I have seen a few photo of soldiers and emergencey services filling sandbag using a funnel with a bag at the bottom of it and also and sandbagging machine. So was devices are out there to making sandbagging quicker and easier. Photo's would be great .

1.) Take (or make) a simple wooden table, cut a round hole in the top.

2.) Take a traffic cone, cut off the top inch or so.

3.) Place traffic cone upside down into hole in table, for a makeshift funnel.

4.) Enjoy.

1. your mate holds open the sand bag
2. you take yor e-tool and dig up 1x shovel of sand/earth
3. tip said sand/earth into sand bag
repeat process until bag is 3/4 full, then do the same until you have the required amount of sand bags.

These idears have there merits but end of the day you use what you can carry. Also some of them will only work using sand, having done abit of flood relief before you use what you can, this maybe a pile of clay soil or dirt which wouldnt flow through a funnel and is to heavy.

Having filled thousands of sand bags by hand I'm all for a machine that can spit out filled ones, even better would be if it can then stack, pack and build ****e too, it would be the dream answer to alot of soldiers and civil defence crews

I remember constructing quite a large sanger on my asslt pioneer cse, went the whole 9 yards, blast walls, zig zag entrance, revetted interior. The thinnest point was 4 sand bags deep with minimun 18inch OHP. God only knows how many bags it took.
Once we were done the instr realised he got us to build it in the wrong area, Rather than addmitting his error in front of the other instr's he said that was the practice, "Now guys, disasemble it and rebuild it over there" (150m away)
"Yeah ok corp".... muffled Wanker.

you all have it all wrong, this is the easiest way to get sandbags filled: you simply snap your fingers and say, "privates, fill these sandbags", and then a short time later, depending on the motivation of your joe's, you have filled sandbags. note to reader: rank of e5 or above is preferable with this method

Yes, there is a reason why God gave NCOs Privates.

are there any set way of laying out sandbag to give maxium strength and stability? Like an instruction leaflet on how to do it correctly. Just like a manual for a rifle.

The original poster may wish to check out www.proearthdev.com (http://www.proearthdev.com) . There are others now coming onto the market BCB International have one that it is claimed will fill upto 480 s/bags an hour (I assume with a 3 man crew). They have sold a number to various local authorities in the UK. The SandHopper (of ProEarth Developments) will give you upto 180 s/bags an hr with a 3 man crew. Either system will increase such rates, once the crews have become more adept & proficient in the equipment use.

Maybe the notion of re-establishing a modern version of Civil Defence Corps & get those claiming Job Seekers Allowance to earn a few extra quid, volunteering for such. This could mean in the long term, that you will have a surplus of workers. They will have some good basic training & skill attainment in everything from sandbag filling with such gear. They could also learn other subjects like emergency feeding using improvised field kitchen materials & stoves, light & heavy rescue, first aid & casualty clearing, etc. It also means that the UK could send rather larger numbers of trained specialists to disasters internationally.

And remember to keep the seams to the inside, and pack down well with the shovel I much prefer the hessian bags to the plastic, grip and stack far better.

Now if they could only get rid of the p*ss smell because some are to lazy to walk to the p*ss tube and pee.

We used this method but with two cones per table and sidewalls to keep sand from falling on the guys under the table.

With the propper motivation, you will be living in these tents for a month and may need protection from.... engine blast, ;)

We had three teams of 14 airmen each working about 9 hour shifts of nothing but filling bags we were doing about 3500-4000 in a shift. You can crank out a lot of bags that way to start building revetments and personal protection. At first it did not seem like we were doing much work because as soon as a skid would get filled an 10k would come and take it from us.
