Top White House aide Karl Rove has said he will resign at the end of August.

"I just think it's time," Mr Rove said in an interview for the Wall Street Journal, adding that he was quitting for the sake of his family.

Mr Rove is a senior political adviser to President George W Bush and has worked with him for more than a decade.

As Mr Bush's chief strategist, he is seen as instrumental in delivering two presidential and several congressional election victories for the Republicans.

The two men began working together when Mr Bush first announced his intention to run for office as governor of Texas in 1993.

But Mr Rove has always been a controversial figure and has faced accusations of underhand tactics against Democrat opponents since his teenage years.

Last month, the US Senate issued a subpoena against him as part of an investigation into the sacking of eight federal prosecutors, but Mr Bush ordered him not to testify, citing executive privilege.

Mr Rove was also investigated in connection with the exposure of CIA agent Valerie Plame, though prosecutors decided he should not face any charges.

I mean really why the hatred and the scorn? What did he do to you besides help Bush. The man is top notch at what he does. History may remember him better than Bush. You guys make your dislike of Bush worse by continuing the unadulterated hate for 8 freakin years. Give it a rest, it is like moths to a light bulb with you bush bashers every time some anti-Bush article pops up here.

Whether you liked him or not you have to admit that he was drawing to much additional flak to an already embattled administration. Can't really fault Bush for saying hey you need to take a permanent vacation.

I don't like him, I used to stuff guys like him in lockers at school. However blind I hate all things Bush is ignorant. He is a political genius and the only reason to not like him is he's a geek.:)

Pffft. Rove is "leaving" politics the same way Putin will "leave" in 2008 - on paper only. You can bet your ass that the Grey Eminence will personally be managing the campaign of whichever Republican is selected to carry on the party line after Bush, probably McCain or Guliani.

I thought this thread is about Rove? Do actions by Democrats excuse the things that this administration have done?

Their accusations don't hold water. After endless investigations and tons of sword testimony, they still have nothing. Thats zip, nadda, zilch and zero.

When it comes to the CIA leak case, Armitage was the man. If we are talking about the attorney's, there is no crime. Those attorney's serve at the pleasure of the president. They are allowed to be fired for political reasons. Clinton fired a **** ton for political reason and nobody gave a damn!

He may be alot of things to alot of people, but he's no dumb ass. He's smart enough to know when and how to make an exit. It does raise the question, why would the author of "Cut and run," resign, and walk? Now..

No - but it does make people who vilify one side, while failing to acknowledge (or continually attempting to avert attention from) any wrongdoing on the other side, hypocrites.

Yes, there are hypocrites on all sides.

Possibly, but elections aren't for 3 mos yet, wouldn't this be his chance to get it right? The surge report isn't due for 3wks.

Wait a second, Rove? Wasn't it gay groups that started the movement to get married that brought up the whole issue to begin with?

Wait a second though. One guy (Rove) is vilified by the mass media and turned in to the most evil man on earth. The other is largely ignored, except by right wing news sources. How does that equal out to you?

I seriously cant get over that we constantly have to bring him up to point out your hypocrisy. Half the crap liberals/democrats complain about was common place and normal when Clinton was in office.

I don't mean you personally.

So 'Turd Blossom' is leaving the 'SS Mission Acccomplished'. And look, he's leaving the entire GOP without any lifeboats.

Seriously, it's a good thing this thug isn't going to be on the taxpayer payroll anymore. That's really all he is, a guy who just hits farther below the belt than Lee Atwater ever did. The funny thing is that the GOP hates him as much (if not more) than the Dems. Rove has won Bush short-term victories at the cost of completely trashing the GOP and its policies. The Rs know they're going to be left paying the bill when the voters come a-callin'. And that's not just me talking, plenty of conservatives are saying the same thing. Including Tom Pauken (http://www.dallasblog.com/tom-pauken/the-end-of-the-rove-era-in-republican-politics.html), a long-time GOP guy here in Texas.

In six short years as the White House “political guru”, not only has Karl Rove failed in his professed goal of building a permanent Republican majority, he has squandered a tremendous amount of the political capital that Goldwater and Reagan conservatives had built up over three decades. Rove has pressured Republicans to sacrifice conservative principles time and time again in the name of maintaining Republican control of the White House and the Congress. This consummate political pragmatist may have used the lessons he learned from Machiavelli’s The Prince to reach the pinnacle of political success. But, in the long run, it may all have been for naught. The supreme irony, of course – which the Karl Roves of the world never understand – is that pragmatism (as a guiding political philosophy) doesn’t work in practice.

Republicans don't feel the way about rove that you guys do. We realize that you hold Rove to a different standard that you hold democrats. Its the only explanation for Rove's demonetization, while past administrations get off scott free for doing the EXACT SAME THING. Hell, you guys hold Clinton and his administration on a pedestal of greatness and they did nothing any different from this white house.
