While I know that this is a licensed version of the Galil by the Netherlands, I either kinda forgot or am vague on some info on the weapon...

- Who is/was the licensor involving in handling?

- What were the variants if present?

Een Nederlandse connectie

Behalve dat de Nederlandse strijdkrachten op uitzending regelmatig kalasjnikovs aantreffen in het buitenland, is er nog een andere relatie te vinden tussen het kalasjnikovgeweer en Nederland. Tijdens de Zesdaagse Oorlog in 1967 bemerkten de Israëliërs dat de kalasjnikovs van de tegenstanders een stuk betrouwbaarder waren dan de eigen FAL-geweren. Met name vervuiling door zand vormde een groot probleem voor deze Belgische geweren. Men was zo onder de indruk van de kalasjnikov, dat dit het uitgangspunt werd voor een nieuw geweer dat vanaf 1972 bij het Israëlische leger in gebruik zou worden genomen. In het begin werd geëxperimenteerd met veroverde kalasjnikovs die waren voorzien van lopen in het NAVO-kaliber, en geleidelijk werd van hieruit een nieuw geweer gerealiseerd. Dit geweer was voor de Israel Military Industries (IMI) ontwikkeld door Israel Galili. Het wapen werd dan ook aangeduid als Galil. Ten opzichte van de andere kalasjnikov familieleden, zijn er een paar kenmerkende elementen die typerend zijn voor de Galil. Zo is het wapen door de omhoog gebogen spangreep voor zowel links- en rechtshandige schutters te bedienen. Ook de veiligheidspal is door beide groepen schutters te bedienen doordat de standaard veiligheidspal op de rechterkant van de kast ook vanaf de linkerzijde kan worden gebruikt met de knop op de greep. Aangezien een optionele richtkijker op de linkerkant van de kast wordt gemonteerd, is deze niet voor linkshandige schutters geschikt. Een andere eigenaardigheid vormt de tweepoot. Deze is zodanig ontworpen, dat deze ook kan worden gebruikt als draadkniptang en flesopener. De ervaring had namelijk geleerd dat de Israëlische soldaten in de dorstige omstandigheden hun colaflesjes openmaakten met de patroonhouders van de Uzi, waardoor deze kapot gingen.

Aan het eind van de jaren zeventig vonden er in Meppen (Duitsland) beproevingen plaats van diverse geweren in het nieuwe NAVO-kaliber .223 (5,56 mm). De vervaardiger van de Israëlische versie van de kalasjnikov, wilde graag dat hun geweer ook aan deze beproevingen mocht meedoen, zodat er een afzetmarkt in de NAVO kon worden gemaakt. Probleem was echter, dat Israël geen lid was en dat hun land dus geen geweer naar Meppen mocht opsturen voor deelname. Aangezien de fabrikant IMI al nauwe contacten had met Nederland (Nederland was immers het eerste land dat de Uzi-pistoolmitrailleur had ingevoerd buiten Israël), en Nederland geen eigen wapenindustrie had die een geweer zou aanbieden ontstond er een idee.

Dit idee was, dat er Galilgeweren werden voorzien van een nieuwe typeaanduiding zodat het leek alsof er sprake was van een Nederlands fabrikaat. Aldus geschiedde: de firma NWM De Kruithoorn uit Den Bosch, van oors****g een fabriek voor jachtmunitie, zou dienen als 'fabrikant' en leverde de geweren als geweer MN 1 (Model Nederland 1) aan de beproevingen. 27 exemplaren werden in Meppen aan grondige keuringen onderworpen. Het eindresultaat was niet positief: de Galil werd niet door enig leger aangenomen en kon weer terug naar Israël. Wel zou de firma Rheinmetall die sinds het midden van de jaren zeventig eigenaar was van de NWM De Kruithoorn, aan het begin van de jaren tachtig nog aan een MN 1 Modell2 werken, dat was verbeterd naar aanleiding van de beproevingsresultaten uit de jaren zeventig, maar ook dit ontwerp zou nooit bij enig leger worden ingevoerd. Pretty much the last paragraph. The first is a bit of history of the Galil. The second one tells about NATO weapon tryouts in Meppen, Germany. Israel wanted to promote the Galil in NATO but since it wasn't part of NATO the Galil wasn't allowed to enter the tryout. So they let the NWM produce the rifles under license and those entered the tryout. Galil wasn't accepted by any NATO army and the idea was canned.

I know that the Dutch Army considered the Galil for quite a long time but eventually they went for the Diemaco. I think there are still some Galil's in the Dutch Army ammo depots back from the tryouts.

Looks like they only touched the Galil AR 5.56 version.

The NM-1 was allmost identical to the 5.56x45mm Galil ARM, it had a bipod. According to the picture from the link in the first post it also had carrying handle. No optics were fitted as a standard.

The model 2 may haved looked similar to the Bernardelli VB-SR (but full-size instead of carbine size), but I don't know any specifics.

I've got an old copy of Janes Rifles and Light Machine Guns from 1980 that details the NM-1, unfortunately not with me right now, but the picture of the NM-1 has no carrying handle, and a plastic handguard similar in shape to the Valmet series rifles - there's no bipod. I'm not sure if this is the model 2 or not though.
