I think the Bloc is making wild swings at our current government to buy some votes. Duceppe does have a point where, by notifying NATO now about that withdrawal timeline, it gives somebody else to prepare for that mission and takeover (hopefully france, Germany). I respect Stephane Dion at this time to not say anything in this already emotional, tense time.
RIP to the victims, and hope the injured get back well soon.

Quebec premier calls on Quebecers to support troops

Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe vowed Thursday — in the wake of the deaths of three Quebec-based soldiers this week — to bring down the Conservative government if it does not commit to a full troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2009.
He said if Prime Minister Stephen Harper does not soon notify NATO and participating countries of Canada's withdrawal plans, the Bloc will vote against the expected autumn throne speech with the hopes of bringing the government down.
Duceppe would need the Liberals to vote with his party in order to succeed.
During a Thursday press conference on climate change, Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion would not comment about banding with the Bloc.
"I am not here to make threats about that," he said. "I don't want to play politics on the back of the victims."
Duceppe called for an emergency debate on the Afghan mission when Parliament reconvenes on Sept. 17.
Duceppe said, in a French statement, that he shared in the sadness of the families, friends and colleagues of the soldiers and offered his sincere condolences.
"All families who have a brother, a wife, a father in Kandahar must be feeling this sadness," he said. "These latest victims in the Afghan conflict remind us of the dangers and the difficult conditions under which soldiers working in the theatre of combat are exposed."
On Wednesday, Master Warrant Officer Mario Mercier and Master Cpl. Christian Duchesne, both based out of Valcartier, were killed in a blast about 50 kilometres west of Kandahar following a fierce battle with insurgents.
An Afghan interpreter was also killed in the blast, while Radio-Canada cameraman Charles Dubois suffered a serious leg injury and reporter Patrice Roy was treated for shock.
News about the most recent deaths broke as the body of 23-year-old Pte. Simon Longtin arrived in Canada. Longtin died Sunday after his light-armoured vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.
In light of the most recent deaths, which brought the Canadian death toll in the Afghanistan mission to 69, Duceppe said the government must commit to a full troop withdrawal in February 2009.
Dion repeated his position that Harper should immediately notify NATO that Canada will withdraw its troops.
"Why does Mr. Duceppe want to wait until October? I'm asking the prime minister to notify NATO, the government of Afghanistan that the combat mission in Afghanistan will end in February 2009," Dion said. "Let's do it today. Why wait until October?"
He said it was important to notify NATO now to give its partners time to replace the Canadian contingent.
Charest makes call for support of troops
Quebec Premier Jean Charest, meanwhile, called on Quebecers to support their troops in Afghanistan in the wake of the recent deaths.
"It's one thing to have a view about war, about engaging," Charest said Thursday from a conference in Kuujjuaq in northern Quebec. "But once the Parliament of Canada decides that we're going in ... we have to support the soldiers that fulfill that mission in our name, who risk their lives."
Charest said the deaths were a tragedy for both the families and for the country.
"We're very saddened by the lost of the soldiers, and yesterday's event also reminded us that journalists also risk their lives in covering these events," he said. "We hope that Mr. Roy and his cameraman will be safe and will be OK."
Harper released a statement calling Wednesday "a very sad day" and extending his sympathy to the families.
"We are all proud of these exceptional Canadians and grateful for their sacrifices," he said. "These soldiers gave their life helping to bring stability and security to Afghanistan. We will always remember them."

Nobody is waiting in the wings to take over. France and Germany are NATO pipe dreams for Kandahar province. There are very few (read none) countries willing to take the kind casualities that we have taken / are taking. If we pull out Kandahar province will revert back to the wild west.

just my $.02

PS. Giles Duceppe can go fvck his hat! he's a worse bane on this country than Taliban Jack!...and I fvcking hate Jack.

Sig, I was wishfully thinking somebody would take over. Canadian troops have been preparing, and training hard all these years for these missions. I think we should continue that commitment, and not let some weak kneed opposition party make us second guess. Everytime I read the papers about what they have to say, my iq goes down 3 points.

I was hoping south korea, japan, and a few south american countries help us out as well. But I'm not really into the politics behind it all.

When will the UAE come over? Have some of the NATO hopefuls like Ukraine and Georgia been asked? Maybe NATO could promise to let them in alittle sooner if they came down.

It's a NATO mission. I'm not sure about whether or not non NATO countries can join (maybe but I'm not the one to ask). AFAIK, UAE troops are already there.

I thought there was something like 37 countries with troops in Afghanistan? Sounds to me like that is way more than just NATO countries, of course this would also not be the first time I got my facts mixed up.

Anyways, what more does Duceppe want? Harper has already said that we will not be in Afghanistan past Feb '09 unless a majority of parliament votes in favour of extending the mission.

More useless political grandstanding from the Bloc.

I think the complaint is that the rotoation ends in Feb of 09 (I'll be there) but no exit strategy has publicly been announced, and the government has not formally told NATO that we're done in 09.

It's hard to have something all canadians can agree on when the Bloc wants to Quebec to separate from Canada as its own state. Duceppe better stop trash talking and get on with the program.

Question, when is the appropriate time to ask parliament to extend the afghan mission?

what everyone is forgetting is, the mission will not be extended without parliamentary approval. by then there may be an election and if the conservatives get a majority then that approval will be forthcoming

Sad but true. I dont like how newpapers and articles have titles such as "Van-doo killed" rather than "Soldier/ Troop". It sounds like they are regarded as Van-doo's, not as CF members. When a soldier from PPCLI, RCR or a reserve unit was killed, they were regarded as Soldiers. Why the special name?

Why the special name?

Thats a rhetorical question, right? We all know why it is different.
