View Full Version : What makes us human?

So what makes a human a human? How do we distinguish our consciousness from any other sort? Will there ever be a definition that all people can accept?

Well. We have brains that allow us to sort out emotions and other feelings. We have opposable thumbs.
The closest relative to us humans is the oranguatang. They may not look anything like us, but they have similar behavioural traits.
I believe there are theo nly other mammal besides humans that have *** for pleasure.

Genetically, everyone who might claim to be a human these days should be a homo sapiens. As for consciousness, I don't know. My personal beliefs are Crhistian, but, that said, I know it is not a definition everyone can accept.

Scientists and philosophers are still arguing over this – I doubt any of the silly buggers here have the definitive answer.

It is our extreme ingenius thinking that seperates us from other animals. Only a human could think of such a thing. I mean, its exquisit.

Its not *** that we can distinguish ourselves from them critters. We kill our own for a 1001 reasons. Animals kill for reasons you can count on your fingers.
The ability to invest time and effort into things that don't immediately fullfill our direct desires. For example monkeys can use a stick to get a bannana but humans can do much more. They can plant seeds and wait for it to grow then harvest.
So apart from designing tools and stuff, there ain't really a difference.

And it makes me personally sad to see a Israeli doing this, who is supposed to have learned by history of being treated badly and being persecuted just because of his look, belief, religion or race. :|

Did you read Mustamato posts ? You know he likes to put some fuel in the fire from time to time . He made me ungry more then once. I am not going in my home town , and yelling , burn the gays . It's my way to joke on him . Joke . I don't like this way of life , but there is nothing i can do against it , no ? You basicly saying (even if that's not what you ment) , that i could kill gays just because they are . You noticed , that it's the thing you accusing me ?
Can you find a post where i said , "Burn the gays" ? Or you can find my posts , where i joke on Mustamato , that he is a gay (and i even said , that it's his own bussiness that he is a puff eater ) .
So , next time choose more carefully your thoughts .

It's my way to joke on him . Joke . I don't like this way of life , but there is nothing i can do against it , no ?
As I tried to say, I regret the missing tolerance, which does not implement you have to like gays.
You ever thought about the insulting trace of your "joke" for people, who're really gay (not, I'm not, btw)?
You basicly saying (even if that's not what you ment) , that i could kill gays just because they are . You noticed , that it's the thing you accusing me ?
Need to admit that my way to open your eyes was a bit hazardous and I did not want to personate you as "a homo killer", but don't you see whom you are really offending with your "joke"?
So , next time choose more carefully your thoughts .I'm sick of this statement. Why don't you read my points more carefully so I don't have to fix all your false and arbitrary assumptions?

Great question, Jack. I don't know if we are so special. Everything that we are is either an anomoly-which doesn't necessarily help us to survive-such as insanity (which also occurs in other species)-or something allows us to survive better.
Personally...chimps can speak about 250 words of spoken English, can sign about 2,000 words in ASL, and actually understand what they are saying. So they speak our language.
They are self-aware, they are concious, and they can understand the concept of love. But what is love? Is it anything more than a survival instinct? We love our newborns, so we don't leave them by the side of the road to die. It would seem that all animals who care for their children would have a similar ingrained instinct. So they have our strongest emotions.
Many primate species use tools.
And what about Neandertals? What can we do that they couldn't? Music, language, religion, love to our extent...
And then there's ETI. What about life in other solar systems? Why wouldn't life, if it could, evolve to our point, or beyond it? Logically, at least one place out there probably harbors life with cars and TVs and philosophers.
Basically...I don't know that we're as special as we might think. That's always been my problem with abortion activists from both sides, seems sometimes like an adult chimp is more human than a few cells. And I'm saying that as a father.
I think it's an amazing, awe-inspiring topic to discuss. There's so much to it. Like the stars, it is wonderful in the strictest sense-full of wonder.
Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

So what makes a human a human? How do we distinguish our consciousness from any other sort? Will there ever be a definition that all people can accept?
Well Jack I would have to say that most humans need other humans. Love, family and good health are the most important. As far as consciousness levels are concerned religions, and recently psychology have tried to grade consciousness into levels. Most people are in what I call an animal state. Completely ignorant and reactionary to external stimuli. The next state is someone who has noticed the first state and is trying to work their way out of it. These people are rare. And finally there is some one who is completely independant of the 1st and 2nd states. Kinda like a Budha, Christ, Mohammed or Messiah, though not limited to any of those persons/concepts. I gave my Chaplain a copy of Gurdjieffs, "The Possible Psycology of Mans Evolution." He loved it. It covers a lot of your Questions pertain to. I highly suggest it, its a great book.
