SICRAL is the first italian system for military satellite telecommunications developed by the SITAB consortium made up of Alenia Spazio (70%), Fiat Avio (20%) and Telespazio (10%).
As prime contractor in the SITAB consortium, Alenia Spazio coordinated the activities of the companies involved in the programme: approximately 150 covering virtually all the Italian space industries.

It also designed, built and integrated the satellite and its various elements – bus, payload and antennas – as well as the telecommunications networks with the radio stations for the Mission Control Centre and Satellite Control Centre.

With responsibility for the system, Alenia Spazio plans and manages the satellite connections connections according to the needs of the different users from the Management and Control Centre in Vigna di Valle.

Launched on February 7, 2001, on an Ariane 4 from the Kourou Space Centre in French Guiana, Sicral is characterised by flexibility of use, low management costs and the ability to adapt to changing operational conditions, especially in emergencies.

The complex Sicral system consists of the satellite, the Management and Control Centre at Vigna di Valle, and over 100 user terminals for ground, sea and air platforms.

Created to meet precise and multiple needs, Sicral has been designed and built as a transmitter able to operate on three frequency bands (multi-payload and multi-transmission), with a repeater for each band:
EHF (20-44 GHz), principally dedicated to infrastructure communications and supported by a tailored receiving antenna capable, above all, of covering Italy; UHF (260-300 MHz), used mainly for tactical mobile communications and covering the entire hemisphere visible to the satellite; SHF (7/8 GHz), the principal band for high-to-medium volume communications, complementary to the EHF but with a multi-beam coverage antenna that can be electronically reconfigured.

The architectural, engineering and technological solutions adopted for Sicral make it an extremely valuable strategic system whose performance and capacity to adapt to even the most difficult conditions has meant that it has been a major player in a number of actions related to recent international events and in some humanitarian missions relative to concluded and on-going was.
The success of the Sicral system has given rise to a follow-on programme that foresees the launch of a Sicral 1 bis in 2005, beginning service in 2006, and a Sicral 2 to be launched in 2010. Alenia Spazio will again be involved in these important developments to give the country greater strength in military information.
