Yikes. Pete Stark; evenhanded & non-prejudicial
WASHINGTON — When Daniel Dow of California faxed a protest letter to his congressman over his vote last week against a House resolution condemning the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, he expected to get a form letter a month later.
Instead, Dow's representative, Bay Area Democrat Pete Stark (search), responded by voice mail within an hour. The message went as follows:
"Dan, this is Congressman Pete Stark, and I just got your fax. And you don't know what you're talking about. So if you care about enlisted people, you wouldn't have voted for that thing either. But probably somebody put you up to this, and I'm not sure who it was, but I doubt if you could spell half the words in the letter, and somebody wrote it for you. So I don't pay much attention to it. But I'll call you back later and let you tell me more about why you think you're such a great goddamn hero and why you think that [these] generals and the Defense Department, who forced these poor enlisted guys to do what they did, shouldn't be held to account. That's the issue. So if you want to stick it to a bunch of enlisted guys, have it your way. But if you want to get to the bottom of people who forced this awful program in Iraq, then you should understand more about it than you obviously do. Thanks."
The letter from Dow, a staff sergeant in the National Guard (search), was certainly provocative, but Dow said he was completely surprised by the response.
"I was shocked. My wife saw the expression on my face as I was listening to it and asked me who it was from, and I said you will never believe it, it's from Congressman Stark," he said. "To have that kind of an attack at me just for expressing my opinion on an issue was really a shock and so I'd rather be represented, no matter what political party they are, by someone who can represent us with dignity and pride and distinction rather than, you know, attacking members of their own locale."

I agree, he answered the fax straight away, he has a lot of other people to represent, the tone was a bit harsh but then we havn't read the fax.

Yeah, he 'straight away' made an ass of himself.
Another fine example of the Democrats 'supporting the troops'...but don't question their patriotism, oh no.
By the way, that congressman works for the people, not the other way around. A polesmoker indeed.

Isnt that odd, especially coming from someone who probably has never served his country a day in his life (I dont count politics, because well....this is a good example why).
Whatever happened to "Freedom of Speech" ? I thought that congress was supposed to be a voice for the people?

That is no sort of answer.
Stark: "I doubt if you could spell half the words in the letter, and somebody wrote it for you."
How the hell would he know how the man spells? And thanks asshole for accusing him of plagiary with NO EVIDENCE.
Stark: So I don't pay much attention to it.
Nice. Dismissiveness is so useful in an elected representative. Especially when he bases the dismissal on a personal doubt that led to an erroneous slander.
Stark: let you tell me more about why you think you're such a great goddamn hero
Another personal insult, this time with the added flair of profanity.
Stark: forced these poor enlisted guys to do what they did
Yeah, I bet this guy is real well versed on the status of the investigations. Considering that the investigations are still ongoing it’s nice to see a member of congress jumping to conclusions before the facts are in. Must be the sort of levelheaded logic that got him elected.
Stark: So if you want to stick it to a bunch of enlisted guys, have it your way.
You know what. I do. "I was just following orders" has never been a defense for these sorts of actions. Members of the U.S. military receive training on what is and is not acceptable treatment of POWs.
I could go on, but I won't.

That's hardly the straight answer I'd expect from a US congressman. I haven't seen the actual letter that he sent in the first place...I'll check the links.

oops, Mark SMan provided it.
Here ya go:
Dear Mr. Stark,
I am appalled that you voted against today's House Resolution 627, Roll Number 150. This measure would have shown publicly that you condemn the abuse of the prisoners in Iraq while simultaneously commend the service of the fine men and women who are serving in Iraq that bring honor to the uniform that they wear and to the Nation that they serve.
There are many Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coastguardmen from your 13th Congressional District who are serving with pride and distinction . These men and women bring great credit upon their hometowns and the State of California.
Your "NO" vote is an indication that you do not support the troops who selflessly serve our nation and in many cases have given the ultimate sacrifice so that you might have the freedom that you enjoy as a citizen of this great Nation. Further, your "NO" vote on this resolution is a disgrace to the people of this district who have elected you.
I urge you to stop your contemptuous display of bitter partisanship and your politicization of this War. Your actions are very divisive and destructive to the morale of our troops and the morale of our nation. I know that a majority of the population of the 13th Congressional District are very strong in their support of our soldiers and in their support of the War in iraq. Your "NO" vote today reflects that you are way out of touch with the people of this district.
Very Sincerely,
Daniel L. Dow

What's your point in posting this?
Same point as him receiving the award and mugging for the camera. He probably likes the political mileage he gets from that pic in some places. Well, I just gave him a chance to spread it around more.
Stark calls Dow up and drops the "goddam" on his phone. Nice to see Stark winning awards from aethists. Brings up multiple questions.
A: Mr. Stark are you so rude that use phrases like goddamn when you speak to friends and relatives.?
B: Which particular god, that you don't believe in, do you wish to damn your constituent Daniel L. Dow?
I'll restate my opinion, in case I didn't make it clear earlier, This Stark is a rude and illogical ****.

Damn, I hadn't read the NG guy's letter before - I'd assumed it was really nasty to receive such an outrageous response from an elected official.
But it appears to simply be a respectful, if strongly worded appeal to not paint all military members with the same brush. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.
And who is that freak with the Bozo the Clown haircut? What award is he giving (I probably don't want to know.....)
