I've been compiling a list of military designations, from around the world, mostly for my personal reference, but as to have a quick reference guide of sorts for lesser known designations (like that the HK 23 was designated XM262 by the US) or for designations for a common system across services or countries (like the FN Minimi is the C9 in Canada and a variant of it is the M249 in the US or that the USAF's SUU-23/A gun pod is known in the US Army as the M25).
I was just wondering if people had any ones they knew of that they'd like to share.

Thanks a lot guys, and I'm sure there are more.
Also, isn't a variant of the Sig 551 designated G37 by the Germans? And Digrar, do you know what AI rifle the SR98 is? Is it the L96/AI PM?

Yes, some designations sare missing in that list:

G37 - Sig 551

MP1 - Beretta Mod 38/42
MP3 - Walther MP-L

Is the C7 in service with an L designation too Sabre?
Sabre
03-17-2005, 04:13 PM
Nope. Just the L119A1.
Although by rights the C7 ought to be in service with an L designation in the green army, but that's just my (and many others') opinion. I have heard that the cost of the SA80A2 improvement programme would have paid for the purchase of diemaco weapons and ancils for the entire army three times over.
The MoD really should have paid attention to the choice of UKSF and the majority of NATO armies and opted for the C7 as the new rifle. Apparently, the C7 is the most widely issued rifle in service with NATO.
Having used the L119A1 a bit, I can say that it is a much more ergonomic weapon than the SA80, and far more practical. The MoD should just bite the bullet and purchase C7A2s, C8A2s etc for the green army, RN and RAF.

Does anyone know if M4 and M6 were the official designations for the H&R and Ithaca survival rifles (respectively)?
Also, Petti, is do we know what model of shotgun the L32A1 or the L74A1 is? Is the L90A1 an MP5?

The L32A1 is the Browning Auto-5 shotgun. It was quite popular with the SAS in Maylasia. I suspect the L74A1 is a Remington 870, but that's a guess.
There's also a few entries I forgot.
L17A1 H&K AG-C
L17A2 H&K AG36
L105A1 Sig-Sauer P226
L106A1 Sig-Sauer P226 with shortened slide

L92A1 H&K MP5A3

L110A1 FN Minimi Para

Thanks. I had figured that the L32 was the Browning, since I didn't know of any other shotgun in British service that would be that early in the numbering. Also, the 870 sounds like a good guess, given its known usage in the British military.

Here are some designations that people might be interested in:
Mk 15 Mod 0 - McMillian M88 PIP
M203E2/A2 - M203 w/ QD bracket and M5 barrel stop for use with KAC RAS
Mk 153 Mod 0 - Talley SMAW
Also, there are rumors that the Crane M14 EBRs have been designated Mk 14 Mod 0, and there is currently a requirement out for a .300 WinMag rifle, to be designated Mk 13 Mod 0.

The Sources Sought notice was for a muzzle brake and sound suppressor for the Mk 13 Mod 0/1. Given that they specifically mention the existence of a Mk 13 Mod 1, the rifle must certainly be in inventory already.

Highly interesting!
Could you also please post the other designations of US weapons you have found so far? I´m especially interested in the designations of small arms (pistols, submachineguns, assault rifles, light machineguns). There are/were so many small arms in US service since 1945 (a lot of them only in very small numbers) you almost loose overview.
Fas.org and other sites on the net are outdated or list only the common designations.
Thanks in advance!

From what I can fathom from a very small picture of a new poster titled "SOF Weapons", the Mk 13 rifle is up to Mod 2. It looks like it is equipped with the Accuracy International Chassis Stock. I have also finally found official reference to the M14 EBR as the Mk 14 Mod 0, and the CQBR as the Mk 18 Mod 0. The EGLM, SCAR-L and SCAR-H are the EX 13 Mod 0, EX 16 Mod 0, and EX 17 Mod 0 respectively.

I'm guessing the EX is used to designate systems much like the XM prefix.
Here's a question, is the EX 13 Mod 0 the FN EGLM or the HK AG-C/XM320?
Thanks for the info.
Some of the British designations have been posted here -- but few between L110A1 and L120A1 and none up to L142A1. Would someone know??

L112A1 -- Enfield MAG-60-20 AD

L118A1
L119A1 -- Diemaco C8SFW
L120A1
...

Plus the other recent additions that don't quite fit:
L17A1 -- H&K AG-C
L17A2 -- H&K AG-SA80
...
L22A1 -- H&K SA80A2K
Thanks!

that's fine, by now I've read the documentation, and now I'm familiar with the EX/Mod system.
Also, HCV, I saw in the other thread that you had L104A1 as being an HK MZP-1. From what I've heard MPZ-1 is what the German Federal Police have designated the HK 69A1.

Yes and no. The MZP1 is not quite the same as the HK69A1. It has a different sight (no ladder sight, optimised for short-range police munitions) and is also available in 37x122mmR (which is the variant acquired by the British, AFAIK).

The L118A1 is reportedly an Accuracy International rifle in 7.62mm NATO. I caught a brief mention of it in a Jane's article discussing a MOD rifle scope requirement.

Would it be possible for someone to explain a common nomeclature for the FN MAG58 series that usually follows the pattern of: MAG-60-XX (as in MAG-60-20). It would appear that this is much in the same style as the FAL nomenclature of 50.XX. I'm just curious as I have seen this nomeclature used to differentiate coxial, infantry, etc versions of the FN MAG58.

MAG 60.20 - Standard Infantry (At least 15 subvariants)
MAG 60.30 - Aircraft (At least 4 subvariants)
MAG 60.40 - CoAx (At least 11 subvariants)
MAG 10.10 (60.10?) - Jungle version; shorter barrel and buttstock

Are these subvariants product improvements or more externally different versions? Also, are there any pictures online of the jungle variant?

The subvariants are either belt link-specific, country-specific, or installation-specific.
I've never seen the jungle variant. It does not have a NSN; instead, it has a FOM number.
Of course, there is the new Swedish-modified Para-style MAG58: the Ksp 58D.

Belgium;
FN = Fabrique nationale = National Company
*Browning Hi-Power = FN GP (Grande Puissance = High pressure)
*FN FNC (FN Carabine = FN Carbine)
*FN Minimi = US M249SAW (FN Mini Mitraillette = FN Small Machine Gun)
*FN MAG = US M240 (FN Mitrailleuse a Gaz = FN Machine Gun on Gas)
OLD;
*FN FAL (FN Fusil Automatique Légère = FN Light automatic rifle)
Small adjustment to that:
FNC M2 = solid buttstock
FNC M3 = folding buttstock (not with shorter barrel as advertised by FN)
Minimi M2 = regular FN belgium produced Minimi with fixed stock (not the same as the SAW which is made by FN in USA (FNMI)
Minimi M3 = Para version with shorter barrel and sliding stock
GP = old high power browning design pistol
MAG M2 = old mag58 with wooden buttstock
MAG M3 - M4 = tank mounted either on turret or coaxial cant remember which one but got it on FM somewhere.
fifty cal browning BMG we just call .50
AW = the AI 7.62 arctic warfare variant in 7.62
P90, everyone knows that one, used by DAS, SGR,SF still uses UZI in smg role untill they get more P90 they can use in their teams but prolly theyll get F2000 soon with or without grenade launcher dunno belgian army is run by regular army that hates Para's and SF
L118 is lightgun firing abbot 105 mm amm0 , L119 is lightgun firing US M1 ammoo , used by royal marines

I know. That it is why it is so confusing. I wish that I had saved the article. I can't find it again on the Janes site.
