the big dropout rate in S'13 (mostly because of injuries) that brought S'13 to embrace a different selection method.

Selection

Most Israeli SF units begin their training course with one 20-25 man team and in the end of training course the team contains 10-12 man. S'13, however, begin its training with 80-100 men and ended it with small team of 10-12 man. this different selection system is mainly done because of large amount of injuries in S'13 rigorous training regime (especially due to the maritime environment and diving hazards), and also allowing S'13 to have much more freedom in hand picking the very best out of the new recruits. ironically, since S'13 needs to start its training with larger number of man then any other SF unit, the Gibush (a four day selection phase prior to acceptance into the unit) is relatively easy, with 30-40 percent passing out of the man who started the Gibush. in most other SF units the main focus in the Gibush is team work. in S'13 Gibush, however, a big emphasis is placed on the ability to perform alone under pressure, because when the soldier is diving underwater he is his own commander without anyone else for guidance or emotional support.

People make a big deal about the Physical aspects of SOF selections...In turth thats the easiest part to pass. Its the psycological selection that eliminates most candidates. They need to be dedicated, calculated, professional, mature and be able to stay on mission no matter what.

This Israeli SF competition reminds me of the USMC Supersquad competition (don't know if they still exist). Anyway, the best grunts from the infantry regiments would be selected to train for months to compete against against other regiments. Obviously, after this training, the selected marines were superb in all aspects of fireteam and squad tactics. The only problem was, the rest of the grunts from the regiment were receiving the same **** training as always. Were it that all grunts received the same training the Supersquad Marines received.
