DUBAI (*******) - At least six Israeli soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday after a land mine blew up their military vehicle, Dubai-based Al Arabiya television said.

It said the explosion took place in the Zeitoun area as Israeli troops backed by tanks and helicopters raided Gaza.

Palestinian witnesses had reported seeing an armored vehicle ripped apart by a large explosion. The Israeli army had no immediate comment.

:| For the moment, the IDF aknoledges that an APC was blown up and that there are casualties.
According to some reports the palis shot it first with an ATGM (?), at the spot where they had buried the ED.

I guess it is, since the explosion happened when they pulled out.

The IDF is not releasing a statement because its unclear how many deads are, and whether they have all the bodies.

Alex: What defeat? All armies take casualties, it is a part of conflict. These guys fell doing their job. Soldiers may die but the battle (and in this case - the war) is no defeat.

REGIMENTAL PRAYER

Almighty, merciful, and loving Father,
you are the one who hears all our prayers and grants our petitions.

We ask you to remember, as we do,
the tremendous sacrifice made by those who went before us.
They have given their lives so that we might live and breathe freely.
We ask you to receive them into your hands.

Father, give us the strength and wisdom to learn from their example,
to uphold freedom and life at home and around the world.

Keep us vigilant as we guard the frontiers of freedom.

Give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to lead well.

Grant all of us courage and confidence.
Be, for all of us, troopers, a wise counsel in keeping peace
and a strong shield for us against our enemies.
Oh heavenly Father, give us the determination
that the peace and freedom won at such a high price be lasting!

Father, hold all of the troopers in the palm of your almighty hand
and protect them in the shadow of your wings.

Amen.

If I remember correct this is not the first time an IDF armored vehicle is destroyed by an IED.
A while ago an IDF Merkava tank was blown up by explosives buried in the road, the tank was
completely destroyed and entire tank crew killed.

The carrier was demolition unit Nagmahon , with explosives to blow up workshops inside . Because it had a lot of explosives inside , the impact of the mine was so harsh . 2 Palestinian groops claiming the responsobility , and saying they shoot it with ATGM ,and not mine , while second claiming it was a IED .
It's possible that they think so , because on this carrier one group opened a fire with light arms , machine guns and finnaly ATGM was fired at it , while other group detonated the IED .

This is no defeat for an Army , and i don't understand people who say so . Soldier who fought there new they are not in kinderguarden. Soldiers have risk to get killed in mission . Entire IDF wasn't blown off on that mission , so please stop saying whoever says it . IF you want to live in safety , you have enough places even in the army itself .

This operation was legitimate self-defense. The Israeli's were trying to stop rocket attacks against settlements that are internationally recognized as illegal. In other words, they were trying to protect thieves and cowards who bring women and children into their settlements to hide behind.

Palestinians Kill Six Israeli Soldiers

1 hour, 15 minutes ago

By IBRAHIM BARZAK, Associated Press Writer

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Palestinian militants blew up an Israeli armored personnel carrier Tuesday, killing six Israeli soldiers during one of the fiercest battles in Gaza City in recent months. Five Palestinians were killed and 96 wounded in the fighting.

For more than 12 hours, explosions and machine gun fire from tanks and helicopters were heard across Gaza City, and gray smoke rose into the air. The army had entered the crowded Zeitoun neighborhood in search of weapons workshops.

The death of six soldiers — the highest casualty count in a single army operation in nearly two years — was expected to increase public pressure on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) to withdraw Israeli troops and settlers from the Gaza Strip (news - web sites). Sharon is pushing for a withdrawal, but the plan was vetoed by his Likud Party in a referendum last week.

Sharon convened an emergency meeting of his inner Cabinet for later Tuesday to decide on a response. Israeli media said harsh retaliation was expected.

The armored personnel carrier blew up around 6:30 a.m. local, as it was on its way out of Gaza City. The vehicle was packed with about 220 pounds of explosives, for use in blowing up weapons workshops. Combined with a roadside bomb detonated by militants, the explosives produced a powerful blast.

An Israeli military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the blast scattered body parts across a radius of about 300 yards in a densely populated area, and that troops were heaving difficulty retrieving the remains under heavy fire.

At one point during the search, an Israeli helicopter fired a missile to keep away Palestinians, and doctors said eight people were wounded. Soldiers blasted open gates of houses and went up to roofs, apparently in search of remains.

Hamas gunmen displayed pieces of metal and bits of flesh they said they collected at the scene of the blast. Two masked men on a motorcycle held up a bloodied burlap sack with remains.

The damaged vehicle, with one of its tracks blown off, was driven away.

The Israeli raid began shortly after midnight, with three dozen Israeli tanks and several bulldozers rumbling into Zeitoun.

Soldiers took over several high-rise buildings, blasting open doors and setting up sniper positions. Attack helicopters fired machine guns and at least two missiles toward gunmen masked, while tanks fired machine gun rounds and one shell.

Palestinian gunmen planted mines and fired automatic rifles and homemade anti-tank shells during the intense fighting. In one incident, gunmen surrounded by children and teens set up a grenade launcher in an unpaved alley, waiting for a target.

Hamas claimed responsibility for detonating the bomb under the armored personnel carrier.

"Israel's incursion into Gaza this morning proves that Sharon has fallen into a trap and he doesn't know how to get out of it," said Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, referring to Sharon's failure to win approval for a Gaza withdrawal from his Likud Party.

Hundreds of gunmen participated in the fighting. The army blocked the main north-south road in Gaza, apparently to prevent more armed men from reaching the scene.

Residents said one metal workshop and toy factory was damaged.

In all, five Palestinians were killed in the fighting, including at least three gunmen and an 18-year-old whose head was blown off. Ninety-six Palestinians were wounded, including 14 who were in critical condition. Among the critically wounded was an 11-year-old boy on life support. Seven of the wounded had lost limbs.

The Zeitoun neighborhood, near the Jewish settlement of Netzarim, is known as a stronghold of Islamic militant groups.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia accused the Israeli military of trying to sabotage all peace hopes. "Each time there is hope for peace and for the resumption of the peace talks, Israel insists on going into places and escalating the situation," he said.

Israeli forces frequently enter cities and towns in the Gaza Strip, trying to arrest or kill members of militant groups and destroy workshops where weapons, including crude mortars and rockets, are made. Israel says it has to act since Palestinian security forces are doing little to rein in militants.

Tuesday's military operation came a week after Palestinian gunmen killed a pregnant Jewish settler and her four daughters in a shooting attack in Gaza.

On Monday, the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites) decided to hold its first-ever municipal elections, dropping a key demand that Israeli forces withdraw from its cities and towns first.

However, Qureia said general elections could not be held until the Israelis pull back. He said a June target date was unrealistic and called on the "Quartet" of Mideast mediators to set a new date.

That appeared to be an attempt to motivate the Quartet — the United States, European Union (news - web sites), Russia and the United Nations (news - web sites) — to persuade the Israelis to pull their troops back to allow the elections.

The Palestinians have had only one general election, in 1996, when Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) was overwhelmingly elected president against token opposition and a parliament was chosen. Voting set for 2001 was canceled because of Palestinian-Israeli violence, which erupted in September 2000.

In the first stages of the conflict, Israeli forces moved deep into Palestinian areas, entering cities and towns and setting up roadblocks. The Israelis said the measures were necessary for security, but they paralyzed the Palestinian government and economy.

Qureia said he would raise the general election idea in a meeting with National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) in Berlin next week.

Ariweiner , i am so sorry , that even in the time when our soldiers die , you still post explaining here , how it was justified .

Kasam rockets fired on Israeli town of Ashkelon , that is located beyond Gaza line , and deep inside Israeli territory . The production of Kassam-2 was made to give it better chance to hit inside Israeli territory .

So , listen to the same advice that i gave to Mustamato , and get lost from here .

If not those "thieves" and "cowards" that hide behind Women and children (NO , NOT UNLIKE THOSE BRAVE PALESTINIAN FIGHTERS ) , Israeli south would be long ago override by attacks from Gaza .

And it takes a brave poster like you , to post in place where Israelies grieffor their soldiers lost , post inside there how ok this attack was .
So , how about this ? I am going to rape your mother , but when you will cry all over it , i will say that it's ok , you know why ? Because you made me angry .Good enough annalogy for you ?

People who shoot little girls and their pregnant mother from close range doesn't deserve any freedom - and if you will stay as smart as you are today, you will probably never gain it.

Since Israel is the "civilized" player here, it is incumbent upon them to respect International Law and remove their illegal occupation. Once they do so, only then can the Palestinians be expected to do anything. Secondly, there were Palestinian freedom fighters and a number of innocent civilians killed in this latest invasion and occupation of their land. But no one seems to be bothered about that apparently.

Once they do so, only then can the Palestinians be expected to do anything. Secondly, there were Palestinian freedom fighters and a number of innocent civilians killed in this latest invasion and occupation of their land. But no one seems to be bothered about that apparently. Ariweiner minds says - "Jewish pigs killing poor arbs ? A CRIME !!!! the arbs must defend themself"

"Glorious arb killing an instict like that jew ? ZIG HAIL ! ZIG HAIL ! ZIG HAIL ! its was only a self defence"

and yeah im blaming him for hating jews... bite me !!!! :bash:

I'm bothert about everysingle death. I regret every life lost.
But you totaly miss the point. The palestians need to stop the ocupation of fellow palestians. What would be the need of a state with no "ocupation" when the minds of the people are still ocupied by hate??

International law aint perfect. There is a lot to be done on that, especialy when it comes to terrorism.
You can't give a half law.

Pardon my ignorance,
but why is it that islamic fighters like Hamas and also the Chechnyans (spelling?) are so obsessed with mutilating the bodies of their enemies?

I mean I have dug around in dussins of coprses during med-school, but its sickening to me.
Is it to make "trophies"?

RIP :(

What I have learned that this is some sort of "let's prevent him from revenging against me in the afterlife-"sort of thing. Again: I am not an expert of such things, but only tell what I'm being told.
The mutilation works like: How he go off to Paradise, that is how he look in Paradise. By cutting of hands, he can't strike at you. By cutting off legs, he can run after you.

This go way back before religion even got in to practise. Mutilation is not of Muslim origin. Tribes all over the world have mutilated their enemies for different reason. Or eat him for that matter, to get to his warrior soul.

Also in modern time, so called civilized armies have had some bad apples that have turned to ear collecting and different kind of mutilating corpses.

This happens, and it is of course by our standards, despicable.

SO basically, you re the ****ing RACIST here, you don`t take the palestinians as plain human beings with their code of moral and universal limits, but as a group of retards who are not responsible for their act.
If I follow your sick logic, I should keep them under my custody for ever, because they are not able to handle themselves and even less a State!!!

I, as opposed to you, respect and consider the palestinians as human beings, responsible individually and collectively for their deeds, just as we Israelis are. I respect the palestinian who fights me, I despise the one who purportedly kills innocents in a bus or a bar, I despise the one who lynches a soldier because he gives way to his/her humanity to become no more than a barbaric monkey, I despise the populist asshole who gives his benediction on such behaviour, I despise the fighter, might he be a freedom or a regular soldier who doesn`t show due respect to fallen ennemy.
But more than anything else, I despise the "civilised-lesson-giver" who tries faithfully to defend such behaviour.
When some palestinians display such barbaric attitude, and you find them excuses, you don`t help them, you confort them in the image you wnt from them, good exotic and backward arabs, while all I hope is to see the raise of palestinians with who i could share my falafel some day.
