Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of good clean drinking water because some liberal fought for minimum water quality standards. He takes his daily medication with his first swallow of coffee. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to insure their safety and work as advertised.
All but $10.00 of his medications are paid for by his employers medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance, now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs this day. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; His bottle is properly labeled with every ingredient and the amount of its contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some tree hugging liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the subway station for his government subsidized ride to work; it saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees. You see, some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn’t think he should loose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
Its noon time, Joe needs to make a Bank Deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae underwritten Mortgage and his below market federal student loan because some stupid liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his life-time.
Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. He arrives at his boyhood home. He was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans. The house didn’t have electricity until some big government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification. (Those rural Republican’s would still be sitting in the dark)
He is happy to see his dad who is now retired. His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home.
He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. (He doesn’t tell Joe that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day) Joe agrees, “We don’t need those big government liberals ruining our lives; after all, I’m a self made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have”.

Joe stops by Shocker1's shop and gets his car worked on. He bitches because the price is so high and not affordable.
Shocker1 has to pay for those "liberal" things that make life so grand.
Shocker1 then adds environmental service fees to keep up with liberal times. Joe is pissed because of new fees.
Shocker1 only hires 1099 Contract techs. Shocker1 is a wealthy Conservative despite the grand spread the wealth theme.
Shocker1 is pissed that the government borrows my retirement money for FREE. Shocker1 gets old, collects his devalued dollars from SSI. Thank you!

Funny, but I can't see any of those can be attributed to liberals/left...
Safe cars, food, clean water in taps and hygiene products was a demand from public and a marketing push from producers not state, state regulated safety is a push from insurance companies not a poor bastards carrying left.... For thousands of centuries people were living in their own homes without any help of state. etc etc...
Its a wishful list of solved nonexistent problems, that were either very well handled by people themselves or didn't existed at all...
And foremost I'm not a cattle so someone could decide what I should or not do for my personal good. Shove all that help sponsored from my wallet up your own asses and leave me alone... :)
Those contributions sound so noble, but unfotunately today's liberals are not the liberals that cared about good of society; today's so called liberlas pat themselves on the back while milking the government by defending and caring for the worst of humans.

Oh, allow me.
Joe gets up at 6:00am to prepare his morning coffee. He fills his pot full of water which contains no fluoride because some liberal claimed that it's a harsh chemical that's harmful to humans, so Joe suffers the effects of horrendous tooth decay.
A year ago, Joe would have taken his medication with his coffee - but due to the escalating cost of healthcare - driven by ever-escalating regulatory requirements mandated by liberals, his new employer can't afford to offer health insurance. So he has no pills to take, and the giant tumor in the shape of Nancy Pelosi's uterus continues to grow on his back.
Joe takes his morning shower reaching for his shampoo; which is another unsafe product manufactured by prison labor in China. Even though there are ingredients listed, nobody really knows what's in it...though it vaguely smells like Manatee semen. It's the only brand he can afford - the others are quite expensive due to ever-increasing restrictions placed on the manufacturers by liberal labor and consumer laws. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. He notices that his body is still covered with sticky Manatee semen - no doubt because the liberals have restricted his shower to spray water at the same speed that Iron Eyes Cody, the crying Indian in the 1971 pollution PSA, was able to produce water from his tear ducts. Joe lives far beyond the reaches of any mass transit system, since elitist liberals refused to allow evil industrialists to tear down their leafy exclusive neighborhoods to build a rail system. So into his car he goes.
Joe gets his breakfast on the road, since he has a 2 hour commute in from the suburbs and has no time to cook his own breakfast. It's bacon and eggs. As he sits down to eat it, a militant lesbian slaps it off his table and shouts "meat is murder" in his face. After noticing that he smells like Manatee semen, she lunges at his genitals with a plastic spork and tells him that all *** is rape. Shaken, Joe leaves the restaurant.
Joe begins his work day; he has a good job with excellent pay, medicals benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Oh wait, Joe is daydreaming again - that was last year. Joe was laid off from GM when they realized they could no longer afford to pay the lavish benefits that they were forced to give to the union. So today his temp job is to stand out in front of the Suds Carwash with a big sign for $6.50/hr. He'll make less all day than it cost him to drive to work, but maybe he'll get laid by one of the foxy ladies working there, so what the hell.
Joe has to pay his his below market federal student loan because there was no way Joe could afford to pay for school at the time. The liberal establishment had made education so expensive - with lavish benefits stemming from the union etc. - that Joe had to take out a massive loan just to go to college. He'll still be paying this long after his degree ceases to be relevant. But those tenured professors will have their retirement.
Joe is home from work, he plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive to dads; his car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards. Yes, Joe really likes his Toyota. He would have bought American, but he's not stupid. American companies are saddled with union labor, and those outlandish benefits force them to cut all sorts of corners to remain competitive.
His dad lives on Social Security and his union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to. Joe laments the fact that he won't get those benefits himself - being laid off and all -and the fact that Social Security is going insolvent. To bad that economic model wasn't sustainable -what were the liberals thinking? His dad has already taken out all the money he ever put into Social Security - and in fact is now living on money that Joe is putting in.
Joe wonders who will pay his benefits and take care of him. Thanks to liberals convincing his ex-wife that her fulfillment could only be achieved in the workplace, she decided she'd never have children - so he'll be broke and alone when he retires. After his visit with dad he gets back in his car for the ride home. Joe is filled with a nearly uncontrollable rage at the fact that the cranky old bastard got all the stuff he wanted - country home, nice retirement, kids to visit him, and Joe will be left with nothing. Joe begins plotting the murder of his father - that will serve the sonofabitch right for spending his money.
He turns on a radio talk show, the host’s keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. Then the local station breaks in, saying that beginning next week, the show will no longer be heard because liberals in Congress have decided to legislate what people are allowed to hear on the radio.

Propaganda at its finest.
The entire time the author uses the term "liberal" and using the traditional meaning, he is correct, but then he does a bait and switch routine and says "Republicans" at the end.
"Republicans" ended slavery and have been some of the most "liberal" minded people in the history of the United States.
A lame argument written by some sap in my hometown that has a whole lot of "followers" nodding their heads following someone else's lead thinking what an amazing article it is.

And you completely missed my point...
The fight going on in America right now is between liberal, conservative, religious zeolots, socialists, and the sheep that form a majority of the status quo.
The term "Democrat" or "Republican" means you simply sold your vote to corporate **** sucker that sort of resembles what you hate the least.
I mean you toss around "Republican" like the guy who wrote article did.

Well, I guess I should have used this when I quoted you:
"Republicans" ended slavery and have been some of the most "liberal" minded people in the history of the United States.
I recognized how the author of the article conveniently slipped that in at the end there, but regardless of the article- the platforms of Democrats and Republicans and Liberals and Conservatives (often thrown in interchangeably in our society today) have changed considerably (especially in the last 10 to 15 yrs).

Only by the ignorant and yes, I am making the claim that most voters, regardless of party affiliation (or lack there of) are at worst ignorant or at least ill-informed.
In a society that tolerates "No Child Left Behind" as a rational education plan I find little difficulty in making this assumption.
Democrats are just as "conservative" as Republicans, using the literal meaning of the word as the author of the article used the term "liberal".
Unless, of course, you intend to convince us, or rather, me, that Hillary Clinton or John Edwards are somehow outside the box, not stuck in their ways, and do not represent decades long status quo for the Democratic Party.

I wouldn't try to convince anyone of this at all. All I am saying is that our politicians have gone more to the fringe (on both sides of the spectrum). Comparing a Republican or Democrat of the 1950's, or for that matter earlier, to those of today is comparing very different ideologies.

Again, you are talking about PARTIES.
In general liberalism focuses on individual rights and equality of opportunity. Neither the democrats nor the Republicans are "conservative" or "liberal"
Free market, capitalism, civil rights, representation, etc are all, in theory LIBERAL concepts.
The founding fathers of this nation were LIBERALS, in the truest sense.
But the term has been corrupted by the left and right to mean something else and through ignorance or laziness have corrupted the meaning of the word.
A lack of civics courses and U.S. political/history classes (thanks No Child Left Behind...and ignorant school administrators) our schools have, for the past 10 years turned out some of the most ignorant people when it comes to knowing HOW the government works and the talking heads LOVE to simply the message to make it palatable to the uniformed.
So now, "liberal" is synonymous with left, left-wing, socialist, democrat (a change in meaning itself and in many cases a perfect study in irony...as is "Republican").
Synonymous does not make it true.
The problem with this discussion is that the guy writing the article uses "liberal" to defined "left of center", yet cites many examples that were handled by many folks that were all across the political spectrum.
The error is further exacerbated by folks turning this into a political argument using the terms Republican (which defines a party that began as a PRO-Republic and anti-States' rights party...BIG GOVERNMENT and PRO-TAX) and Democrat (which began as a Southern led, pro-States' rights).
Language is the core of this discussion now, or rather, possibly the lack of understanding of meaning.
The person who looks at the term liberal, or liberalism, as a negative, as a political term, in the sense of us vs. them, is not only ignorant, but also detrimental to today's political theater.
Liberalism at its purest form means FREEDOM for the people. No kings, or nobles, churches and priests, and no dictators no cults of personality. Liberalism is synonymous with LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.
If someone cannot come to terms with this they should not be involved in this discussion.

The thing that amazes me is that both sides of politics lay claim to all of these things we take for granted yet the vast majority of things that we take for granted were fought for with blood, sweat and tears by the union movement.
Without the union movement we would not enjoy the standard of living we currently enjoy.
And in many countries it was the union movement who laid the foundation for democracy.

Back on topic...........
"Those damn liberals"
left/right, liberal/conservative, Democrat/Republican, Labour/National, them/us, wrong/right
Wouldn't a more appropriate description of current politics be that old and incredibly well done marketing campaign for Miller Light?

Isn't it conceivable that BOTH sides represent the same lousy, stale product?
The marketing slogans may be entertaining, but the product the slogans represent is the same and the product sucks.
Stop focusing on the messengers, start focusing on the product
