A major test objective is to verify the fully automatic landing system of the Phoenix. The prototype RLV is 23 feet (6.9 meters) long and hits the scale at 2,640 pounds (1200 kilograms). It has a wingspan of nearly 13 feet (3.8 meters).

The Actual prototype is just under seven metres long, has a weight of 1,200 kilograms and a wingspan of 3.9 metres but is still in alpha stage at Bremen labs of "EADS". The next step will be a flight testing of the Phoenix RLV in Vidsel in Northern Sweden in May 2004.

With the successfully completed taxi tests of PHOENIX, EADS SPACE Transportation achieved another milestone this week: At Lemwerder Airport near Bremen, the prototype of a future space transport system proved its ability to detect and automatically correct track deviations on the ground. The braking system also underwent extensive testing. “We are very satisfied. Testing was successful and we have gained all the results required,” said Peter Kyr, PHOENIX Project Manager, in Bremen after testing had been completed.

It looks like a home workshop project :D . They painted it green, add a C8/ M16 style folding buttstock, with a recoilpad attached on it. Some weaver rail to attach nice toy's like flashllights, 2nd pistolgrip, laser etc.

It don't impress me at all. I saw something like that buid by FN years ago, and also the US did something like this to their Minimi. But it sure looks nice. Seems that every gun in active service are gonna be equipted with extra gear.

May 8 is Lag Ba-Omer Day for Israelis. Israelis light bonfires across the country according to the Jewish tradition Lag Ba-Omer, which marks the end of a plague in the Middle Ages that killed 24,000 disciples of a revered rabbi in the holy land. I suppose the somokeout coincides with lighting the fire.

Cross posted from another forum, I make absolutely no claims of authenticity.

5.56mm, LMG, C9A2.

(1) Collapsible Buttstock (C8 type) With
Hydraulic Buffer System. It is a hydraulic buffer system with an integral plastic collapsible butt similar to the C8. The buttstock will be capable to provide intermittent stops to provide variety of lengths to accommodate eye relief when the gunner is wearing different layers of clothing, tactical vest, or body armour. The hydraulic buffer system was already trialed and it makes the weapon more controllable and accurate. It lowers the rate of fire from 750 to 600 RPMS, which makes the gun more stable to fire and is better when using the C79 scope. The butt will have the ability to fold in causing the C9A2 with the short barrel to be used like a submachine gun.
The new butt is going to be trialed this year.

(ILRLC says: I would very much like to examine this buttstock up close. From what I'm told, the Minimi para uses some kind of hydraulic wizardry that changes the entire operating mechanisim of the weapon. Can ibstolidude provide more details on this? I wonder if the C8 buttstock is of the same nature)

(2) LAD Mount. A dual mount configuration for a
laser-aiming device was trialed. These rails will be used on the forward part of the weapon to mount various ancillary items to support individual operations.

(3) Barrel. New short barrels have to be
procured with a collapsible carrying handle. The short barrel will be for specific ops such as parachuting, FIBUA, and fighting in complex terrain versus a full-length barrel (466mm). It is envisioned that each C9A2 gunner will be issued two short and two long barrels and use depending on the mission in conjunction with an integral Backup Iron Sight.

(ILRLC says: Excellent! Carrying 2 barrels per weapon was just too damn easy, now I have 4 to impale myself on whenever I go down.)

(4) Back-up Iron Sight. An integral back-up
iron sight similar to the old C9 sight will be incorporated to give the firer the option of using the iron sight or the C79 sight.

(5) Plastic Polymer Parts. Green plastic
furniture (pistol grip, butt, carrying handle, C79 optical sight cover, and hand guard). This will be adopted in the future to improve camouflage and concealment. This will be changed to green in color in order to break up the outline of the weapon and reduce the reflectivity of black.

(6) Soft Collapsible Magazine. Quantities of
3000 x 200 round olive drab soft ammo pouches have been bought to replace the plastic belt boxes and are being distributed. It is designed to be more maneuverable and quieter that the standard 200 round plastic ammunition case. It can indicate number of rounds left by sensory feedback. The remaining 1000 pouches for the reserve infantry will be procured through Investment Opportunities. A 100 round olive drab ammo pouch has just been procured for operation. Based on feedback from the soldiers, it will be decided it this will be procured in addition to the 200 round soft ammo pouch

(ILRCL says: Does anyone remember the section from novel BHD, where one of the delta fellows teaches the ranger LMG gunners how to improvise soft ammo pouches to replace their hard boxes? Does anyone actually know how to do this? I'm looking at all you D-boys on this forum (shrek, et al))

(7) Carrying Handle. the barrel will have a
folding carrying handle vice a fixed one in conjunction with the barrel replacement.

( Pistol Grip. An integral pistol grip will
be off the handguard that can fold away and not be in the way of the soft recoil mount or the C9A2 bipod

(ILRLC says: damn good idea, as I mentioned else where, but there are no pictures of this?)

(9) Tactical Slings. Will now be procured in
CADPAT instead of black. This will be a slow phasing in process.

(ILRLC says: I wonder if the sling will be any different.)

I love Rachael Leigh Cook

Thats cause there is only 9000 soldiers, we can afford to make sure they get proper kits, and even that took years to get done. Still not done i should add

Is it just me or does Bremer look dressed down in comparison to the other people in this pic. Dockers and loafers?

The thing with this guy is he is wearing all medals. No ribbons in other words.

If an American soldier wore all his ribbons as medals it would cover quite a bit of area as well.

I don't know anything about Soviet medals so I don't know what they are. Would be interesting to know though. Some of them are pretty distinctive looking and could probably be ID from this pic.

Check out the guy in the blue shirt and sunglasses wearing the "photographers vest" in the background. DEV/GRU or Delta? p-)

Dam I can't type.

He also seems to be wearing a m/35 gymnastiorka and not the m/43 which looks
a bit different. So he probably served already before 1943 that is. The m/43 stayed
in use after the war up until atleast the 70īs in some units.

http://img11.photobucket.com/albums/v33/mustamato/annat/redarmyarty_40.jpg
The M35 gymnastiorka originally was designed after the Russian Civil
War to get away from the hated uniform of the Czar’s Army. The new
Soviet Government found it had to stay with the same materials that the
Czar's Army had to work with, but they devised a system that had no
rank! Later, when it was discovered that rank was necessary in a military
organization, a totally new system of ranks was devised.

http://img11.photobucket.com/albums/v33/mustamato/annat/m43.jpg
The M43 gymnastiorka was basically a return to the Czarist uniform in use
before the Revolution. Stalin had decided to "rehabilitate" it after the disastrous
German invasion.

Neither Adidas, nor Reebok nor Nike: Alpargatas. Alpargatas isnīt a commercial brand, itīs a kind of shoes with the instep made of canvas texture and the sole of "esparto"(like a mat weed, a vegetable fiber), they are light, durable and cheap. They were the typical shoes specially in the mediterranean zones of Spain, because are good for warm and dry weather, but for many many years were the only shoes that poor people could wear in Spain if they didnīt want to go barefoot. Almost everybody here have a pair of alpargatas for summer or going to the beach, now they are fashionable shoes with cool designs, and not so cheaps like 50 years ago. Btw, the honor guard that salutes Zapatero are Mossos dīEsquadra, the police corp of Cataluņa(excuse me, catalanes, I donīt like at all their uniform).

^ ID those rifles!Well... the picture is blurred, so it could be Spanish 7,62mm x 51 NATO FR-8 or 7,62mm x 51 CETME FR-7 (bolt-action Mauser based carbines).

In 1943 Spain adopted the the Mauser 98 rifle as standard for its military. Designated the M43, this rifle was essentially the famous German K98k cham- bored for the 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser) cartridge. Like all such rifles the M43 has the large ring 98-type action and is considered extremely durable.

In September of 1957 the Spanish military adopted their version of the H&K G3-type rifle, the CETME Model 58 in 7.62x51mm, as their standard assault rifle....replacing the older, bolt action M43.

The Model 58, a modern selective-fire rifle, was a major departure from the bolt action M43 Spanish troops had used for so many years, and much training would be required for the successful transition....but there weren't very many CETME's available yet for training during the transition period.

To facilitate rudimentary training for the new Model 58 assault rifle, the Spanish military selected a number of its best early M43 rifles and had them converted to a carbine configuration with some visual features of new M58... this converted carbine is known as the FR-8.

In creating the FR-8, the standard M43 stock was cut to carbine length and equipped with new handguard. A brand new cold-hammer-forged 7.62NATO CETME 58-type barrel was threaded to fit the large ring receiver. Front and rear sights from CETME were added, along with a dummy gas tube under the barrel. This tube was found to be a good place to put the cleaning kit...nice touch. The tube also functions as part of bayonet mount for "look 'n feel" of the real Model 58 CETME during training.

Itīs a Fr8, Remov, because the shape of the handguard. These rifles were almost unknow in the Peninsula for spanish recruits in the time they were used. I read some corps had them like Guardia Civil or some engineers, but they were used mostly in N.Africa, I suppose there would be many of them stored in peninsula for any need. In West Sahara they were widely used by Territorial Police and some saharauis units,
