Hi all,

I have recently gotten my hands on the BSSA - the full, monthly Soviet OOB for the duration of WW2.

All credit goes to AMVAS, who directed me to the material.

If you have any OOB related questions, don't hesitate.

Does it give any breakdowns about actual strength/manning levels? While on paper the Soviet and German forces in the east may have numbered 400+ divisions, are there any insights into how many were full divisions and not just badly depleted regiments or even battalions?

Average divisional strength for the Soviets in 1943 was around 6,000.

In 1944 it hovered around 4,000

By 1945 it was roughly 2,500-3,000

The reasoning for the above was that the Soviets didn't so much reinforce formations - they reconstituted them. And they generated many, many new ones. By 1945 (May) there were 517 rifle divisions, 17 independent rifle brigades, 26 cavalry divisions and 3 paratrooper divisions. As well as many Field Fortified Regions, Mechanized Corps, Tank Corps etc. etc. So, while the number of formations increased, as well as the firepower of those formations, the actual level of manpower remained fairly constant.

Lokos, does it have any information about air units operating at the front (VVS)?

Lokos,

First try: The 10th Rifle Red Banner Division at start of July 1944? Fighting in Äyräpää-Vuosalmi area in Finland. Especially the 62nd Rifle Regiment.

Thanks!

Red Banner?

Are you talking about the 10th Gv. Strelkovaya Diviziya? Part of 14. Army in the Karelian Front?

The OOB does have it, but it's not specific enough to go into regiments. Only divisions and other divisional level formations.

Ok! My source called the 10th division "Red Banner". The 14th Army was in the Murmansk area IIRC. Could it be the 23rd army? Thanks!

Ahh, yes, there is also a 10. Strelkovaya Diviziya in the 23. Army - part of the Leningrad Front.

It was in the 115. Rifle Corps.
