question: the two barrels that got cleaved into two pieces......they were manufactured like that, i.e., two parts attached together? or did the explosion really rip one solid metal barrel apart?

No... just has to do with how thick the barrel is or its metallurgy.
It's worth noting that all of the rifles KB'ed, only two did so dramatically (and completely) - all of the bores bulged and gave little cracks (according to the original poster).
I've actually known somebody who bought a rifle that had a bulged barrel from similar KB - a dark ring in the middle when he peered down the bore with a flashlight... He shot it quite a bit too, before he found out, that is :/

Apparently, Howa's barrel split as well - just not as drastically (about 3" split")...
(it suppose to say so in the description or the original poster have said so)...
But yes, nothing compared to some bad ju-ju that happened to Rem 700 or the Browning rifle.
