Do you have a firewall? Have you scan your hard drive for virus?
How do you connect to the internet?
Internet ISP---->modem--->router/hub---->computer
or
Internet ISP---->modem--->computer

I have both 98 + 2000 installed on my pc, I used to get online with 98 without any problem , but then I began to start my PC in 2000 mode, connection worked well the first days, but now since yesterday it sucks a lot .
My provider is ok , I checkd it out by going with my laptop online and there was not a problem

Shut off your firewall completely and try it.

He isn't using XP.He is using 2000.I think it toy might want to try this-Go to START-RUn-type cmd-at the DOS prompt type Ipconfig/all tell me if it shows your IP.If not type IP release then type IP renew and wait for it to give you a new IP.Did you install the driver for ure modem?

Go to Start/Run, type in "cmd" then type in "ipconfig/release" unplug modem for ten minutes then plug back in, then type "ipconfig/renew" BAM new IP instantly if it doesnt work first time try it a couple times it'll work.
The best thing for you to do is call your ISP and ask for help.

You can always shut your computer off for a couple days to get a new ip with some ISP's.
try going to start then run... then type in ipconfig / flushdns
then try netsh int ip reset.txt
You should really be talking to your ISP about this, they should be able to ping your computer and figure out why the lag is and who's side its on.
