The next most-pilfered article was the olive-coloured military bath towel, of which 2,400 disappeared, said the army in-house newspaper Vaernpliktsnytt.
hehe that's funny, the towel the army gives us is water resistant it sucks.

Hehe. It's a really old joke in the FDF that the only waterproof gear they have is the towel... Guess it's kinda universal :D

Some people really had the "if it ain't nailed to the floor I'll take it"-attitude when I served. Some asshole stole my CVC-helmet when I left it unattended! Can't really understand why people nicked some much stuff, pretty useless stuff as well...

The army stuff is excellent, best clothes I have ever worn on me. Shirts and so forth
is good to have when being outdoors and hiking and so forth, so well, they dissapear.
When loosing something the soldier have to fill in a paper and leave it to the company
officer that is in charge of the cash. There one must write what happened to the stuff
as well. But the nice thing is that the soldier doesn´t have to pay for the stuff. One of
the most popular items to take home is probably the Comtaqs
http://gideongunsales.com/PeltorComtac.JPG
... of which 450 "dissapeared" last year
Btw I didn´t steal anything. Although I have bought some of the stuff in surplus
store afterwards.

Damn, and I thought acquiring that M/90 Hjälmduk was hard when all you had to do is to just steal it and don't even have to pay for it. Too bad I'm not going to the Swedish "Förvarsmakten" to do my service.
That thing just wouldn't do in the FDF, I've heard...
Anyway, what's up with stealing towels and...underpants ? from all the items those things seem to be the least on my list if I'd ever decide to steal anything...
I've got several pieces of the Swedish M/90 clothing and must say that they are really great for the outdoors, plus the camouflage pattern turns heads here.
the military underpants are just great, and also I think for many guys it's just a cool think to keep wearing them.. :)

Interesting discussion here and I gather in any military, there is always stuff that individual soldiers take. I remember I think last year or two years ago (I dont remember excatly), the IDF had a month long “Amnesty’ they called it to where they encouraged to anyone to return military stuff they had taken while in service and for that month if anyone did return anything, nothing would happen to them at all, and indeed a lot did return stuff and it was reported as a big success. What was funny was that after the month there was an article on this and it highlighted some of the major things that soldiers had taken and returned and I kid you not but one of the major things, was some one returned a inflatable raft (Zodiacs)! :D
If any Israelis remembers reading this as well or have a link to this story, I would appreciate you posting it here :D
Anyways as for me, what I never took anything, or rather I don’t recall, or I have no recollection of anything in my possession……yes yes that’s it ;) ;)

I heard a story that happened when a buddy did his service. The officers gave the
soldiers an "amnesty". It was kind of a "razzia" and the soldiers were given the
opportunity to throw out all they had taken illegally from the window of their barracks
before everything was checked. One guy had stolen TNT and put it in a bottle. He
kind of panicked and throw out the bottle from the window. The only problem was that
he had written his own name on the bottle :)
A friends older brother did his military service in Finland, hm 10 years ago or
something like that. But he lived in Sweden, somehow he managed to steal a
handgrenade and get it thru the customs! That was before 11th september 2001,
hm. Imagine the headlines if someone would get caught with a handgrenade
before entering a passenger plane today. He blew it up on a empty field. Don´t
know if the story is true, but his brother is kind of a punk, so it wouldn´t surprise
me at all.

I remember this kid in our unit. Well, to be nice he wasn't very bright. Rumour had it he was to serve as chef or something at the messhall but that his brother, an officer at my old regiment, had pulled some strings for him. On our last exercise this kid stole some explosives, live tank rounds and ****. Word got out and our officers did a "shakedown" at our barracks. Kid throws the stuff from a 3rd storey window almost hitting the regimental CO in the head with a tank round.
All the other platoons were about to go on leave except our platoon and our officers made the whole company stand in attention until someone confessed. I think we had to wait 20 min-half an our before this stupid kid began crying like a baby and confessed...

I was hoping for an article for even though I read it, it seems too hard to believe that I am questioning my memory on that ;) (Even though I know its true ;) )
Anyways thanks for looking for an article.
I personally would love to have “taken” the "camo suits" (http://www.isayeret.com/camo/personal.htm) but........or did I already....gees I cant recall now...yeah that’s it p-) p-)

As I've mentioned in earlier posts, I've been in for over 20+ years and have seen some creative "borrowing".
When I was USAF Military Police (SP) the big thing was flashlights as we needed to have them for morning Guardmount.
The old story was:
Put an SP in a room by himself with two 1/2 ton solid metal balls. Lock the door and then come back in two hours. One of the balls will be broken the other will be stolen. Ask the SP what happened and he'll reply, "I don't know."
The other thing was our survival parkas. Maintenance guys had a habit of walking off with them.
-- As a crew chief on C-5's it was hearing protectors.
--When I went Army, our Platoon Sargent had the tie down hooks on the back of his Humvee stolen. Someone had unscrewed and removed them all!

A Zodiac, that's nothing rofl!
In Norway shortly after WW-2, there was a naval officer who managed to trick away a whole MTB for himself by fraudulent methods for use (after some personal rebuilding) as a private motor yacht. :D

Army officials said they had no idea why so many pairs of underpants went missing in action, but possible explanations included theft, loss and general wear and tear.
What I find bizarre is that the army would want used underpants returned to them.

I don't. That's the military. It's not like they're going to reissue them and more likely they'll probably just going to destroy them, but before that some numpty with a clipboard and waay too much of an opinion of him/her self in the grand scheme of things simply has to count them all, because the regs say so.
I've also seen (never did myself, honest ;) ) some really interesting things go missing over the years, qnd even wierder stuff turn up at amnesty parades and/or surprise inspections of the shacks.
The Brigade Comders Flag I understood, but the flag pole????
