Blast Kills Chechen Leader, Russian Gen.
By SERGEI VENYAVSKY, Associated Press Writer
ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia - A land mine exploded during Victory Day celebrations Sunday in a stadium in the Chechen capital, Grozny, killing Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov and a senior Russian military commander, Chechnya (news - web sites)'s Interior Ministry said.
An official in the Chechen Interior Ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, said at least 10 people were killed and up to 100 injured,
A Chechen Interior Ministry officer said that Kadyrov — the Moscow-backed leader of the rebel region — died of wounds 30 minutes after the explosion, and that Gol. Gen. Valery Baranov, head of the Joint Army Command of the North Caucasus, died at the scene.
The explosion happened underneath a VIP-seating area during a ceremony in the Dynamo stadium that was attended by senior Chechen officials. An Associated Press photographer at the scene said that numerous people were injured.
Russia's NTV television broadcast footage of the seating section collapsing into a jagged hole of torn wooden planks, sending up a plume of brown smoke. Panicked people dressed in their Sunday best clambered over the seating bleachers. One man was shown carrying a bloodied child, while men in uniform dragged a man covered in blood away from the broken seating area. Shots rang out into the air.
Sergei Kozhemyaka, a duty officer at the Emergency Situations Ministry in southern Russia, said the stadium was quickly evacuated. Kozhemyaka said that a second land mine was found near the VIP seats. Russia's Echo of Moscow radio reported that numerous people were detained.
Russia marks the Allied victory over the Nazis every May 9 with military parades and fireworks around the country.
Security was especially tight across Russia. In 2002, a bomb exploded during a Victory Day military parade in the Caspian Sea port of Kaspiisk, killing 43 people, including 12 children.
Russian troops have been fighting Chechen insurgents from much of the last decade. The latest war began in September 1999. Despite superior numbers and fire power, Russian troops have been unable to uproot the rebels from their mountainous hideouts or banish them entirely from Grozny.

Carefull planned, well executed attack. It seams that contrary to what official Moscow says, the Chechnian ''troubles'' are far from over. Sofisticated attack against VIP targets indicates that Checnya has turned into lowintensity longterm conflict just like Northern Irleand.

I'm honestly surprised that the security teams dont actually check where the president is going to make sure someone hasn't put a ****ing landmine underneath his seat.
Unless it was an inside job its so unprofessional its not funny. :bash:
Bandits have killed the gangster... Shame is that the Terek Football Club will suffer most as Kadyrov was his president
Pity that many other people have had to die too. RIP
What about Baranov? Did he survived the blast or not? Media reporting both options... any confirmations or denials aired so far?

14 people die in terror act in Grozny
09.05.2004, 13.38
GROZNY, May 9 (Itar-Tass) - According to preliminary data, 14 people died as a result of a terrorist act on Sunday at the Dynamo stadium in Grozny where Chechen citizens celebrated the V-day, Tass learnt at the Chechen Interior Ministry.
According to preliminary data, 38 people were wounded, including commander of the United Army Group in the North Caucasus Valery Baranov whose foot was torn away by the blast.
The explosion also wounded republican President Akhmat Kadyrov, speaker of the State Council Eli Isayev and Interior Minister Alu Alkhanov.
The explosion thundered at 10.40. The military parade in honour of the V-Day was already over by that time, and a concert started. According to preliminary data, a powerful explosive device had been planted under the stand where republican leaders were.
On the other hand...
MOSCOW (*******) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday the Kremlin-backed Chechen President, Akhmad Kadyrov, was killed by the blast at a stadium in Grozny.
The Kremlin quoted Putin as saying: "Kadyrov passed away on May 9 on the day of our national holiday."
I think that Putin has the reliable infos on the attack... so it looks like Jabba The Hut is dead anyway.

Chechen president killed by bomb
The blast was caused by a landmine, say officials
Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that pro-Moscow Chechen President Ahmad Kadyrov has been killed in a bomb attack in Grozny.
Mr Putin described the Chechen leader as a true hero and said he had proved there was no equality between bandits, terrorists and the people.
President Kadyrov was fatally wounded when a landmine exploded during a ceremony marking victory in WWII.
Earlier, Mr Putin vowed revenge for the attack, in which 14 people died.
A spokesman for Russia's emergency situations ministry said the landmine had gone off in a VIP seating area of the packed Dynamo stadium.
There is uncertainty over the fate of the commander of Russian troops in Chechnya, Gen Valery Baranov, who was also in the stadium at the time.
Officials have denied reports that he was killed by the blast and said he was fighting for his life in hospital.
Panic-stricken
Russian television showed chaotic scenes as panic-stricken spectators ran from the scene and brown smoke rose from the debris of the stand.
One man was seen carrying an injured child to safety, while bursts of gunfire rang out.
Mr Kadyrov died of his injuries in the blast
The emergency ministry spokesman said a second landmine had been found following the evacuation of the stadium.
Suspicion immediately fell on Chechen separatists, who have been fighting for independence from Moscow for more than a decade.
President Putin, speaking at the end of the Victory Day parade in Moscow, said: "There can be no doubt that retribution is inevitable for those whom we are fighting today. It will be unavoidable for terrorists."
Chechen interior ministry officials quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency said at least 14 people had been killed and 20 injured.
Russia has been fighting separatists in Chechnya since the republic first tried to break away in the 1990s.
Moscow has reimposed its rule in Grozny, but rebel attacks have continued, both in Chechnya and elsewhere in Russia.
The BBC's Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says the attack is a massive blow to the Kremlin's attempts to restore order in Chechnya.

All I heard is that Baranov is in critical condition, and he's given 50/50 chance. He lost his left leg, and suffered serious shrapnel wounds.
Possibly, MON-200 AP mine with a radio detonator was used.
Again, this info might not be accurate.

The Su 37?Platypus is not a bomber?
The Su 37 is not called Platypus in the NATO code, Su-32FN/34 or something is the Platypus.
The Su-37 is called "Super-Flanker," though that doesn't really fit the system of that code system.
And there is not a single Sukhoi plane that has been made that cannot carry air to ground weapons as a far as I know. You could easily obliterate that stadium with a couple of Su-27s carrying a few FAB-250s, or PetABS or ZABs or any other A/G ordinance it can actually carry (yet though it may be a problem with the Su-27s originally with the PVO unlike with the original VVS ones which should be configured properly.)
Anyhow I sure hope the idiots responsible for that explosion will be swiftly apprehended and summarily executed. or something similar, that Kadyrov guy seemed a quite nice laddie, with that fur hat at least.

Oh man....
Imagine being a contractor happy to get payed to build some concrete tribune, hiring some workers you've never seen before....
Condolances to the families though. Did anyone see the vid on TV? What were all those shots fired? Sounded like either a very unsecure guard firing with the finger on the trigger or eitersome guns' n ammo that were exploding after the blast?

Apperently the soldiers started firing into the air to get people to lay down on the ground, to get full access to the bombsite and be able to check everyone on the location.

What the fock do you know about Chechnya?
You are sitting there behind a comfort of your monitor and talking **** about things you have no idea of.
Why don't you go there and fight?
Of course, you don't have balls to do that. All you can do is sit here and bitch about the "invaders" killing "civilians"!
Schools, kindergardens, and hospitals are being built all over the country. Grozny University is working after it was shot down during the rule of your beloved fundamentalist scumbags.
"Terek" football club is playing with other teams from all regions of Russia.
Of course, this does not comply with the "Shariat"
You don't know what I personally heard from average Chechen CIVILIANS about what was going on during the rule of Wahabbis! 7,000 people from all over Russia were held hostages all over Chechnya.
I saw a video footage of 17 young Chechens who were decapitated one by one, after they decided to escape from one of the training camps in Dyshne-Vedeno! Those kids were forced, in accordance with the new "decree" which stated that all men ages from 16 to 28 were to mandatory attend fighting courses in their respective "Jamaat"!
The guy who decapitated them was the Afghan named Hazratullah. Guess who killed him? A 15 year old kid who gave an oath to avenge his brother. The guy emptied the whole AK magazine into that focker.
That kid is now the member of the Chechen OMON.
Like I said, you don't know **** about what's going on there! So shut your focking mouth! :bash:
