'I was put in a gas chamber,' says Israeli doctor

US airport security check leaves Dr Dorit Zilberman distraught, after reportedly being humiliated only because of her nationality. 'My family perished in Europe's gas chambers, I never thought 65 years later I would be marked, isolated, and put in a gas chamber'

Itamar Eichner
An Israeli doctor who underwent tight security checks at San Francisco International claims that she was humiliated only because of her nationality.

Dr Dorit Zilberman, a senior urologist at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer who was visiting the United States for the first time for a professional conference, claimed that airport security officials led her to what she called a sort of "gas chamber", where she was sprayed with a strong current of air for two minutes, which caused her great pain

Zilberman filed a complaint with the Foreign Ministry on the matter, and sources at the ministry said they would discuss the subject with the Americans, while adding that the number of Israeli complaints of treatment at American airports has recently been on the rise.

After her handbag passed the standard airport screening, Zilberman was told she had to undergo further security checks and was asked to step aside.

"They took me aside, examined me scrupulously. It was a pretty humiliating situation," Zilberman wrote in her complaint.

The doctor claimed that once she presented her Israeli passport she was told to walk on a different path than the other passengers. "It was a dead end path that led to a kind of corner," she told Ynet.
"I thought I misheard the instructions and I tried to retrace my steps, another woman from the security crew ordered me to stop in a tone as if she was talking to a retard. She told me 'You don't understand, it says here that you should stop and wait for a crew member to approach you.'"

'I have never experienced such humiliation'
Zilberman then asked another crew member why this was being done to her, and if it was because she was Israeli. The crew member simply answered, "I don't know."
Zilberman said she was then lead to a sealed chamber and asked to get in, she was told that she would feel "a flow like in the shower".

"When I walked in, barrages of compressed gas - probably air - were fired at me. Since I am thin, it was very painful. I was then taken out of that 'gas chamber' and taken to another corner where I was asked to take off my shoes, my hand bag was taken from me and my belongings were taken out one by one and scanned along with my shoes in special paper for tracing dangerous substances.
"At that point I started to cry and told the man that in my country I am a respected doctor, and that I had never experienced such a chain of humiliations. He told me that if I didn’t like it, I could call the supervisor."

Zilberman said that in all the countries she had visited, she had never experienced such humiliation just because she was Israeli.
"My family perished in the gas chambers in Europe. I never believed that 65 years later, I would be marked, isolated and taken into a gas chamber."

An examination by Yedioth Ahronoth reporter Aryeh Egozi showed that the so-called "gas chamber" Zilberman spoke of is meant to track traces of explosive materials on passengers' clothing.
Air currents meant to release particles of explosives are sprayed at the passenger, and sensors in the chamber examine these particles.
The examination method was authorized by all relevant bodies in the United States and poses no damage whatsoever to the examinee. European airport authorities are considering applying a similar search method as well.

Woah woah this article only mentions in pasing that israelis are complaining about treatment in american airports in larger numbers in the past. Which given tightened security I assure you everyone is complaining more about treatment in airports. So far as I can tell there is no case to be made from the treatment of one old Dr. that israelis are being target by security.

Oh and zomg i went through an explosives detector in Rome 2 years ago they must be targeting Americans!!!!!1!!!!111 evil italians!!!!!

On, the contrary, the fact that they picked a little old lady for the screening means that it was a random act. Besides, though I have never been to Israel, I have heard from people that have, that everybody else's screening procedures are kindergarten when compared to theirs, and if you have dark skin it is even worse.

Someone needs to HTFU.

It´s like that diplomat who went mental, because he had to remove his shoes in the Australian airport. People need to understand that airport security is not out to get you, they are there to ensure that you will reach your destination in one piece.

I'm interested in the compressed air chamber. Maybe they thought the Israeli doctor had the bends...

Seriously, I always get flagged as a security risk (wont say how they flag me) and get put through the ringer - because im a single man, who often pays cash and travels one way (through last minute trips and open ended agendas). But I've never had the compressed air chamber, and I've travelled in and out of the USA a fair bit. Maybe its a new thing...

That "BULLSH1T" also wreaks of $$$$$. How long do you think it will be before the big lawsuit follows? Which, I'm sure is what this is all about. I've experienced the same "humiliation and pain" when traveling to London and Rome. I remember reading that the Israeli airport wants to switch to the same "gas chamber" because anyone that looks like Habibi gets an extra body cavity searches by Israeli security, and a lot of people complain for the humiliating extra searches as well. So the Gas Chamber is a quic and a less invasive method to make sure no one has firecrackers up their hole.

She reminds of some old farts that always call the local cops S.S. anytime they get a traffic ticket. :cantbeli:

I am actually amazed by TSA - they screen pilots in the same way as passengers. One pilot in front of me once said that if he wanted to hijack a plane this screening would not have stopped him.

^errr....maybe because he is the pilot...? unless he is talking about being a passenger and then hijacking it......

btw, she would have to be paper-thin to be hurt by those barrages of AIR.

What cr@p!

The "good" doctor is a whinger and who ever wrote the article couldn't help but throw the "gas chamber" analogy in there.

I just flew on a dozen flight segments in and out of the US and was subjected to increased scrutiny by TSA while there as well as by NZ authorities on my return.

Why?

I have no idea......maybe it's because of my gender/age/travel history/etc. but I go along with it as the cost of doing business in today's environment.

Current threats are not exclusively terrorist related...they also include threats posed by unknowing idiots who could wreak havoc on a nation's ecology/economy as but one example.

After traveling 30,000+ Ks with two under two kids I have absolutely NO sympathy for the doctor.

I wonder what her opinion is of the very necessary and very comprehensive security screenings performed by her nation's carrier El Al?

Only comeing in does CBP check you, when you leave the country it's just TSA. I work at an good sized international airport and know all the security stuff by heart (I won't say anything about it here) but I know of the "gas chamber" as She calls it. You step into this thing that looks like a normal walk through metal detector and you get a few quick gusts of air. Been through it at some airports,(they actually had everyone go through it) no big deal.

Airport security precautions are getting harder and harder, yet even more stupid and ridiculous. With "everyone from 1 month child to 100 year old lady as a potential terorist threat" and everything from botle of water to a shampoo as an possible explosive device there will soon come the times, when you won't be allowed to take any hand ludgade to the plane, go through security control and X-rays ****, and but all the stuff in the shops after the X rays (sometimes I nearlly feel the conspiracy, I mean, you can't take any water, but you can buy one inside for higher price of cource). The airport security has too much arrogance and powers to ruin any yourney. As for threats, poroblems are far away from solved. An example - any proffesional and determined suicide bomber could bring and detonate his load into a queue at the X-ray or chek-in zones, with crowds of people, equal to those, that could be on the planes. Massive panic and yet even more explosions at the exits-and all thee security measures have gone to hell. And now, we have such events on daily basis, where children, old people etc. are being checked with suspicion. Of cource, one who tries to implement these measures only on muslim people or suspiciouslly looking would soon be called racists, + rights of equality, religion etc., so here we go - bunch of brainwashed have scared are are able to do that every day - the whole air travelers world.

"In the Reid case, there were at least five crew members who later told me they had a suspicious feeling about Reid when he boarded the aircraft. The technology that was supposed to have dealt with the threat failed to do so. The clear conclusion from that is that when you [a terrorist] have to overcome a certain technological screening process, you can find a way to overcome it, but human behavior is where you will fail. Because a person carrying out a major terrorist attack that will probably end his life as well as the lives of many others cannot be in a sane state of mind. Even people who can control their behavior still fail to do so frequently. Crew members thought Reid looked suspicious."

Spare me the drama (gas chamber).
One Israeli had a bad time in a security check in US so what??? What should we do for all those Palestinians that have to go through all kind of stuff in israeli checkpoints in daily basis? Why are Jews complaining about security at an US airport? I am not an expert on these matters but i am pretty sure Jews employ tactics that are 100X worse in Israel when it comes to their secruity.

Jew was led to a room with an air conditioner and all of a sudden that room becomes a gas chamer?

I was telling Sevryn that its not appropriate to say that all jews complain because one complained. You started adding weight to his original statement by providing the quote meaning that you agree that its all jews in general complain basing your judgment on this incident. Even in this thread jews and israelis agreed that its an isolated incident and that such behavior is not condoned.

So if you label large of group of people by a label of one, i' am just curious how do you describe large groups when their actions are pretty evenly split or beliefs divided (ie Americans-democrat/republican)

In case you dont follow this I'm just trying to say that you cant say that all Americans are Republican because you've met one who said he is.
