PARIS, France (*******) -- French police say 20 people died when a coach carrying Polish pilgrims crashed near the southeastern French city of Grenoble.
The coach, carrying 51 Polish nationals returning from a pilgrimage Sunday, was descending a steep incline between Grenoble and La Mure when it smashed through roadside crash barriers, plunged down a ravine and burst into flames.
"There are 20 dead," said a police official who did not give his name. He said the coach's speed and the state of its brakes may have been factors in the accident.
The bus smashed through the crash barrier on the N85 trunk road and plunged down a ravine into the Romanche river, where it burst into flames. An emergency services official said the fire was now out but had no other details.
LCI television reported nine survivors were in a serious condition.
The spot has been the scene of deadly accidents in the past. A Belgian coach crashed near the same spot in July 1973, killing 43 people.
In Warsaw, the PAP news agency reported that a 71-year-old Israeli citizen was killed in a coach crash in southern Poland on Sunday.
PAP said five other people including the dead man's son had been injured in the crash, which happened when one lorry rammed into another which had parked behind the stationary coach.
Most of the coach's passengers were Ukrainians and Poles returning from jobs in Germany and German tourists traveling to the Crimea. E-mail to a friend (http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/07/22/poland.france.reut/index.html#) http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/2.0/mosaic/util/email.gif

At least 20 people have died in a coach crash near the south-eastern city of Grenoble in the French Alps, emergency services have said.

The coach, carrying around 50 Catholic pilgrims from Poland, fell into a ravine while descending a steep incline between Grenoble and Gap.

It broke through the safety barrier, fell 15m (50 ft) onto the banks of a stream, and burst into flames.

The coach was returning from the shrine of Notre-dame-de-la-Salette.

At least 20 people were also injured in the crash, several of them seriously.

A number of people are reported to be missing.

Firefighters said the coach, which came from Poland and was on its way back, appeared to have suffered a problem with its brakes.

It was carrying 49 passengers and two drivers, police said.

The crash occurred near the shrine - a Catholic holy site where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to two children in 1846.

Coaches are prohibited from using the road unless they have a special permit.

a real tragedy-RIP :(
