sorry bout spelling and stuff
it started out trying to show how differnt they are

While trying to write this essay I discovered a shocking truth. My culture is that of no culture, we are given so much choice in life and very few things are clearly defined that we grow up to become ‘free’ people. We in fact make our own idea of self. The world around us presents examples of ‘people’ and we then pick or not it’s our choice, which of these we would like to become. Having such a loose sence of ‘soceity’ makes some how more yet at the same time less than other cultures. People become flexible and supple able to fit in or to sit back and observe. The one true constant in my culture that we all must adhear to is to consume. We are told be who ever you want, do what ever you want, you are free to do as you please but, there is always a but, you must consume. As a whole we are fercly independent and at the same time reliant on others. The only way for consuimerism to survive is constant expantion. New custumers and markets must be found. With out this expantion there is no one to sell to and nothing to make the product from.
A dollar value is placed on all things; nothing is with out a price. This is a two edged knife as the cost is not always paid by the purchacer, quite often a higher price is payed by seller. Iraq is a prime example, American (belived to be the home of my culture) wished to purchase ‘freedom’ for Iraq. The cost is steady growing as Iraq has refused to sell out cheap. This is seen as wrong and horrible yet it is part of my culture. The Jivaro indains of Ecuador constantly war among themselves for which polygamy is the direct cause. Wives are spoils of war as the men may have 5-8 wives, the men raid neighboring tribe or a Jivaro living at some distance. The captured women and children are then adopted into the victor’s family not as slaves but as eqauls. In this respect our cultures are much alike, they both fight wars for their own profit. The people who remain after the fighting is over are then intergrated into the ‘family’ as equals. After Iraq has ‘cooled down’ and a head of state has been placed in office, Iraq now an equal member of our culture will have the freedom to achive what ever they are able.
The Jivaros have a pseudo-religion based on the devil or el diablo as said by Spanish. He is a form of super Jivaro who is all powerful yet not evil for the sake of being evil. Before any importain event is undertaken el diablo must be consulted. As there is no set preisthood in the society any person may converse with him. While in seclusion a potion made from a special bark is consumed. The coffee coulored fluid cause a hallucinogenic state in which dabilo discusses the matter with the man and a concution is reached. In consumerism it is the masses that decide the couse of action. Public opinon is upmost, as they are the consumers of the produced product. Leaders may use the media and recent events to sway people in the direction of there chosing. The support for the Veitnam war was huge at the beginning but as the cost of men begain to out way the value of product people lost intrest and wished to cut their losses. The leaders where forced to pull out from a winable situation due to public opinon. Our culture showed that people really do matter. The two soceitys are diferent in the respect that the Jivaro act of there own violation but we require the groups aproval.
The head of the man the Jivaro killed in order to gain his wife and children is removed and kept as a trophy. The head is shunk; this is achived by removing the skull from the flesh of the head. This flesh is then soaked in a blue-black vegetable extract containg a form of preservative. The head is then filled with hot sand and turn for even drying. When the sand becomes cool it is replaced with new hot sand. Eventualy the head reaches the size of a mans fist. After a month or so a ceremonial dance is held and drinking ensures. It is possable to purchace the head from from the victor at a price he appreciates. Consumerism also collects trophys from its conquests. Not quite as gory as the Jivaro but still trophys, Sadam Hussein is such a trophy. He may not be gutted and shrunk yet he serves the same perpose. I do not think any one will be able afford the price they would ask for him.
If a man or woman is unfaithful in our soceity the couple break up or if married divorce. The material posestions of the couple are split with a favorable light shone on the person keeping custody of the children. If there are no children it is split 50/50 but good lawyers are used to gain a larger chuck by one or both partys. However the Jivaro have a much simpler system, if she cheats once her scalp is cut like a checkerboard. If it happens again the woman is then pined to the ground by having a metal spike driven through the meaty parts of her legs. The woman is then cared for so as not to die and can be left in this postion for up to three weeks. If my some chance this has not been enough of a warning and infidelity accures again she is killed. Again there are large differences between the two cultures yet it would make more sence if the Jivaro divorced because the have many wives and the lost of one makes little impact on the whole.
In discusing this with my friends they where amazed at the similer traits in both cultures. While at the same time so very different. These completely different words one a small group of tribes in a rain forest who wear little to no clothes, hunt with blow guns and shrink the heads of their enemys to keep as trophys looks on the surface just like the globe spaning corperations of consumerism. But this likness is brief any kind of thought on the matter quickly brings to light the many and drastic differinces. Both are in their own ‘world’ the true way and all others are wrong and must be destroyed or absorbed into the mass (as in consuimerism). The head collectors are seen as bad things from our side yet their veiw of us could be equally as disturbing. So all cultures regardless of location or envorment will have things in common and things valued only to them.
