Put one of these on layaway recently. As far as the "Bruniton" finish, I've heard some say that it's quite durable and others say that it's not. To any M9/92FS owners, how's your finish doing as far as overall durability?

If it's good enough for the US military to uses it, it's good enough for me.

Military could do better in my opinion, but that's a debate that has been going on for 20+ years now. Personally if I go back over and could get away with it I would take my Glock 23 over an M9 like I had last time.

The Sig P226 should have won the contract back in the 80s. A much better pistol in my opinion.

Agreed.

True... too bad it didn't.

Is that finish any different from the stock finish they put on any and all 92's?

I've seen hundreds, mostly with holster wear. Few people beat them.

I just traded in my 1911 for it because my God, (read HQMC) hates me. I've never even really shot one before. My TL told me to buy 3rd party mags because the issue ones won't load if they stay loaded for more than a day.

Anyone have any recommendations?

You had to turn in your 1911 for a Beretta?
Sorry to hear that. I remember when our units exchanged them, in the late 1980's. I'm surprised any were still in inventory, unless they were the heavily refurbished, custom ones.
What kind of unit are you in, spyguy*?

i've heard the same thign about your issue magazines. i sold some beretta factory mags to a guy who was heading back to iraq, just been promoted and was his battalions XO, he needed more mags for his m9.

i'm guessing the issue mags are beretta mags...hopefully they aren't as ****ty as i've heard about.

I had a Beretta M92FS for a little while, wasn't very impressed with it. Ended up selling it and buying a SigPro SP2009 and have no regrets.

Can't really help you with the finish, I really didn't have the gun for more than a few trips to the range.

Sorry.

Personally, I don't think the Beretta is a BAD weapon; there are just a lot of other pistols I'd prefer to carry.
It would be cool if the military were to make a list of approved sidearms, and allow soldiers to carry the weapon of their choice, as long as they can qualify and keep it properly maintained.

I bet $50 some 88M's would try to carry Desert Eagles.

I would like this a lot. The pistol of choice would still have to be chambered in 9mm. I'd still take my Sig 226 over the M9. Although it would make a lot of people happy I'm sure, it will NEVER happen.

Personally I feel the P226 is over rated but what anyone feels is better has alot to do with personal taste.

I had a P226R for about a year or so. I found it to be a quality made pistol with clean machining and worksmanship, using quality made parts, but there's nothing about it but hype that I saw to make it a better pistol than the M9.
The M9 has a nicer trigger, better control positions and provides a more comfortable grip to me, with using a very accurate, chromelined barrel to boot.
I sold off my P226R to a friend and spent the money on a 92FS to keep my M9 company and it was a great decision.;-)

Slater, I've had both for a few years now being moved in and out of holsters, bags, and pants waistbelts. I've put a few thousand rounds through both without a single malfunction and the finish has worn a little, but you can always refinish them in the future.

All you need to take care of the pistol is a tube of Tetra grease to lube it, a can of CLP, some Qtips and an Otis kit to clean it and you'll be real good.:)

Your issue ones should be newer CheckMates with the updated finish and standard music wire mag springs. I don't know what your TL's talking about but that shouldn't be unless there not getting proper cleaning and changing.
All springs wearout of course and the military puts the most abuse on anything.

If you want to buy some mags than don't waste your time (or life) with anything other than MDS (Beretta factory) and MecGar 92 mags.
The MDS are parkerized and blued and the MecGar's are blued.
MecGar does make some 17 round mags too which I found to be nice with there extra two rounds.

GS,

No the screen name was for Spy Sunglasses, but on this site it comes off a little different. I'm in a ReserveForceRecon company. They were MEUSOC 1911s so they were very old but with lots of smithing to keep them up to speed. Their lives are not over, we gave them to the new "SOCOM funded" MSOB units.

Biglug,
It is possible that my TL hasn't dealt with newer ones. The last time he touched one was probably 3-4 years ago. I guess I'll check them out, but thanks for the tip off with the factory and MecGar mags.

I'd love to bring my P226, no way that would fly though.

I was a 240 gunner while I was over in Iraq so I had the M9 as a backup and yes those mags were complete crap. The springs were so weak that they would only feed 2-3 rounds before stopping completely. Even tried loading 10 rounds instead of 15 with the same result.

It definitely has to do with personal taste like you said. Although I qualified with the M9, I dislike the ergonomics of the pistol, the trigger, sights and size. I guess I'm just used to my Sig 226 more than the M9. Anyone would feel the same way shooting one pistol more than another.

I've shot the M9 and liked it.

But I have to stick with my Glock23. Never jams, very accurate, and the factory mags are top quality.

never never never..put your life on the line with a brand of aftermarket magazine called Checkmate..cheap#ss POS that I "accidently" left by the motor pool and a careless tanker flattened it with his M1 Abrams..
the scene brought me to tears...of joy.. (yes.I had replaced the springs and the follower in the mag..and it still didnt work)..

Boss let me get some 10 round Clinton clips..MecGar I think they were..and some factory Beretta ones..go with the factory made mags..

It's not the pistol I have a problem with its the caliber. Now give me some quality HP's and I would have no prob with the M9 or any other big name 9mm pistol, ie Glock 17, Sig 226, HK, etc. IMHO 9mm ball just dont cut it for personal defense.

Hi guys,

I have a doubt, was the 92 ever approved by NSW or it never passed the avaluation phase? Thanks in advance.
