it actually improved my hearing a bit....it is a very nice unit. I had my for years before I upgraded to the Com-Tac, and now the Com-tac2.
when a massive barrage of shots are fired, the unit will cut off and you can't hear someone that is talking to you.

I almost got those a couple of weeks ago. Decided to get the non-amplified ones instead. From what I was told when I asked here they are good.

The Swedish army use the Peltor ComTac's and I thought that the were pretty much up for the task.. I'd recommend 'em!

With Peltor Sound Trap version (looks like that in the picture) you can't really tell where the sound comes from. With Peltor Comtac, no problem. Sound Trap is also more vulnerable to moisture what makes it rust inside / stop working totally if not opened (you better remove sealing rings and foam) and dried after use.
I wouldn't spend my money to Sound Trap. Comtac is good to go if you really need to hear more.
I have Comtac and ordinary Shotgunner with no amplification and I use mostly Shotgunner because it's smaller, lighter and I don't have to play with the volume settings and batteries all the time (so I can consentrate on things that I supposed to be doing).

I have both 6S and Comtacs, and both are great. No problems at all, other than the fact that any clicking noise can activate the sound damping--snapping fingers, gear clicking together, etc. I've never had a problem with rusting or moisture, although both do make your ears sweat :)
Anyone seen the headsets that blank out a certain frequency range? That sounds more promising, if it works. Supposed to blank out the frequencies of gunfire, but you can still hear other noises (unlike Peltors, which block out all sounds when there's a loud noise).

Sordin blocks out loud noises, not snapping or clicking etc... And it stays on all the time instead of cutting sound off. It just simply filters off the loud noises letting the other freqs pass.

I have both of those, and they both work great. The only difference is the headband. They're very good, especially for the price. I got mine from Cabela's also. I recommend the over the head. The behind the head doesn't work very well, when it's 100 degrees out, and you've got your eye pro on. It cause them to slide down, even when it's under your ACH. Every 5 min or so you have to adjust them and push them back up.

I have both pairs, depending on the hat I am wearing and which one, one of my kids grabbed.
They are great.
I walked under a tree with a bunch of roosting turkeys, and when they startled, sounded like a bunch of Huey's taking off. (Was elk hunting).
They are really nice.

I used to have similar muffs to the one in the picture on the left - the wire band that goes behind your head... Not sure for Peltor brand, but on mine, the wire would "Twa-a-ang!" pretty loud whenever it came in contact with anything else, especially when nudged a rifle/shotgun stock... The wire actually flares out quite a bit and so I developed aversion to any muffs with that design. I also find them apply less pressure than over the head muffs.
I have Peltor Com-Tac 2 (maybe one) and it's well worth the money, in my opinion. First night I got them, I put them on full amplification and listened to my hands rubbing together (it sounded like sand paper on rough wood) - good stuff!
Added - I'd recomend a pair on the right.
