Germany captivated by prisoner on roof ledge

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany was riveted on Wednesday by live television coverage of an admitted rapist balancing near the edge of the roof atop a four-story Dresden prison after he broke free from guards during a courtyard walkabout.

The 36-year-old jobless technician, who on Monday admitted kidnapping and raping a 13-year-old girl in a five-week ordeal earlier this year, ran away from guards and climbed up the side of the building before they could catch him.

German television networks interrupted regular broadcasting to show live images of the man walking back and forth near the ledge of the building. He has been on the roof since about 7:24 a.m. (0624 GMT), prison officials said.

The prisoner identified only as Mario M., who spent three years in jail for abusing a minor in 1999, admitted in court this week he had sexually abused 13-year-old Stephanie in his flat. He kidnapped the girl, now 14, on her way to school on January 11.
