need some advice
i have a chance at buying such a system for my little war museum but i really need to know the difference between the two !
which one off the two is issued as part of the sopmod kit ?
or are they just different brand names for use off the military and/or civilian market ?
I already know this :
Rail Interface System
Rail Attachment System
but thats about it
and yes i searched the net beforehand !!!

Modular Weapon System
Rail Interface System
Is used mainly be Navy
has the locking tab in the front on the top rail portion, but not as secure as the RAS
can accomdated heavy barrel
rail address are marked differently. It is numbered T,L,R,B (top, left, right, bottom) from the front sight to the delta ring in odd numbers
Rail Adapter(not attachemnt) System
SOPMOD component
has the locking tab in the rear on the top rail portion, clamps to the barrel nut which provide a more secure locking surface
barely fit a heavy barrel underneath.
RAS is the newer of the two design

locking tab is a clamp that is then tightened with a allan screw that locks the top rail to either the delta ring(RAS) or the front handguard cap(RIS)this clamping action creates a very tight fit min. any movement in the RAS/RIS so as to providing a better platform for a laser designator such as a PEQ2. The RAS also has a tighter profile at the front that limits the use of heavier profile barrel.
both units are issued, but the RIS is only issued to the Navy.
price are pretty similiar and you can order this from any authorized KAC dealer. but you might have a wait since most of the production are back logged.
better finding it used on sites like AR15.com.

I have both systems on my rifles. The RIS I acquired by accident. I find that the RIS fits tighter and there is no play whatsoever where as the RAS does have a bit of play between top and bottom portion.

The RAS on my M4 is extremely tight.

the play between top and bottom are usually result of a handguard cap. that is why the SAS upgrade RASS lower rail place another clamp on the lower rail so the lower rail don't start to loosen from repeated barrel strike.
let's look at it this way, clamping it to a stamped sheet metal handguard cap held in by the front gas block or is it clamping it to a solid piece machine steel barrel nut that is screw with torque wrench to the receiver...hmm which would be better? ;)
Knights RIS. replaces the standard hand guards on 9mm and 5.56 light weight carbine barrels.
Knight's M4 R.A.S. replaces the standard hand guards on 14.5 & 16 inch MILSPEC carbine barrels.

I have the KAC M14 RAS on a Polytech M14.
It's great kit, but the barrel clamp stripped out easily.
I expected better hardware at this price point.

You would think..., but my request was denied. I was told I could order a new
clamp for about $65.00 shipped or purchase a brand new RAS for $523.00 plus S&H.
I ordered a new clamp. I hope KAC treats out troops better than me.
