One killed in suspected Abu Sayyaf attack on Philippine marines

ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (AFP) May 12, 2004
Suspected Muslim guerrillas from the Abu Sayyaf group threw a bomb at a military vehicle in the southern Philippines Wednesday, killing one person and wounding three others, the military said.
The attackers hurled the home-made device at a passing armoured personnel carrier in Jolo island but it fell short and killed a teenage girl, regional military chief, Lieutenant General Roy Kyamco said.

Kyamco said troops would continue their pursuit of the group which has been linked by both Washington and Manila to the Al-Qaeda network.

Abu Sayyaf guerrillas have launched kidnapping-for-ransom and bomb attacks against Christians and foreigners in the southern Philippines for over a decade.

But in recent years, local troops, with US support and training, have killed or captured several senior Abu Sayyaf leaders.
