Work smart

From Economist.com

AMERICANS are hard workers, but not necessarily the most productive, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics. It has compared America's output per worker, and output per hour, with that of other rich countries. The average American worker produced $90,000 of output in 2006, measured at purchasing-power parity. Only Norwegians, some of whom work on oil-rigs, did better. Using output per hour, however, shows a different picture. Employees in Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands and France all churn out more than Americans' $50 an hour. Proof, perhaps, that workers are motivated best by shorter hours and more holidays.

quality versus quantity. All I know is, in France you get paid full lunches, and you don't work that many hours. My dad thought that was crazy. But if it makes things happen, so be it.

Just look at that pampered Eurobastard in the graphic. So clean, so well nourished and rested, with a spiffy multi-colored jumpsuit. "Oh, no more buttered scones for me Mater, I'm off to play the grand piano". Pfft. Look at him...hand-carrying the grille from the Grille Assembly Wing where it is hewn from a massive ingot of solid Norwegian socialicendium, over to the chassis, where it will be lovingly integrated into the rest of some miserable 1-cylindered Opel by a crew of 20 old-world craftsmen who work 2 hours a day in factory made of hardwood and chrome. Meanwhile, in China, an 8 year old orphan spends 16 hours a day in a sewer assembling a car all by himself using only a penny and his own entrails. How long can that go on?

Long enough I hope. I wouldn't like my expensive clothes to get all dirty. What if I start to sweat? That'd be unheard of. I'll leave that sort of business to you uncivilized chaps over in the colonies.

I must admit I was attracted to this thread title, as I sit here at work and ponder whether to knock-off early or stay on to 1600hrs. Productivity is such a subjective concept. I'm thinking I might take my corporate credit card, grab my corporate car and go drink with work associates. Discussing work related issues in a social forum? Nothing new. Such a good idea....I'm off. :)
