oh i like this one
the direct cause was the goal of removing the united states navy as a power in the pacific
why did japan want this?
a number of reasons that could vary in importance depending on whom you ask
due to a trade embargo, japan was down to very minimal natural resources, to an already expansionist power, this meant one thing- widen your sphere of influence
why was there a trade embargo?
directly because of the 1941 occupation of french indochina (note: relations had soured since the japanese invasion of manchuria in 1931, again for resources)
in short: japan is an expansionist power that invaded manchuria as early as '31- the US had an increasingly defensive posture against japan, japan realises that in order to survive as an expansionist power they had to decapitate the US navy
what was the result? i think it might have been yamamoto that said of the attack, i fear we may have awoken a sleeping giant
he was right!

The Japanese wanted the resources of Asia. They were merrily going about invading and occupying the place. It was only a matter of time before the U.S. decided they weren't going to let Japan take it all.
The Japanese were right about the fleets being the power projectors in this theater. They did very a poor analysis of U.S. industrial capacity and manpower pool.
They also misread the American people and their politicians. This could be looked at as a cause. Their willingness to got to war was based, in part, on a faulty analysis of the U.S.
The effects:
U.S. joins the war.
High civillian and military casualties for Japan.
Major Japanese cities are levelled, burned, and levelled again.
Post-war redevelopment takes place in a surreal and tragic landscape.
Entire Japanese government re-written from top to bottom at the direction of the U.S.
Nuclear weapons deployed over Japan with hardly a voice against them in the U.S. The American people would not have been gung-ho for peacetime development of these weapons.
Possible reduction in Asian civillian casualties overall due to cessation of Japanese occupation in many areas. Mitigated by Communists occupation of some areas, which was no walk in the park either.
Communists don't get to occupy entirity of China or Korea, like they had planned.
U.S. establishes doctrine that f'ing about with the SOAR area is bad ju-ju and just might get you blown into the stone-age.

You being a future marine and all, I think you should know some basic history about Japan. Many marines died there.

I think that one of the main tactical conclusions that came from Pearl Harbor is that the US navy quickly realised that the Battleship was not as important a comodity as the aircraft carrier. fortunately the Japanese did not find the carrier fleet at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese made great efforts during this conflict to convert a lot of there battleships into makeshift carriers without very much success.

I thought It was because of Godzilla?
A-bomb tests and radiation made mutant lizards , one of them ( Godzilla) went nuts in Tokyo and Japan wanted pay back , So they attacked Pearl
