hi res: http://www.af.mil/media/photodb/photos/040504-F-8584G-010.jpg
the caption reads:
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Airman 1st Class Steven Israel takes cover from opposing forces during the security forces tactics competition for Guardian Challenge here May 4. Guardian Challenge, the world's premier space and missile competition, is an annual four-day event. It tests the wartime readiness of Air Force Space Command's Airmen in spacelift, ICBM operations, communications, maintenance, helicopter operations, security forces and food preparation. Airman Israel is assigned to the 21st Space Wing at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Edmund Gibbons III)
any ideas about this new pattern. looks like their new tigerstripe except in desert colors that actually works.

The Air Force is testing out Tiger Stripe patterns for use. Their normal variant is dark blue/gray, though I haven't seen this desert version before. In any case, going for Tiger Stripe when digital or dot camo has been shown to be more effective is retarded.

Thats odd because the brass has been adamant that if the USAF needs to use desert or woodland camo (if we go with the blue tiger-stripe) then we will just use whatever the army has, which is the standard woodlands and the three-color desert pattern. They said on many occasions that they aren't developing variants of the tiger-stripe pattern for other types of terrain.
This totally contradicts what they have also been saying, that they will accept feedback from the AF and base their decision for implemtening the new pattern on that. This picture shows that they basically have picked the pattern anyway and are now modifying it for other uses. If the pattern isnt definite yet then why spend more money testing it with other colors in different environments?
Since I will probably have to wear whatever uniform they decide I will arbitrarily throw my 2 cents in: lets go with a CADPAT/MARPAT variation, with our own logo and color designs. It seems like the Army is going to use that style anyway, let's continue the theme. That or give us Navy-style utilities, cause I feel like a poser wearing camo and sitting in an office all day.
BTW my avatar is just a joke, blue tiger stripe= bad. However I have seen the tiger stripe desert pattern before on websites that sell military bdus. Its from a company called "Tiger Stripe Products" who also were commissioned to create the AF pattern (go figure), and have many other color styles available for the tiger stripe motif.

These tiger strip paterns have been around for some time. Lots of guys are using them all over the US. This is nothing new. The AF is not inventing anything. They are looking to adopt an existing camo available in several colors.
Here is a link to the company that has been making them for years.
http://www.tspcamo.com/sys-tmpl/patternsamples/
Here is what they have posted on the web site.
TIGER STRIPE PRODUCTS: U.S. Air Force Tiger Stripe
We have had numerous inquires regarding the U.S. Air Force's new Tiger Stripe pattern. Yes, we developed the entire pattern project for the U.S. Air Force. We apologize to our customers if we have seemed somewhat occupied for the past year and a half.
The coloration is probably the most striking aspect of this pattern. Air Force command desired a distinctive blend of colors that said "U.S. Air Force". These colors were not specifically selected to work as camouflage.
If more traditional camouflage colors were required by the Air Force for specific units, we could easily provide them for wooded, desert, and urban areas.
Fabric is not currently available to the general commercial market. Companies and Government contractors receiving matching equipment requests from U.S. Air Force personnel, please contact us.
Thank you,
Tiger Stripe Products
Here is a pic of a Bud in the US from three years ago in the DTS BDU's.

Could it be as simple as the article got it wrong and put the wrong image with article? Or maybe Airman 1st Class Steven Israel was the one playing opfor?

I woudn't be surprised, the caption says he's taking cover - which he's clearly not. ;)

it all depends on what desert your in....us 6 desert did fine in the the US southwest where the desert is rockier and has darker sand and rock in spots....didnt do so well in the iraqi desert...the tiger strip seems to have worked in astan...but it looks like 6 color would have worked well there too....jungle is jungle...its all brown and green....but deserts are different...some are rocky some are sand it all depends on where you are
