This goes through the front sight. I was wanting one that attaches around the barrel at the bottom of the front sight like the one the guy in the pic has.
I have seen a couple that attach like the one from Botac but I would like it to attach lower.

This is Canada's don't want to spend too much $$ solution for not having to pay for a rail handguard system from Knights Armament. They designed this contraption to mount various accessories on the C7. It is never a good idea to mount to the barrel as it changes the point of impact more and more dramatically as the weight that are added to the weapon.
You are better off getting a rail handguard for accessories mount.

The hand guards are mounted on the barrel, so it would not matter right? perhaps its a but away from the end of the barrel but not much.

Handguard are held on the rifle with the delta ring and front handguard cap. it is a friction fit. mounting accessory on it although still add weight on the barrel assembly, but it is more distributed.
the barrrel clamp adds pressure because it is adding weight more foucsed on the front of the barrel and also the clamping action from the screws add more pressure on the barrel. so the weight plus the pressue of the mount on the barrel which cause the adverse effect on bullet impact.

There are some free floating hand guards out there.

I was a bit leary about cutting off the delta ring, but I did it anyways. Took about 10-15 minutes and was alot easier than I thought. The actual installation was even easier.
Thanks for steering me in the right direction :-)
